I used a pair of Bauer 3X pads over the weekend. They overall felt rather nice, oddly springy with how soft-but-stiff they were.

    My main opinions are:

    • Loved the huge rebounds
    • The straps felt pretty comparatively crappy
      • The professor strap in particular really dug into my leg, and I usually use a professor strap
    • It was interesting having a pad that felt like it moved all at once; every butterfly was either the pad is entirely on the ice, or entirely not on the ice
      • I think I do prefer having some torsional movement in the pad compared to this, made leaning feel strange
    • Can't speak to sliding, it felt fine but it was a relatively easy game and I didn't have much snow accumulation
    • Toebox felt strange, I had a little trouble getting into my RVH as easily as I'm normally accustomed to it being

Final opinion: I'd wear them regularly, but I would not buy them personally. They do perform very well and I don't have much basis to compare them to other senior level pieces.

    What were you coming from?

If you are in Canada, and can send me your dimension, I could send you some of the 3M if I have enough left on the roll.

    EDIT: for free that is

Thanks so much but I'm in Colorado.  I'll give these other brands a test and report back.  Thanks again!

  3. So I tried again without heat and actually had worse results.   However, doing more research, it seems the issue may be the fact that the VVivid film I purchased is vinyl (PVC) vs. polyurethane based. The PVC is less malleable and generally less durable than the poly based film. E.g. the 3m film is poly film.

So I have some Vvivd poly film and a third party film being shipped now, given 3m is out of stock everywhere.  I'll update when I get it on and test.

  4. Tried this with the Vivid - the sliding was incredible...

However, on the first skate the vinyl shattered and started peeling up.  I'm using this product.

Tried again and reapplied new sheets, thinking maybe I used too much heat and same thing happened this afternoon.

Is this the version everyone is using successfully?

    C/A: Vaughn 5500

    Pants: CCM Premier Pro

I tuck my C/A in and have my suspenders hold my C/A down. Wished Vaughn would still make the 5500. Its by far the best mobile C/A I have used. And the protection is pretty good.

I am very late here, but just want to share my love for the 5500 as well.  I have five of them and the last one is nearly dead.  Bruises never every game but it only makes me love it more.  Not sure where I go next.

Pic of most of the family attached.

As far as how I wear it, with my heavily modified Vaughn 3700 pants from 2001, I loop the elastic side clips through my pant belt.
