Homemade neck guard

After reading some of the post about neck guards I decided to try making one today. I have an Ecopro Foam one but there’s a few things about it that bother me. I find that the square edge along the top of the collar bothers my neck and interferes a bit with my mask so I wanted to try a collar that’s more beveled along the top. I also wanted to make it so that the foam of the collar and bib are more like one piece rather than 2 separate pieces so there’s more protection where the collar and bib meet. The collar is slightly lower and the cutout is wider than the one on the Ecopro.

Used  3 layers of 1/8” Poron foam laminated together , an old under armour shirt and some ballistic nylon.  Made the Velcro tab removable.

Feels comfortable and not too heavy - 180 g.

Wont be able to try it for a couple weeks as I have a slight mcl tear.

Just used some materials that I had laying around. The Poron foam was samples that was sent to my work.

It takes about a square foot of 3/8” foam, so using something like SHOCKtec Air2Gel would be about $20 and the Lycra would be less than $10. Small strip of ballistic nylon, Velcro and elastic webbing around $5.

Haven’t checked recently. We got samples from them, at my work, when they first came out. I will look into it this week.

Cool, just curious if anyone could do this or if it's like D30 and they are very limited who they sell to.

Black seems readily available, but I believe this different

The bevel around the top of the collar works well.

I’m going to make another this weekend but this time I’m going to take a template of the front of my neck to use for the cutout in the bib. I finding that most neck protectors have either a circular curve or a flat with curves on the front bib part where it meets the collar on your neck. My neck is more of a V shaped curve when viewed from the front so as a result the collar presses against the front of my neck more than I want.

I will take more pictures this time as I make it.

Poron is very limited to who they sell to. Bauer has the market cornered with them for use in hockey. Even for free samples you have to jump through hoops to get them as a sales rep contacts you and wants to know why you want free samples. I had a convince them about 3 years ago it was for me and personal use as soon as a mentioned hockey. Bauer prevents them from selling to anyone in the hockey world.

D30 is the same. I have about 4 sheets I was able to score and it's like gold to me. I am afraid to cut it up and do mods because I am worried I will come up with a better use for it at a later date and then I won't have it available.

I have a feeling there's plenty of board members that would love to take the first one for a ride!

  • 2 weeks later...

Made the black version with the neck cutout in the bib matching the shape of my neck. Much more comfortable. Not having pressure on the front of your neck allows you to wear it tighter without feeling like it’s choking you , much the same as a good fitting dress shirt feels.

Poron won’t sell to me directly but they may if I go through the kiteboarding company that I design products for. Will know in the new year.

@Ross I really like the removable velcro tab. One feature I think is nice on the Roughneck that I don't have on my Maltese is the dip in the back. The velcro rubs against the back of my neck on occasion and I'd think the rear dip would alleviate that. I didn't see any on the pic you posted of the laminated Poron... but did you make any relief cuts to allow for more flex bib?

The Poron in the bib part has holes punched in it which does make it flex more but it doesn’t have relief cuts. Something to try on the next one.

I used 1” elastic webbing and Velcro so in effect it dips 1/2”in the back plus the Velcro is positioned such that when adjusted for my neck there is none exposed.

You can buy D3O online for motorcycle suit inserts - they're cheap, especially the hip and back pieces. It's a bit of work but you can just trim them down with a sharp exacto blade and planer to get the size/thickness you need.

You can buy poron as well online, but in sheets of general duty use stuff. The Bauer stuff isn't even that great. It's really soft stuff.

OR

Contact Resilient Mask foam specialist on FB - he can sell you the poron in sheets as well.
