TheGoalNet
Calling all Maltese mask gel users! I currently have a CCM Mask custom padded by Protechsport and have been testing the spring release of NME VTX. I have been blown away with how well the VTX absorbs shots. The Protechsport mask sticks to my head like glue and makes the helmet not at all noticeable. The VTX is comfortable, but the feel is different than the Protechsport. I am thinking about re-padding my CCM with the Maltese to Benchmark them against each other. How does that Maltese gel handle sweat? Does it get sticky or tacky with contact to sweat? TheGoalNet
Also, any pics of gel foam that is years old would be great too!
Doobiesnax
I didn't find that it got sticky or tacky at all. I only wore my old VV with the maltese for a few months though so I can't really comment on how it wears over time. I did find that, for me, the maltese wasn't as comfortable to wear as the neoprene in my Coveted as the gel is substantially more rigid.
IPv6Freely
Sweat is no issue with Maltese. I love the padding in the NME series and the VTX is even better. The little low-density gel pads on all the pressure points make such a huge difference.

I love how the Protechsport padding forms a tiny suction once I sweat. Anyone else with Protechsport padding find that?

The black I've come realize the VTX makes me feel way more safe, but I miss the feel of the Protechsport padding. I am curious if Maltese is a nice middle ground of if I will just commit to the VTX full time.

Anyone else with Protechsport padding find that? Its likely not the padding but the fact that its much more closely fitted to your head that causes that suction feeling. There's less air gaps, so your literally just sticking to the foam through compression and moisture.
Kayen
I find my maltese to be pretty firm, and doesn't stick at all compared to whatever foam I was using before (not 100% what it was - was provided to me by a refurber, and even when I asked him he can't remember what it was he used in my mask). Will have my protechsport in soon, can report back with a side by side comparison if it is still needed when it arrives.

I use it as a supplement to the old foam now, and i've taken some bombs off the mask with no worse for wear (3 point blank slapshots off the mask last game)(also not sure how much "worse" this mask can get at this point). Even though I (desperately) need to replace this mask (appropriately nicknamed the suicide bucket by my teammates). I got the strips and originally outfitted it into an Itech 961 (which i've sold), but moved a few pieces over into the 960. I'll add pictures when I get home tonight. Chenner29
Here's the inside of mine. I would say the gel runs more on the medium side as far as firmness goes. The biggest difference is that it will stay this way throughout the life of the padding. Other types of padding have a tendency to absorb sweat and harden. Think of your crusty, trusty old gloves from a few seasons back. We offer two thicknesses, 1/4" and 3/8". The fit can be adjusted with the black 1/8" shims that are included in the kit. Protechsport padding does not get crusty, but I know what your referencing with the classic cream How old is the gel pictured here?

sebastiancp1
I swear by my Maltese neck guards, but I could never get used to the feel of the gel kit in my mask. In my experience, I felt like there were "gaps" in the padding given that it's only small strips of padding. It was a very strange feeling for me to not have contact in all places and I ultimately could not get used to it. The backplate was especially uncomfortable for me. I was to stress that this is nothing against Maltese, just my personal preference. If Maltese ever made full sheets available, similar to what's in the Otny masks, I would buy immediately and add to my 961.

I didn't like the feeling of gaps and I could feel the edges of the strips. Also agreed on the backplate. Completely agree with your last statement, too. If they sold sheets (or kits made for my mask) I would definitely try it.
cwarnar
Inside of my soon to be retired Stacey. I don't mind the gapping or sparse padding design of the Maltese kit. I've had zero issues with it since the install 2+ years ago
wishEMT
Not to hijack, but has anyone used the kemmler shocktec air gel in a mask? What is the consensus on it? I know they used to supply Maltese so I’m a bit curious.

No, but the black padding that Michel uses does start to fall apart after a while.
TitanG
So with the rumours (and direct evidence) that Maltese is having cashflow issues, they just posted on their Facebook page that they will now be selling full sheets:
