johncho
I do like my Bauer Pro Knee guards, but I have to wear them with knee pads underneath which is a bit bulky. I happened across a pretty good deal on brand new CCM Pros on FB marketplace that could not be returned. The inside feels very plush and fit my knobbly knee cap well. The straps work well, it fits much higher than the Bauers (Bauers seem to provide more protection lower, and CCMs higher). Of course last night, first time out with it 15min in I get into a VH and take an absolute bomb off the knee. I definitely felt it when it happened and I still feel it this morning (no bruise yet but tender). I will try them again with some knee pads to see if they are bulkier than the Bauers in that manner. Either that or I will relegate them for lower games.

coopaloop1234
Now think about how that would feel without knee pads. I can't say how others feel, but I think of knee protection a supplementary protection item instead of a primary item. Leg pads are designed to protect your knees and in most scenarios you'll never get hit there, but, you do want something there to keep you walking in case of pucks getting by. Some minor tenderness after taking a bomb to the knee cap is, in my books, the ideal result of the protection/mobility exchange that comes with goalie gear. Unless you're a Giggy-Fly enthusiast, then you probably want that area to be super protective.
Novasteel31
Agreed, I can probably count on one hand how many times I have actually been hit in the knee. I also feel that there needs to be a good medium between mobility and protection. I bought those CCM's to give them a whirl but after about 10 skates went back to my Bauer's as I felt like I couldn't even skate how bulky the CCM's were.
creasecollector
Glad it wasn't worse. Nice to know the knee pads did the job. Although they're bulky, it is why I like my Koho 590 pro swiss knee pads. They are tanks.
tgfoo
I have the older version of these (the KP Pros) and I've never felt anything through them. Granted, I can't remember the last time I took a bomb directly to the knee. But if all you have is a little tenderness, no damage or bruise, I'd consider that a win... as long as taking bombs to the knee isn't a frequent occurrence for you. John, the fact that you got nailed right at the knee cup makes me wonder if your wearing them too high on your thighs (garter belt set-up). The lower anchor works just like my Warriors and the thigh guard should be near flush to your knee block. Did you lean back somehow on the shot? IpaddyTECH
Sorry about the knee bomb! I have a weird method I've developed that might be an option. I have Warrior pro knee pads, but I cut off the bottom parts that its supposed to go on your knee cap (on the knee block when down), and instead I wear the G-from x3 knee pads underneath just the two thigh/knee protector shells. I did this mostly because that little knee flap with the strap just wasn't comfortable and didn't land well. I just tried on the Bauer pro's and CCMs and theirs were no better, I don't think it's a brand issue as it is a design one. I even sometimes had red marks on my skin and pain from how the bad that knee flap would bunch up and rub against my knee even through compression pants and socks. I figured this after one time forgetting my knee pads and having to go "commando" so to speak. As scary as that was, it felt real nice haha. And it made me realize just how much the lower flap and strap of my knee pads wasn't helping. The g-forms have dense enough foam to protect but form perfectly around your knee cap and move with it. So now all I have left are the two heavy protective shells that go over the thigh and front of the knee, with the g-forms underneath. I have them up with suspenders and the lower thigh guard nearly rests on my knee block but without getting in the way. I haven't been tagged on just the g-forms yet, and I'm not looking forward to that day, but like others have said, how much are you really going to bulk up the knee protection and screw with pad rotation just for those few times in a lifetime of playing that would you have gotten hit just beneath a thigh guard. It works for me, but your mileage may vary.
IpaddyTECH
The only thing I haven't tried is the pad integrated knee pads like Brian's where they are laced into the pad just above the knee. Anyone have any experience with this?

I was in VH and it was the H leg that got hit Edit: during the transition from VH on my glove side to standing up, the shooter caught a pass as I was moving my right foot back to get up opening up the knee area. Should it have happened? No. Am I good enough to quickly recover and react before he shot? Also no. Edited October 7 by johncho
