Boddam gear
in Gear
On 1/1/2018 at 8:09 PM, daffy said:I've been in Boddam long enough that i figured i should really do abit of a review. This thread is also for all things Boddam.
Im now on my third set of pads and fourth blocker. Still haven't tried the glove but maybe someone else can comment.
I play beer league against everyone from life long rec players to former pros. I grew up watching Ed Belfour, Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. I play butterfly but get up on the wrong foot alot and sometimes not the smoothest moving around the crease. I end up throwing up a two pad stack once in awhlie but never a kicksave as my groin and abductors are shot from arthritis in the hips.
The blocker
I love Boddam blockers. All 4 i have owned have been stock except for the intermediate palm for my smaller hand. I disagree with people who say a blocker is a blocker. The balance is great on the Boddam blocker. I find the hand placement just right as well. Its more in the center of the board and with the curved face, i can deflect pucks well over the net if im a bit behind tracking the puck and just get a piece. Rebounds dont fly off the blocker but do go to the corners without having to punch it that way. Figure protection is good. Ive never had any issues with it. No injured fingers. Weight is good. I dont place a premium on weight but this blocker is as light as any ive put on in the store. The one thing about Boddam blockers is you cant get a bindless one. Jason just doesnt like how it turns out so he hasnt bothered to offer one.
Pads - Hybrid model
As you can see from who i followed when i was younger, a hybrid pad is ideal for me. A narrow butterfly is the reason for a double break. The pad is soft but it is firmer than the original version. Very soft boot break and the pad has lateral flex in the shin. The pad internals are more traditional which does contribute to alittle more weight than most pads today. As mentioned, i put a premium more on comfort tham weight. Im sure the Patriot or Refuze pad would be much lighter. I like my pads locked down to my foot so i continue to use an open toe and boot strap. Tapered toe and thigh rise. I move so much better with the taper. I havent had issues with pucks through the 5 hole as the pads are 34+3. I use sno seal on them and am able to slide well. Perhaps not as well as a pure butterfly pad but works well for me. The straps are all adjustable or removable so ive been experimenting with different strapping. I asked for a softer knee landing since the old knees are wearing out and i do notice the new pads are softer than the last pair i had. Jason was good to work with. My new pads are the same as the first ones i had which lasted 5 years. He is open to making a pad that works for you. I did have some issues getting him to do open toe again but he was able to get it done.
Quality has been good on both the pads and blockers ive owned. They are well put together and ive faced some really good players without any issues.
Let me know if you have any questions.
