I don't mean to sound off like a dick or anything it's just frustrating. I echo what Matt said, I love it when they do try to help. When defense is played well it's a thing of beauty to watch.

Yeah I don't give my D a hard time about it because they usually apologize right afterwards. But I got annoyed at one dman for too much effort as he crashed into me on a sliding backcheck. Great effort, but it's just shinny dude.

My favourite is playing in lower divisions and having defense play pseudo goalie and getting in my way because they're not used to a goalie being mobile once down.

They get a lot of guys that once they're on their knees, even getting back up is a task.

How old are you? Your day will come. 🙂

Is there a reasonable way to tell your D men to stop screening and redirecting shots into the net?

I was really thinking about giving them my gloves and stick ... "here, you play goalie!"

it happens at all levels, even the nhl, and i'm sure they get coached and watch video replays. it's unlikely anything you say will make a difference.

  4. So it's our year end tournament, the Mashup, and I experimented with sharpening my skates with a high inside edge. The result, better pushes and I felt more stable in my stance. Keep in mind, that's all relative - I'm just an okay skater.

I did more skating by reffing the following game in my goalie gear. I felt smoother and more stable too. I'll say that it was a successful experiment, and I'll give the edges a touch up before tomorrow's game.

  5. I reffed a game today. It's our year end Mashup tournament and the team that just finished playing has to ref the next game. No one wanted to do it so I volunteered. The twist, I skated in my goalie skates, pants and pads. I figured I'd get some extra skating practice in. To pick up the puck I would drop down on one pad and slide to it. Okay, probably not helpful so let's see what some others have to say.

  6. Did my skates for the first time after practicing on some old skates. I had my first skate on them on Saturday and they were fine. I was worried that I would f*ck them up. The edges weren't perfect, i.e. level, but close enough that it wasn't adversely affecting my movements. Hopefully will get better and I will experiment with the inside edges.

Update: I've had a few lessons as a full right goalie, and played a ball hockey pickup game yesterday. It definitely is easier to play dump-ins full right than it was regular. My body is still adjusting to carrying the stick in the other hand, but overall I haven't found it more difficult to make saves full right than it was regular. I'll have to see how I do in actual gameplay playing full right.

Cool. I just bought a set of full right gloves from Sideline Swap to try the same thing. They're Vaughn Velocity 7700 which is what my regular gloves are! They're not red, though. That would have been too perfect. Next I bought a Warrior STR2 RH stick from The Hockey Shop, again to match my regular stick.

Unfortunately my season ends in a couple of weeks but hopefully I'll get a couple of games in before that.

Convenience only. The traditional way probably performs better.  I have made my life difficult when I forget to re-zero the holder for a different pair of skates ;)

i'll concentrate doing a basic sharpening first then trying other customizations later. thanks.

I've tried it multiple ways by adjusting the holder tilt or centering, but all I do now is run the de-burring stone on the inside edge like I'm de-burring, and then use the stone to flatten and dull the outside edge.  I don't mess with the holder anymore just because it is too easy to screw it up, and I do sharpen other skates besides my own.

hey thanks for the reply. I just bought a used fleming gray b2 machine so still learning, but i can only raise/lower the blade relative to the grinding wheel.

is convenience the main reason for doing it this way? does it perform the same as if you did it the 'traditional' way?

I sold my Sparx and bought a Wissota so that I could mess with in between hollows.  On my 3mm steel I usually run approximately 3/8", and on my 4mm it is closer to 5/8".  I'll make minor adjustments based on outside air temperature.  I also raise the inside edges and dull the outside ones.  Frequency?  Every three or four skates in the summer on softer ice, and every couple of skates in the winter.  I have purchased the FBV adapter from Wissota and some dressing wheels from Blackstone and plan to give FBV a shot in a couple of weeks.   I love sharpening my own skates!

how do you raise the inside edge? do you offset the blade up or down from the centre point?

  11. You must be vaccinated to play at our arena. Masks are required but it is not strictly followed but I do wear a mask in the arena, including in the dressing room. We spread out in a few rooms and there's usually no more than 4 people in our room.

I wear my tights under my sweats and don't shower at the arena anymore. I am in and out, no socializing pre or post game. I don't drink anymore so I'm not missing anything.

Women change in their own room, though when I walked into my usual room yesterday, there was a woman changing in there. I had to wait for her to finish because my gear is stored in the dressing room. I'm a fast changer as I tend to show up 15 minutes before ice time.

I took another look at my mask when I got home from work and found that the vinyl is already lifting in some places. Haven’t even played in it yet

I’m now I bit wary of sweating and drinking water in this thing. Guess this is a mainly temporary alternative to painting?

You could try putting some clear nail polish on the edges to keep it from lifting.

I like the Passau bag, but I'm not paying $50 in shipping, sorry. I even asked if I could ship it to my sister's house near London (Ontario that is) as Canadian shipping was like less than $20, but no dice. My search continues....

Couldn't you ask your sister to buy it for you (and repay her, of course)? Some places will only ship to the cardholder's address for security reasons.

I thought they used pretty good foam. I remember it was the nicer 3M foam instead of the nash ones that harden.

At least that's what they used when Tony refubed my Mage.

My Mage RS has rubatex foam but my older Ricochet has the black foam. Not sure what that is called. Is that the "better" foam?
