There are a bunch of videos about the Ellipse player profiles as well. I don't get the sense that they are meant specifically for stability, but what I find a bit odd is for player skates they have multiple Ellipse profiles based on the holder & blade size, but they don't for goalies.

  2. I'm kind of surprised, the surgeon didn't rush to convince me I need surgery.

Essentially he asked "How much are your hips keeping you from doing what you want to do?"  He did also mention that I have the start of arthritis blooming in my left hip, but that it isn't that bad yet.  If it were to get markedly worse, there's a chance I wouldn't be a candidate for arthroscopy any longer.  The cam deformity is going to accelerate that wear, so in that sense it's likely that having surgery would slow or stop any progression of arthritis.

When I think about it that way I start to lean toward wanting to move forward, especially since recovery isn't going to get any easier as I get older.  🍿, I guess.

  3. Consult with the hip surgeon tomorrow afternoon.  I guess I'm nervous about it, probably because I'm afraid he'll recommend surgery.

On one hand, I don't really feel like I need surgery to do most things I want to do, but I am worried I'm doing more damage by not having arthroscopic procedures done on both hips now, potentially increasing the chances I need a full replacement at a younger age.  My last game was in May of last year and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a mental struggle even more than a year on from that to leave the game behind.

Negative, see my other reply but basically asked Vaughn to make an xp70 with as retro look as possible, as I really just wanted the break angle as I’m a 580 user.

I'm not saying you didn't order the XP70, just that it looks like they messed up.  The entire shape of the glove looks off from the XP model.  I guess maybe they could have started with the V10 build and then built the break to be more like 70*? It doesn't really look like it in this case, but that's more or less what they did with the XP70 versus the original 60* version.

Is the set in your hands yet or still on its way from the dealer?

You'd probably also like the stock Vaughn V10 break. I found it very similar to the GNetikV, which the Iconik should be like as well. The Brian's break angle is "35 degrees," but Brian's does their angle backwards, and the Vaughn V10 (not XP) is somewhere around a 50-to-55 degree. Both also feel similar to a 590, but with a little something tweak.

Hmm.  I'm not so sure about the bolded.  The regular V10 (and my old V9 two piece) felt nothing like a 590 to me.  The 590 is full hand, the regular V9 and V10 gloves are very pinchy, fingertip to thumb closure to my hand.  Both feel very similar to the Ultrasonic/Mach.

The standard 60* V9 XP is the 590 clone.

Things I know about the new model and some things Vaughn has said:

    • Quickslide now has "glass" incorporated
      • My speculation is that it has some sort of polycarbonate interwoven
      • Maybe taken inspiration from the Warrior slide plate by integrating the material
    • The strapping will be like the Velocity V10 (which is Vaughn's version of the FRS style strapping, but modular/changeable)
    • Boot will be flatter than the SLR3
    • "The SLR4 catch glove has been completely redone. Now featuring 60 and 70 degree break options"
      • I wonder what will differentiate this from the V10 glove(s), I'm a huge fan of the V10 60deg, have not gotten to try the 70deg
    • Core has been redesigned to make rebounds harder and the pad stiffer

Summary: The SLR4 is made to be more in line with other brands' versions of "the stiff pad that gives hard rebounds." I'd say it's likely to be very comparable to the 20.2/HZRDUS. Should shape up to be a pretty good release.

Other fun thing is Kemper is in CCM skates in the video, I think that's new/overlooked "siting" information, albeit small.

The seal on this looks still with Ned looks great, one of the others (I think the gal) shows some of that trademark propensity for slight over-rotation I've noticed with the SLR for its last few lines, probably a bit loose on the pad.

    image.thumb.png.db03fabe228f1e3c2662df6b8efad77d.png

    Sounds promising.

On the gloves, the V10 glove is actually not a 60*. It's labeled as a 60* on the site, but it is a revision of the 2-piece V9 glove, which is more like 50*.  The pocket is farther out than the 60* XP (590 clone) glove.  Ev commented on a V10 review video on YouTube that it isn't a 60* but of course they haven't fixed the site. So Vaughn.

My guess is the XP 60* and XP 70* gloves will be the default for the SLR line and the current SLR glove is going away. The old V9 2-piece and SLR gloves were so similar I think it makes sense. The SLR had a different wrist strap and a steeper thumb, but the break I believe was the same.

    How old are you?

I would forget Bauer. This kind of background I would stay with domestic Brian's or order a True custom set. If you don't order a custom set maybe True 7x3 could be the best option or Vapor mid-level set if you want more modern option.

I must like wasting time, because I stopped by the local Perani's to mess with some gear last week.

The 7X3 is a STIFF pad.  For someone used to older pads, I don't think the 7X3 is going to be an easy transition.  They had V10 Pro (not carbon), 7X3, and X5 Pro on the shelf, and the 7X3 was a total brick compared to the other two.  The X5 Pro had some vertical flex but really not much torsionally.  The V10 Pro had some of both, but it wasn't a wet noodle.  It also still uses the old version of the RRC/professor strap instead of the new QMS imitation, which may or may not be a benefit, but if you like that feeling of a pad anchored high on the calf you can still get it in that pad.

The only reservation I'd have in recommending the V10 Pro is Quickslide.  Might just be because my hips were already shit, but I had a hard time adjusting to Quickslide.  I was oversliding all the time at first, though I did adjust to that.  What I never adjusted to was the feeling of instability while on my knees.  It took so much more tension in the small muscles around the hip to stay tall and stable in the butterfly.

Gun to head I'd probably recommend set of used GNetik IVs if you can find a clean pair.  More modern, not totally lacking in structure, but also a pad that will very much move with you.

Agreed.   Might be the worst Velocity graphic ever.  It was a very poor choice to make the graphic a real thing, which is just a giant (crooked) X.

@AdamL that Buffalo CCM set is gorgeous though.   Very drooly.

Yeah it's not great. I've seen a couple sets that look...okay...but nothing I've really gravitated to.

For some reason I really dig the all red CCM setup with blue logos.

Also, as for NHL goalies wearing Velocity, forgot about Cal Peterson.

@AdamL, dude I am so sorry about your hip. I didnt have a choice. I tried to negotiate with Dr a way out of the surgery and he said sure I could hobble around with the brace for a year or so and then he'd have to reconstruct my thigh. Hobbling isnt an option for my work and thigh reconstruction is extreme so quad reattachment and meniscus surgery was the only realistic option.

Thanks.  Best of luck with the rehab!

I really do think the V10s are being overlooked, only thing really going against them is the thigh is a still a bit thicker, but the rest of the pad is outstanding.

They addressed the knee stack thankfully, and the thigh rise looks appropriate for higher level use now.  If they brought the weight down it may be able to compete with the PX3, but I'd still have a hard time choosing the V10 over a PX3 if I was ever going to place a custom order again.

That would mean the V10's are already PVE's since the only point of the PVE was a Velocity pad with Ventus strapping.

The strapping does look basically identical.  Same copycat version of the Quick Motion system from Lefevre.

It was very disheartening for me that all the things I did to my V9 set to make it stiffer with more stability and more pop all made the whole set unbearably heavy.  This was the final deal breaker for me and Vaughn.

I would get so tired in that set compared to my current Bauer set.

You're in Bauer now? Did a quick search through your posts but didn't see anything, did you post any details or thoughts on the set?

That's a whole lot of "at best backups".

I guess that must've changed come the C/A reduction. I know at one point they had a stranglehold.

100%.  It's crazy seeing pictures from 10-15 years ago, it feels like 50% of the NHL was wearing Velocity pads, now it's essentially no one.  I can sort of understand why, my V9 set seemed well made but I didn't get along with any of it.

Isn't Vaughn still #1 when it comes to C/A and Pants usage in the NHL? At least they're still carving out a section on the pro side since their Velocity line has practically disappeared from the show.

Aside from Quick's V2's, who else is even using the Velocity line? Feels like all Vaughn users are SLR guys.

There are several, but nobody prominent.  Mrazek, Stalock, Stauber, Driedger, I'm sure there are others.
