  1. I can't wait to play hockey in Israel. Two of my kids made aliya and one of these days I'll bring a spare set of gear to play in.
  2. well, in my team's case we looked for a new goalie because I retired and am skating out only. Started in net at 40 and now turning 50 and my knees are just too banged up to play. So it's not always the team's fault.
  3. man, there's a lot of whining. They scored. It's not fair. I'm not one of those old school goalies who say you have to stand up for everything, but yeah, they're scoring because goalies are using RVH for everything. Stay up. They won't score. RVH is being overused. And tell the D that if they see someone going behind the net and doing that crap, check him. They can't score if the puck isn't on the stick. And stay the hell off my lawn you damn kids.
  4. I think the safety issues are overblown. Goalies get hit in the face during games all the time even when these goals aren't an issue. These are also relatively easy to defend. Goalies: Stand the F up. Done. And the example you gave is an even easier one. Stick check him, either up or down. He can't maintain control of the puck. I think it's kind of cool, but I'd also be surprised if there are many more of these, simply because everyone is going to get wise to it.
  5. I'm not understanding the hate on this. Sure, it's showboating, but so is every between the leg dangle, toe drag, whatever. He's using his stick, so it's not like he's throwing, kicking, etc. And it's clearly not banned or the goals would have been waved off. There are two simple solutions: Goalies -- stay standing when he's on the ice and going around the net. Defensemen -- clean his clock. Good clean hit and he'll lose the puck. If you can catch him. Why take something fun to watch out of the game? (And that's coming from someone who hates hates hates the shootout at the end of tie games).
  6. I bought one of those. It never worked. The one I got that came with my Passau pads works much better, IMO
  7. meh. he wasn't the first to come up with using elastic based stuff in lieu of skate laces or leather. Brian's smart strapping predates him. All he did was say "hey, I can use "military grade shock cord" and upcharge a lot." And some of his stuff was just flat out stupid, IMO.
  8. have you worn the combo yet? I shouldn't talk, I just ordered a Passau set.
  9. how do these slide compared to the G3 or G4? Same question with regard to rebounds? I'm in the market for new pads but can't decide between the G4 or the GT2. I'm more of a hybrid than a strict butterfly, but I do slide and I love the big rebounds off my G3s. I should note that I have a very narrow bfly (really a Jiggy fly) and while I love the G3s, I can't quite close the 5 hole on them. Not sure if the GT2 would help.
  10. Height is irrelevant. I'm 5'11". I'm in a 34+1.5. I was playing with a guy who is 6'2". Also in a 34 inch pad. Why? His height is all torso. short legs.
  11. Long sleeve, snug with wrist bands. I bought a pair of batting gloves, will give it a try.
  12. Looking for a recommendation for something to wear under my gloves. As the game goes on I sweat so much that my hands in my gloves are less grippy. I use wrist bands, but I'm looking for batting gloves or other suggestions. Thanks!
  13. I had one from SkinFx. It was fine. Not great. The seams were noticeable and there was some bubbling. I think that I was disappointed because for $300 I was expecting closer to a paint job (based on all the Facebook pics, they look flawless, but clearly aren't). Heck, my first paint job was only $450. I think it's a good alternative if you can't afford a paint job, but don't think it's the same. Didn't have any peeling with it.
  14. They seem to be. But you'd have to be a full on raging idiot to buy anything from them. I think it's just tone deaf of Bauer. Fine, license the tech (not that it's not pretty obvious) but why brand it as Monster?
  15. Ok, have to update now that I have a few skates in. The Roughneck velcro is definitely lacking. The EPF design is definitely superior there.
  16. Correct. I've got no beef with D30. I've had D30 kneepads that were fine, but nothing special (although they hurt when dropping into the butterfly for obvious reasons). Just because something is good in one context doesn't mean it necessarily is in another.
  17. This. (although gravity is -9.8 meters per second squared. One of the few things I remember from physics. ;)) It's a thin layer of D30 and it's not flush. I could see using it with something else, but I guess one way of looking at is like a kevlar vest. A kevlar vest will stop most bullets. But it's thin and it's right on your body, so you may still break a rib and certainly will get bruised if shot. Not comparing bullets to pucks (I guess I am), but a thin layer right against your neck and you might still face some damage. The thicker gel types will spread the impact more. I think the Aegis is a good concept, but I'd layer it on top of a gel based one and I'd think it would be more protective that way.
  18. So, here's a comparison having owned all four neckguards mentioned in the title, including two iterations of the Maltese. The EcoProFoam (EPF), Roughneck, and Maltese are all variations of a theme. The Roughneck and Maltese both have the "mullet' or skirt in the back. The EPF does not. I can't tell you whether the Maltese foam is the same as in the EPF and Roughneck, but it's certainly similar. They all weigh roughly the same. I've heard the Maltese is heavier but I sold mine so I can't compare. But any difference in weight is negligible. In terms of comfort, those three are all pretty much the same with one minor variation, but it's a moderately significant one. The EPF uses a wider velcro closure and covers it with material. The Roughneck is a thinner piece and doesn't cover it. I don't remember the Maltese. The roughneck is slightly less comfortable because of the exposed strap and because it's thinner. It's a slight disadvantage. In terms of material covering the guards, both the EPF and Roughneck use spandex or something like it. It's a tiny complaint, but both already show signs of fading where the material pulls, such as at the corner. Maybe not fading per se, but it's pulled so tight that it shows lighter than it is. Not a huge issue, but my Maltese didn't do that. I'm going to throw the Aegis in for a quicky review. It's the most comfortable of the bunch. It's lightweight and doesn't retain heat like the others. However, I'll only wear it at low level skates because I'm not that confident in its ability to deaden impacts like the gel-based ones. I think that D30 is an interesting concept, I'm not sure I want to risk my neck with it. What would be interesting would be a thinner gel piece covered with D30. If someone came out with that I'd buy it in a heartbeat. (Who am I kidding, I'm a goalie, tell me it will change my game and I'd buy anything in a heartbeat). Long story short, I'll probably keep both the EPF and Roughneck but the EPF gets a slight nod for comfort. Service from both companies was top notch.
  19. And I don't mind that they copied it. That's for the other manufacturer to deal with. it was the incessant carping about how the other manufacturers sucked and "we're better because we're made in Canada" crap that bothered me.
  20. Just saw that as well. talk about clones. I thought their gear was fine, but I hated their constant carping about off-shore gear. "Buy ours, it's made in Canada" all the while ripping off other companies' designs (not just graphics, but actual pad designs).
