That's a whole lot of "at best backups".

I guess that must've changed come the C/A reduction. I know at one point they had a stranglehold.

100%.  It's crazy seeing pictures from 10-15 years ago, it feels like 50% of the NHL was wearing Velocity pads, now it's essentially no one.  I can sort of understand why, my V9 set seemed well made but I didn't get along with any of it.

Isn't Vaughn still #1 when it comes to C/A and Pants usage in the NHL? At least they're still carving out a section on the pro side since their Velocity line has practically disappeared from the show.

Aside from Quick's V2's, who else is even using the Velocity line? Feels like all Vaughn users are SLR guys.

There are several, but nobody prominent.  Mrazek, Stalock, Stauber, Driedger, I'm sure there are others.

  3. Consult with the orthopedic surgeon scheduled for November 14.  Yeehaw.

We'll see what happens.  Not at all committed to having hip surgery, but it's the only way I'll be back on the ice in goalie gear.  At 37 I'm more concerned with making the hips I was born with last as long as possible now than resurrecting a beer league hockey career, but it'd certainly be nice to be able to get back in the net.

Trav is actually great at cinematography.

I'm also 90% sure that his entire reason he was able to get into the FPHL in the first place was to bring eyes to a new expansion team. He got routinely passed over for playing time by guys getting called up when their starter was hurt/called up himself.

There's a reason his only playing time was because the starter got kicked out for fighting.

He really is!  And he's a good communicator. His podcast can be genuinely entertaining, IMO.

I've always thought the same thing about him being in the FPHL, though I am curious to see how he does following surgery.

Dembones and Goalie Crease Guardian are both great channels. Go figure they're both EBUG's.

That they are. And both are better goaltenders than Trav is. Ridgen's real talent is making videos, not stopping pucks, which for the record is TOTALLY fine.

Oh, I do, for sure.  Best set I've ever had and I've seen huge improvements on my game in this set.  I'm just joining in on some harmless gear talk on here and speculating about the future for me and gear.  I'm not shopping or really in the market right now.  My V9 set is only 2 years old and still going strong.

That said, IF I had $3000 laying around with nothing else to do with it, these are my options:

    1) Vaughn SLR3 pads, Vaughn SLR3 blocker, Vaughn Velocity 9 glove (I'd never buy anything with V10 graphics)

    2) Bauer Mach full set

    3) True latest and greatest with knee rolls, full set ( I honestly don't know True gear names)

I'm pretty sure if my hips miraculously healed themselves and I started playing again I'd go with some PX3s, but I liked my V9s too. The guy I sold them to seems really happy with the set.

I did play around with the V10 customizer for funsies and got a design I was pretty happy with, but it's still definitely not my favorite graphic.

oh, yeah, squishy vs not-squishy.  It's a thing.

I wouldn't order Velocity pads again.  Maybe SLR? But honestly, I want to try Bauer or True.

I have WAY more hesitation about switching the mitts, especially the trapper.  I've honesly never put on another trapper that I felt good about.  There are some True trappers around here now but they are difficult to close in the stores.  Blockers mostly bug me about the shape/look than feel so not too worried there.

I thought you liked your V9s!  What gives?

Quite the difference between 32 and 33 over the course of 20 years!

Holy cow! That's quite the difference. I wore 35" Velocity V1s way back when, for what it's worth.

    Hi everyone,

My name is Colton, long time reader but first time poster. I have really enjoyed everyone's comments and insight into gear and wanted to get some advice. I finally ordered a custom set of pads (my first ever) and went from an int 32 TPS bionic set that I loved to a 33+0 vaughn pve2. I went to my local goaliemonkey as well as talked to the guys at vaughn before ordering and gave them my specs and sized into a 33 inch pad. (17.25 ATK, 5'10" with a size 9 skate) I just received them and they seem huge, hopefully just growing pains.

My issue is going down into my butterfly, I keep landing at the bottom and sliding off the knee block. They seem like they fit when i'm down in a VH, but putting both legs down seems to be a problem. I haven't had them on the ice yet so could just be that they are in my basement. I also don't wear any knee pads or anything under my pads, would this make a difference? Does anyone have any ideas/insight? Thanks so much in advance!

    33+0?  Innnnteresting.

I'm also 5'10", 17.5" ATK and had 33+2 V9s.  I usually landed pretty squarely on the knee block, but if I ran the professor strap tighter they'd sit a bit higher, which would cause me to land on the lower half of the knee stack.  The thigh rise was tall too, and when I'd get into extended positions the thigh rise would actually be tall enough to jam into my hip crease.  This was driven in large part by how much they'd ride up my legs in that scenario with a tighter professor strap, but very uncomfortable and not at all helpful for my movement.

Assuming the PVE fits like the V9s, I think you'd probably be better off in a 32.  But you can always try them on with your skates, drop into the butterfly, and just see where you land on the knee stack.

Sad to see you go mon ami. Enjoy the retired life.

Thanks amigo.  In truth I've been gone for awhile, I haven't been on the ice in six months.  At least selling the gear will allow me to pick up some forward stuff and be around the game again, even if it's not in net.

I actually just sent my MRI, X-Rays, and PT notes to Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York - he's the same guy who did Demko's surgery.  I feel zero pain or restriction in my hips most of the time now that I'm not playing anymore, but I still have some moments here and there where things get pinchy and don't feel quite right.  They'll probably tell me it's not worth having surgery to revive a beer league goaltending career, and I'd agree, but I also want to get their opinion on whether or not I'm maybe accelerating the wear and tear on my hips leading toward arthritis and ultimately replacements if I don't have the arthroscopic procedures done.  I'd rather do it now at 36 than wait until I'm too old for it to be successful.

Vaughn also charges for custom colors..

Custom as in not available via the customizer?

The comments re: extra charges from Vaughn for simple modifications was not what I experienced.

    On my V9 set:

    • SLR style professor strap - no charge
    • Stiff option thigh rise - no charge
    • Face layered with carbon fiber (SLR style) - $80 extra
    • HD foams on landing side, including the calf wedge - no charge
    • Below knee knee strap - no charge
    • Nylon backing instead of air mesh - no charge
    • +1" Y strap - no charge
    • Full face carbon on the blocker - no charge
    • Rigid side board (stock V9 sidewall is pretty soft) - no charge
    • Pro palm in the catcher - no charge
    • Reinforced Double T (both sides) - no charge
    • Skate lace pocket (outsides) - no charge

I didn't do embroidery, though, because I am/was a beer league bum and figured it'd be easier to sell the set someday without my name all over it.

  12. @BiffBadass So cool to see you back out on the ice, that's fantastic!

My inability to play because of my hips has me feeling like I've lost a limb or something.  And yet, I'm not having resurfacing surgery because I have no restrictions doing anything else that I want to do.  It's only playing goal that causes any pain. I think it's time to just bit the bullet and go pick up some forward gear.

Whoa I missed this 6 months ago.  Not sure if you're still playing, but hope things are well

The number in the front is the amount of flat ground in front of blade center, and the number in the rear is the total amount of flat ground into the blade.

In this case, a 55/110 CAG is a 110mm flat spot with 55mm of that in front of blade center.  so a 65/110 would still be a 110mm flat spot, but with 65mm of that in front of blade center.

The rest of the radius stays the same.  So if you kept your original stock profile and added a CAG, the rest of the blade in front of and behind the CAG would be the stock 30'

You could get the 20'/32' or whatever else you want and stick a CAG on it.  That's basically what a Goalie SAM boils down to, (a 10'/27' with a 25/50mm CAG).  The problem with a SAM is that if you want to have it pitched forward, the flat spot moves toward the back of the blade - which doesn't make sense to me

Thanks man, I'm good. I'm 100% retired from goaltending at this point, but I still pop over here occasionally because who knows why. I just miss being on the ice I guess. Thanks for the response, though. That was exactly the answer I was looking for. 😂

Would've been nice to see a comparison with using some sort of leg-skate setup to proof the boot riser etc. Sure there would still be a margin of error but now only putting the pads on a flat surface to show how the height of two pads equal. Not comparing how they differ when set on top of skates.

That is my thought as well.  Putting each pad on a bench doesn't necessarily reflect how the pad will sit on your skate.  The flatter the boot, the lower your skate will be in the scoop, effectively making the pad fit bigger.  Given the V9 boot is deeper than most others on the market these days, that's at least my hypothesis as to why the knee stack on the V9 appears taller than the others.  Conversely the 20.2 probably has a flatter boot than all or most of the others, making the knee stack appear lower than it would actually fit.

    Not entirely correct.

I sized down in 20.1 from 33" to 32".  I stuck with 32" on 20.2 and actually prefer it.  FTK a little more than 19.5

That's what I meant, if not well articulated.  It's just that the video from InGoal would suggest sizing up relative to other brands, rather than down.  I think most with just over a 19.5" FTK measurement would probably wear a 33" E-Flex, for example.  We're about the same size and that's what I wear, anyway.

Don't mind me, I just found their comments re: the 20.2 surprising.

  16. This is an interesting video as it relates to sizing the 20.2s.  OP went down to 32s from 33s, but based on this videos it looks like one might actually want to size up with the 20.2s?  What they only briefly cover, though, is the effect the scoop and depth of the boot has on sizing.

As it relates to my own pads (33+2 V9s), I wonder if the reason they may appear to be bigger is because the boot isn't as flat on the bottom and comes come farther over the skate?  No idea.  They definitely are a little bigger than I expected (5'10" with a FTK of 19.75").
