Jersey alteration - recommendations

I have a Sweden WCH jersey that's a bit too small to fit over my chesty. It's a 3XL player jersey and I'd like to get it altered to fit as a GC (or close).

Can anyone offer tips/recommendations on how to get this done? I'm thinking the sides and sleeves can be opened to add an additional panel and it should work fine. Does this sound right?

Should I plan on purchasing another matching jersey so the material is the same? If that's the case, I might just scrap it as I could probably find a closer match in goalie cut for less $$ than this project would entail.

Also, any idea who could do this for me? A few local alteration shops I've looked into don't really want to take it on.

Thanks!

That surprises me that nobody would take that on. My local seamstress does those for me at $20 a pop. She loves it.

Yes- they just pop it open and add the additional material in sleeves and body. You can find material at JoAnn that will work fine.

I am still gobsmacked that nobody would take this on...

I too was able to find material at JoAnn Fabrics to do this.  My mom is a retired Home Econ teacher who did two jerseys for me and told me that I'd better buy them bigger from now on.  Apparently getting everything lined up straight was quite a bit of work, even with all the toys she had at her disposal (she was still working at the time).  I even took care of ripping all the seems for her, and that was a ton of work too.  I'd pay $20 and supply the material cheerfully if I had to ever do this again (instead I just take Mom's advice and buy my jerseys in XXXFat).

So many times, it would be a sweater that I REALLY REALLY wanted, but only could get it in 3X or 4X, but the sleeves were *just* a bit tight. Of course modern elbow floaters (which do not EVER need to be shrunk IMO) will take a nice-fitting sweater and KILL the fit, or the numbers will look weird. I have found 3/4 times on a 4X Reebok that the body was perfect, but the sleeves sucked, both being too long and too narrow. And the 4X Adidas/whatever the brand name has become an endangered species. This is what makes me want to go Chinese with a fake sweater that fits, if that truly exists! Sometimes I am lucky and can find a Kobe or AK that looks pretty good and will find a loose crest (wait ‘til I show you what I have cooked up!).

Of course I love my local seamstress, as she cooked up my Canucks Flying V pant shell. She said that took her a LOT of work, but she was happy with the result (as I am).

I recently had a friend do this to one of my league jerseys that was "goalie cut" but the arms were way too tight. She does all of her own costuming for Renaissance Faire(s) and the like, so she already owns all of the equipment to do the work. What she did was open the seam between the two sides of the jersey along the side, and add in a 2" strip of like-colored jersey material that runs all the way from the wrists to the armpit at the bottom of the arms, and from the armpit down to the waist. That fixed it up perfectly.

Can you show us some of your sweaters? Have you had just sublimated or have they done twill for you? I am trying to come up with options for a 3-on-3 tournament a buddy and I are putting together and Tron is in the lead for now.

I have a really cool one having its crest and numbers put on as we speak. It will rival my Fleury Pens, Bryz Ducks and Hanlon Flying V. I am pretty chuffed with what will be coming from my favourite stitcher.

@bunnyman666 I will try to upload pics when I get home but you have total control of what you want. You send them a pic of the logo and they will do it. Pick a font, colours whatever you want.  They can copy anything. Obviously also it's a print on. It will take some time to get it perfect going back and forth with emails but they will do it. Just be very specific and it will be fine. They will work on the design and give you samples, when it's perfect you will give them the go ahead.

Does anyone know how goalies have their sleeves up at their floaters? I like how it keeps the Jersey out of the way of my hands but my jerseys don’t roll up above my floaters. Anyone know if goalies really just have shorter sleeves?

NHL jerseys are special nicely tailored as per NHL specifications on removing extra material in the arm pit area. Most jerseys i got are just modified XXXL player jerseys that make me look like a flying squirrel, some have a wider body to accommodate shoulder floaters and shorter straight cut arms to compensate for the width, then Just one that is eventually a scaled up player jersey the arms on this one are too tight and long. Just depends on the manufacturer and how they tailor the jerseys.

I don't have a Adidas jersey, but the RBK ones are a stretchy material so i assume that they just stretch them over the floaters
