Need help choosing a chest protector. Coming from Bauer 2x Pro

Recommended Posts

Hey there, I need help choosing a chest protector. Im looking to get one off sidelineswap to save a little money, but still getting a high end one.

About me: 6'2, 170lbs, generally facing AAA - Jr. A level shooters.

Im coming from wearing a Sr Medium Bauer 2x Pro. I liked the mobility and lightweight of the 2x Pro, but I've been feeling the puck more than id like in the arms and stomach. Now what I didn't like: for some reason the 2x Pro has a hard plastic heart guard, this has ALWAYS given me terrible rebounds since day one of getting it (2020) and I really hated this so much that going forward its important to me the rebounds off the chest are very dead. Additionally, I think I'd like to get a size up in the future because I don't find the coverage of this chest to be very impressive on me.

I tried the Bauer Hyperlite 2 and Shadow (both Sr. Large) on in stores. Both felt nearly identical on the body, both very mobile and comfortable all over. Coverage looked pretty good in the mirror too.

The chests I'm considering are these, looking for feedback on these/comparisons across these to help me make a choice:

1. MarkHockey onepro chest

I've heard limited but great things about this. Anybody have any experience with a similar model? I found one on sidelineswap that should be my size and was used in the KHL, though im not sure for how long. I was wondering if the coverage on this would be different/better than an NHL return because of NHL regulations, im not sure if KHL regulations are the same? This is my front runner right now though, just looking for second opinions as I've never seen these in person. https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/goalie/goalie-chest-arm-protectors/8522590-used-goalie-chest-protector

2. CCM AB18 Pro

I've heard both good and bad things about this chest, but with how popular it is, it can't be that bad of a choice, right? Im wondering how the coverage/mobility of this compares to the others I've listed, being pro stock. https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/goalie/goalie-chest-arm-protectors/8581233-ccm-pro-stock-ab-pro-goalie-chest-protector-large

3. Bauer Hyperlite 2

Trying this model on in person, can confirm it fits comfortably and from looking briefly in a mirror, coverage seems good. My question is how do these Bauers usually hold up? I've heard they tend to break down pretty easy, especially in the arms. Also, how are the rebounds off the outwardly-extended heart guard? That feature seems unique, but if it's like my 2x Pro with the brutal rebounds, I'd avoid it like the plague. https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/goalie/goalie-chest-arm-protectors/8664576-bauer-vapor-hyperlite-2-chest-arm-protector-sr-large

4. Bauer Pro Series

Im wondering if this would give me the benefits of the retail Bauers, comfort and mobility, while being beefed up to avoid breaking down to fast. Like with the CCM AB18, im curious about the coverage on this one compared to, for example, the MarkHockey. (Could only find XL on sidelineswap) https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/goalie/goalie-chest-arm-protectors/8432876-bauer-nhl-spec-chesty-xl

Those are my main options, but I also saw this:

https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/goalie/goalie-chest-arm-protectors/8194970-used-large-passau-goalie-chest-protector-pro-pack - I know nothing about this, coverage, comfort, mobility, or rebounds, but I've heard Passau is a notable chest brand. Any thoughts?

Thanks for all your guys help!

I have a Passau Pro-Pack now... it's a tank. Fantastic protection... but I have found on rare occasions that all that protection comes at the cost of mobility. Even after a number of years with it and being fully broken in... it's bulky. Of those you've listed I'd be inclined to pick up the CCM AB18 Pro.

I too am in a Passau Pro-Pack and have been for many years now despite trying a Mark Hockey One Pro, and the new Bauer Series as well as a Warrior RX3 Pro+. The Passau is going to be heavier and bulkier like @BadAngle41 has stated BUT IMO is built the best of the rest I've tried. I feel like the Passau is always bigger looking and tankier, but because of that you sacrifice some mobility and weight. It's much heavier than the other options you have there.

I always end up back at my old Passau because it's still a tank and is just too comfy for me now. If I were to pick an option from your list that isn't the Passau it would be the Mark One. I really liked mine, I only sold it because it was a tad big for me. I'm normally in a Med, and my Mark One was a large so I moved it but it felt really nice. Reminiscent of my Passau honestly.

I want to try a AB Pro but I feel like those are meant to be worn low on the neck and I'm not a fan of that. I usually like mine to sit higher up. Definitely want to make sure you are wearing extra neck protection if you chose that CCM.

I've tried the AB18 and it's solid, just make sure about the sizing. I use a pro return Bauer Pro Series and the mobility is awesome, good coverage without mask interference. If your league doesn't impose gear restrictions, you're open to anything, otherwise, stick with the Pro CCM.

Thank you guys! Ended up getting the Mark One (currently being shipped). I play in a pretty hot arena, if the Mark One is like the Passau, I think I'll be happy.

if you mean Mark Hockey was originally built as an analogy for Brown. super protected unit
