I would suggest the higher end (aka more expensive one) because as a general rule, the more expensive offering from the same brand is usually made better. This can't always be said if you compare different brands, but in your case you're comparing the same brand with different models.

I ended up purchasing the 1x not the 1x elite.

Good choice.  All you get additional with the Elite is Carbon Fiber which helps keep the weight down but doesn't necessarily add much to the protection.  Fiberglass and a full layer of Kevlar should be plenty for your level of play.

I'm using an NME 8 in geezer league hockey.  I wouldn't use it much above that.
