What's your day job?

  1. 1. With the detailed and exacting nature of many of our topics... I'm curious... what's your day job? Comment on how/if you think there is a connection between what drew you to your day job and what drew you to play between the pipes.

I swear... I have little to nothing to do with that. Or the Phoenix pay system.

That's exactly what someone involved with it would say! I've only been mildly affected by it.

Substitute at that, right?

I work in creative branding (primarily in healthcare, so the 'creative' part is up for debate :eyeroll:). I'm in charge of all my company's branding initiatives, and I also serve as our lead copywriter (which may explain my nerdy habit of going back to edit my posts here). I write copy for ads, our webpage, product descriptions, videos, podcasts, blogs, etc. I also work with our Design department a lot, and I have a background in art and design.

Relevant to playing goalie? Not so much... there's probably some connection to my fascination with goalie brands and how they're packaged (name, design, logos, etc.) but it's pretty flimsy.

Aviation Communications.  More specifically a radio operator for New York Radio.  We are contracted by the FAA to communicate with all aircraft in the Atlantic ocean while not in radar range for the controllers.

Nothing whatsoever to do with hockey.

What did you do in the Marines? I was USAF SATCOM, now working with cellular networks.

...oh damn, I was gonna say my day job was a porn star, but then you started talking about radios and I got all serious

I was in comm as well, specifically radio.  VHF, HF, and Satcom.  I never thought I would ever find a job that had anything to do with what I knew coming out of the Marine Corps.

You’re not a porn star?

And all of this time, I was led to believe that’s what you were...

I worked with mobile SATCOM (Combat Comm), mainly microwave LoS, Tropo Scatter and SAT. This was one of my former units (5th Mob in Robins AFB): https://edition.cnn.com/videos/us/2012/06/05/air-force-mob.cnn

C'mon, there's plenty of jobs out there for radio guys. I found a job within a month of leaving the Force in 1999 and have not been unemployed a day since.

Protein deconstruction specialist at your locaL coop.  I cut meat.  Can't remember a time I didn't skate right from early on.  Dropped hockey playing defence in pee wee took up reffing.  Got back into rec couple years back team needed a goalie to continue so I volunteered.  Loving it ever since!

Other: illustration and design. Shameless self promotion: http://davemurrayillustration.com/

I played around 4 games as a defenseman before switching to goal as a 6 year old. My dad was a goalie, so that was that. The artistic aspect of the position is certainly a bonus.

Pretty nice stuff! Are you an Ayn Rand fan? For some reason some of your designs made me think of Atlas Shrugged, go figure.

Thanks, man!

I'm not an Ayn Rand fan, but I know the cover you're referencing. That Art Deco style is definitely an influence in my work.

I'm a huge Ayn Rand fan (Anthem is my favourite book of all time) and I agree - that art style is fantastic. Love your work. You going to get into mask painting at any point? :)

Financial Examiner - Correlation: Opportunity

When I chose my career path it was based on the opportunity to enter a profession always in demand, kind of the same when I started playing goalie.  There always seemed to be a demand for goalies and I took that as endless opportunities to play.
