  1. Hello @degoalie: Being in net involves a whole different set of movements and torques on the joints than playing out. Best guess, assuming you're medically uninjured, is your body is getting acclimated to the new movements. Pretty courageous of you to switch into net at 52. Might want to see the Dr to rule out a medical issue. Hopefully, you're uninjured but best to get it confirmed. If so, you might consider stretching much more often. Good luck!
  2. Absolutely tragic. He was indestructible during his playing days on a team that stunk most years. Pancreatic killed him. Even though he got old, his passion to play never left. Orval Tessier, the coach the last 2 years of TE's career, wanted to phase him out during his last season and play Bannerman. TE said screw it...called Lou Nanne, the boss of the Minnesota North Stars at the time, who had a spot laid out for him. Dollar Bill Wirtz got involved and said no. I dont think TE ever filed retirement papers. LOL.
  3. Very cool topic! Chicago: Tony, not Phil, Esposito....sorry @RichMan Age alert: Canucks: King Richard Brodeur Flyers: Bernie Parent Bruins: Gerry Cheevers Kings: Rogie Vachon/our @Wonder35 Where do we put Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, and Jacques Plante? Lots of great goalies mentioned in this thread; too many to count.
  4. The goaler had to respond to the spears. Ref did nothing and the Dman did nothing. If not, the skater/glass jaw would do it again next time.
  5. Just when I couldnt feel any worse about myself.....61 and degrading quickly.
  6. I was aware of him when he broke in but never really a fan. While he's been here, he's had groin issues until this season. This year, he's been their best player night in and night out. The reason why I mentioned him last night during the "Canes' game was that Carolina put a beating on him...I think all of us who have been on poor teams could identify with him esp last night. He didnt blow any fuses; he just tried really hard and went about his business.
  7. He's been great this season on an inexperienced team. 'Canes are putting a beating on him and he's making impossible stops. 4-0 Canes but the score should be 10-0. His demeanor has been professional and his technique is precise and quick this season. Very impressive.
  8. @mik et al: thanks fellas. means a lot.
  9. Saw the surgeon yesterday. Consistent with his intergalatic ego, he's pleased with his work and my leg. SOB put me through it yesterday. Had me doing one legged skips in the hallway of his office. Not so great on the left leg. The loss of strength in the quad and glut is the big problem together with descent of stairs and swelling at the end of the work day. So added more exercises and a stretch to the ones I already do to free up the glut and iliotibial band at the hip and knee. Bottom line: for ordinary people, doing well and ahead of the curve. If you saw me on the street, you wouldnt know I had my quad reattached. For what we do, I am looking at the fall. I just dont have any spring yet in the leg. I am trying hard.
  10. Welcome to the union! I think it will involve trial and error until you find what makes you feel best. I dont know that you want your cup affixed to anything. Last thing you want is for your pants or chest pad to move in a weird way, which will happen eventually, leaving your boys unprotected. Good luck!
  11. Look at it as mid season training...keeping your endurance up....whoops...pardon the up pun.
  12. Just my very old two cents having thought about this since seeing the topic, I like the colors and to each his own -if you think/feel/believe the colors give you an edge, use them - but the use of color to gain any degree of an edge or effectiveness eludes me...like most shots. Do we use black tape or white tape? I won't get into a Socratic dialogue about it because I have loved this board for several years, I like and respect all its members, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes. Do whatever works, or you think works for you, is what any of us should do.
  13. @RichMan, I am just not sure now. I thought it was Smith but I may well be wrong. I typed in nhl colored goalie pads and Lemelin with his Aeroflexs came up. Just dont know.
  14. great job, fellas. keep it rolling; i'm jealous
  15. I am all for getting an edge but if the color of a tender's pads is key to the goalie's effectiveness.... Pretty sure Billy Smith's Kohos were the first to be colored and they werent white. Not so sure, however, the colors had much to do with his name on The Grail.
  16. The thigh/knee has been coming along pretty well. ROM greatly improving in that I can almost get my heel to my glut and the last week or so able to go descend stairs, not smoothly, but functionally. Then yesterday a not so good morning. Winter hit the Chicago area hard yesterday with snow/rain storm leaving a crap load of slippery slush. After getting off the train and crossing the Chicago river bridge on Madison Street, left foot slipped out on slush pack on the metal bridge decking sidewalk. I didnt go down but my knee and thigh was screaming murder at me. Iced up at the office and by the time I got home last night, not only was my knee the size of a basketball, but we also lost power. Less painful today and did the goalie will thing pushing though my squats today without incident. Apologies for the self pity wussy rant.
  17. This is really hard to untangle isnt it? @MTH, you are so correct about the Flyers during their run. Shero, aside from being weird, was a genius at developing systems. Didnt hurt their run either with the guy they had in goal. But there's no denying that physical intimidation was a big element of their game given the times. So strange their run was shortly after the Habs and their amazing run. Those Habs intimidated with their skill and to a lesser degree Robinson and Bouchard being physical. I agree that hits to the head have to be outlawed for the reasons mentioned by the other fellas here about size, speed, etc of modern players together with hitting from behind. Things happen so fast now days that it would be really hard to fashion bright line rules. The players though have a role to play in this situation. Bedard's deal is just a hockey play gone wrong. The younger guys have to learn, however, how to avoid putting themselves in dangerous positions as well as how to hit cleanly. How that is accomplished I just dont have any good ideas. I am not a coach and have never gone to any sort of seminar or education to be a coach. I do know that a patch on the back of a sweater wont work and to some degree implicitly removes the players' need to know how to hit and be hit and the coach's obligation to teach it. No check hockey has its place but not at advanced levels and certainly not in The Show.
  18. It was just an unfortunate set of circumstances. The collision was clean. Smith didnt do anything wrong. Bedard had his head up but between trying to control the puck, trying to get around Smith, and Smith doing his job of closing the gap, Bedard's jaw went right into the shoulder of Smith. I dont see a way to protect a player of Bedard's skill on this one. I kinda have a contrary view of the physical play. Seems to me that the watering down of hitting at the youth level has led to players as they age being ignorant of how to protect themselves from otherwise clean but heavy hits. The sport has almost become a no check sport. I dont want to go back to the gang fights of the Flyers when they won their cups but part of the sport's tradition is hitting. I get a stomach ache when I see "stop" signs on the back of sweaters. Coaches should be able to teach a check and how to avoid putting yourself in a dangerous position when about to be checked. You dont throw a kid in the pool without teaching him or her how to swim.
  19. I got Naz beat. I used a Vaughn T1000 (Vaughn's first catch glove) for about 20 years. Replaced that with a Passau 60 degrees 6 years ago. Suppose I do not fit in well here on the use of gear: I like my old stuff and repair it when needed until it cant be repaired.
  20. Purely anecdotal based on what I've seen from games on the tube. I think the goalies are terrific. When our "down game" took completely over, the goalies dominated for a long time. However, the skaters and offensive systems have adapted. Almost every shot is bar down, at the 6 and 7 holes, or plays designed to get the puck to the weak side. I also think the VH or reverse VH is being exploited by the forwards such as Nylander's goal last night and Bedard looks for it and tries to shoot at that area every game. They are waiting for the goalie to drop and shooting at the shoulder, head, or the small opening above the goalie. As a runt, I sometimes dont understand why a big man who is over 6' tall gets beat up top. I am not arguing for a return of the standup "style" - those days have gone the way of the dodo bird - but the mechanical drop to the butterfly at the time of the shot's release might be overused with today's skaters.
  21. Habs should get a win tonight unless Bedard goes more nuts than usual. For 18 years old, he's really something else.
  22. @MTH: hang in there, bud. My therapy is coming along pretty well. Began squats a few weeks ago and I am up to a puny 60 lbs but it is progress. Also doing bands for motion together with stretching, Stairs are still an issue together with swelling at the end of the work day. Long road still ahead - my surgeron and the literature on quad reattachment says about a year for full recovery. Throwing everything I have at it to shorten that time frame; very much ahead of the curve in my recovery but I am climbing the walls with no pucks coming my way. At least I can walk without much of a limp so I suppose I just have to keep stacking small "wins". Kinda sucks having to race the clock - worried about not having enough shelf life left to get back but I am trying really hard.
  23. I dont get to see the team as much as I would like but almost every time I catch them on NHL Network, Allen is in net taking a beating. From the little I've seen of Montembault, he's looked pretty good. NHL just isnt the same without the Les Habitant being a good team.
  24. Fullright

    Gear changes

Despite the repairs and the leather darkening over the years, they have held up really well over the years. They will outlive me.
