    Don’t do it

I think I’m on 8 weeks for simple straps and they’ve ghosted me

also waited something like 9+ months for a chest when I gave them the original to base it off of.

    also this

    Are these recent wait times?

If so I'm a bit surprised considering they don't seem to be a hot commodity in the nhl anymore.

How is thing holding up for you? I purchased a 2x pro before COVID started and i never got around to using it until this year. I played 2 games in it and could not get comfortable. I also had a few stingers in the arms. I went back to my old Bauer Ultra Pro (beefed up goalie crease version) that has been amazing for me but is well past its prime. Im back on the market again and this unit was one of the first things that came to my mind.

It's held up well in the year plus that I've owned this. Coming from a beefed up brown I've definitely gotten my fair share of stingers in this unit. The two main issues i've been having is the odor and the outer arm flaps sometimes fold and get tucked inward. Not sure if that issue is because this unit isn't made off of my measurements.

  3. Can't give any advice for fixing it as I'm not too handy with the sewing machine. You could also look into bringing it into a shop that'll fix it but depending on the price you might as well get a new one.

If you're looking for a new jock I recently made the jump to the Vaughn Ventus SLR Pro Carbon Double Cup.

So I have Chenner's old Kenesky PP1. It has held up incredibly well playing an average of two mid-level beer league games a week. I made some small mods to beef up the bicep and shoulder areas, but everything else has been great.

Good to hear, I was a bit skeptical when I first got it and played around with the strapping. Coming from a Brown chest protector I'm not use to having all the strapping options at the back. I don't hear very many people talking about Kenesky's chesties anymore.

What was the issue with the Brown out of curiosity?

I made a few posts about the situation on the Brown chest protector thread back in November. Long story short he didn't want to make me a streamlined version.

I'm more of a classic clean combo guy. I've worn the SK2000/HM30 Osgood, Cloutier, the SK600/HM30 Tretiak, Vernon, the Sk2000/HM50? Hasek, Prussek, the JOFA390/bubble cage. I did try an Itech cage and another Cooper bubble cage that the number escapes me.

All of these were available in pictures on the old GSBB (R.I.P.).

The newer Thomas and Kaskisuo combos look cool but I haven't seen one live. They remind me of the old JOFA mask combo. Another company also had a built on plastic cheek/chin plate. I forgot the name, again. I had one of those as well. Winwell I believe?

I've always liked the Osgood and Cloutier look, I get flak from the guys for wanting that combo look. I guess there's not a lot of 20-30 year old guys that dig that style. I recently just got a Coveted 2 piece combo and I'm loving it so far, in all honesty besides the better vision and fit to my head I cant notice a huge difference coming from my old Eddy mask.

  7. So can anyone update how their PP1's are holding up in the long run?

After a failed attempt at getting a streamlined chestie made by Brown I put my name on the waitlist in Nov for a PP1. I saw Mike post a pro return up for sale on his facebook page, I ended up biting the bullet and buying it since the measurements were similar to my current Brown.

I'll post some pictures of it shortly.

Ask Howie if he has ever come to Hong Kong for the Hockey 5s. I actually played for one of the Vancouver group of guys.

Jasper was on my team last year on the Gaggia team. He now works for Gaggia, which is a coffee company. He also became a father recently so congrats to him.

Small world eh. Yea I saw he and his wife have a baby boy now, he use to light me up during our old roller days.

Yes. I play with and against many of the HK national team players here both players and goalies. Which one of them is the one in Vancouver now?

There are a few guys from Vancouver that used to come here to play in the international tournament pre-Covid. It was a pretty big tournament with teams from all over the world including Europe, Asia and many North American players. We've even had a few former NHLers participate in the past.

Nice, its great to see that hockey is alive and well over there.

The guy I see out here is named Howard (Howie) and the buddy of mine out your way is named Jasper.

Just curious how tight do you guys do up the straps on the arm. There are four sections straps:

    1) The elbow floaters that are attached by the velcro straps,

    2) The upper elastic straps behind the biceps,

    3) The lower elastic straps just above the wrists, and

    4) The velcro straps at the wrist.

    Thanks

I'd say my elbows and the elastics are a happy medium between tight and loose and I like the wrists on the tighter end. I haven't had to touch any of the elastics for years.

Sounds like both of you like the waist straps fairly on the tight side.

I ask because I tried my (new and still fairly stiff) 2400 on the other day during a coaching session with some kids that were mostly in the 10 to 14 age group. I had the waist straps on as tight as can be and I found that it would make the upper chest area bulge up and out a little because the waist would move up a little. So I loosened it a little and it relieved that upper situation. I think this is because it is still brand new as this was the first time wearing the 2400 with full equipment on.

I haven't been using suspenders up to this point, which means that the pants are also done up as tight as I could do them.

My wife is finally home so I won't be able wear it to sleep anymore. Yes, believe it or not, I did wear it to sleep on a few nights. lol

    Thanks for your responses.

I recall having the same thing happening when I first got my 2400. I use to tuck when I had bigger pants as well as use suspenders. My chest protector is now around 5 years old and I don't have that issue anymore. With time it'll loosen up and feel like it's a part of you. Only thing I find is that the arms are still not as mobile as I'd like, but I think that has to do with the Russian spec arm protection.

The question of whether you tuck in or leave outside of the pants has been asked many times.

For those of you that have the 2400 and you leave it out, do you have the waist straps on tight, loose, or in the middle? And why?

I wear my 2400 out without any suspenders, all I do is tie my pants to my chest protector through the front loop with lace. I have the waist straps done up tight, I usually get one of the guys to yank on them.

I inquired about having my shoulder floaters reduced to an NHL spec size but I don't remember the reason he said he couldn't do it.  Something about the measurements wouldn't be right if the rest of my unit wasn't in spec.  I think he took my request a little too literally so I just let it go.

Did you end up getting it reduced by anyone else?

I am a self proclaimed Brown fanboy and this sounds like total BS to me.  I had my elbow floaters trimmed down and there is no sacrifice anywhere.  I even had the inside panel on both elbow floaters removed and still haven't had issues.  As much as I do love John's c/a his elbow floater design is terrible.

I'm a big fan of what they're doing over there at Brown, which is why I contacted them to do this in the first place. I'd rather support the little guys when I can. John wasn't rude in his contact with me but it was just strange being lectured by him about how NHL spec isn't safe, etc etc. The lady I was dealing with after was also very nice and apologetic but I was still getting the vibe that I'm the only average joe that ever requested the NHL spec from them, they seemed rather confused as to why I wanted to ditch my Russian spec c/a for a streamlined one.

Would he make you a 3 piece top and bottom floater design like on the Vaughns? That should increase flexibility.

Hmm I think the issue is that he doesn't agree with these NHL streamlined chest protectors, so he refuses to make anything meeting those specs for non-pro players. I recall reading his comment on a older social media post about his distaste for smaller more mobile chest protectors and that bigger is better. I own a five year old Russian spec 2400 from him and the thing is a beast. Having tried out a friends more streamlined C/A that's what got me wanting to go down the Kenesky route or trying to see if Brown can make it happen. So from what I gather I doubt he's going to make the 3 piece design because the smaller design is still "dangerous" to him.

The only thing I can think of is the website is updated so rarely that perhaps it meant the previous spec. But either way, stinks you can’t get what you want.

Got in touch with someone else through their social media to get a better understanding and they replied with:

“Oh shoot, sorry about that. What he may not have explained is that the nhl spec is really just smaller elbow floaters. They have to be a certain width to be legal in the nhl. Unfortunately this makes the elbow rather tight and not the best flexibility for goalies that are just playing for fun.

Other than that... we can make you anything”

Regardless this goes down as one of the strangest ordering process I’ve gone through.

So is it the new NHL-spec unit you wanted or did you want it even more streamlined than that? If it’s just the former, I don’t see why he wouldn’t do it unless he’s afraid of liability with selling it to the general public due to reduced safety.
Perhaps if you told him your name was Ilya or Vlad he’d do it.

Yea I asked him for the current NHL spec unit, I respect his opinion but what caught me off guard was that it’s advertised on their site that they can do the 2400 in the NHL spec.

Their social media, Facebook and Instagram, are way more current than his website.
I found this post from July 15th:

Alexei new NHL Spec Chest and Arm for playing for the with the Sharks.

Alexei Melnichuk must be who they’re referring to. He’s a prospect.

Him as well as Ilya Samsonov of the capitols are wearing them. The Russians love their Brown C/A's

I can't wait to see this.  I had my elbow floaters modified by @Keeps33to be NHL spec a few years ago while he had to make some other repairs.  I got mine built about 10 years ago I think.  It was after the NHL cracked down on all the extra bullshit people added to their c/a's but it was before the most recent streamlined rules took effect.

I'll be sure to post some pictures. John has been a bit on the slower end at responding to my emails so the ordering process has been a bit longer then I remember, it's all good though he must be busy. I've been wanting to get a streamlined version made for some time and seeing that one or two Russian goaltenders in the NHL use them got me intrigued. I was wanting a Kenesky unit as well but the 5-6 month wait kind of turned me off.
