  1. Great! I'll do a few pick up sessions, and put an ad looking for ice time. Yea, no problem for me playing with higher skill levels. Sometimes I would personally prefer it just because I've found my chances of getting ran down or blasted in the head are higher with less skilled players. Happened a lot when I played with lower div players in inline. Poor skating ability, and the shots just had power and no direction. I also like the challenge! Thanks!
  2. Thanks! I'll do my skate session on Saturday and if all works well, either in the evening or Sunday off to the rink for a game.
  3. I have two cities to work with right now, one being 20 mins from my place so lots of options to see where the free spots are, just wasn't sure how this all worked. Now I got a better idea. Ideally I would prefer to tend for 1 hour to 2 hours if possible, but I understand if others show up as well we all got to share the space, I just don't like the idea of driving out, hauling all my stuff, getting dressed, then playing for 15 minutes.
  4. I don't have time for any drama with other goalies or anyone for that matter, but I'll see how this works. I would've just went free agent for the winter season, but I might be locked down to a certain schedule for the next month or so. Pick up will have to do for now.
  5. Thanks! This makes sense. At this point I'm stuck with pick up for now so I'll give it a go. 30 Minutes of play is still better than nothing as I'm just getting into ice from inline.
  6. Nice! I'm a bit nervous on the sliding around and what not! Post to post, ect... I'll see how my first skate goes on the weekend. I had a slot to play tonight but didn't because I would rather make sure I got the skating part down first to a reasonable level.
  7. We couldn't even bring bottles to the net for league play. Pick up wasn't an issue but I kept a towel near by to keep the surface dry otherwise it didn't take much to end up flipping in the air. How I managed the heat all those years is beyond me!
  8. I've played inline for a decade and I'm going to start doing public shinny to get into ice hockey next week, but I'm looking for some tips. For inline I did use pad covers but sliding wasn't really a thing for me, never tried any of the plates or tape. I also don't drop down at every shot as I'm on the shorter side and normally play more out while cutting the angle off as much as possible and skating up, and backwards as the play pushes towards the net. My style is pretty much a hybrid, so I'll do butterfly at times but mostly half butterfly and more stand up. Ice apparently is another beast! I'm a big fan of The Puck Stops Here by Jim Park. This style of play actually served me really well for inline. I also skate when I play inline, but I'm not sure how much of that is applicable. I'm going to go to some open skate times with my goalie skates to get accustomed to them because I've only ever used player skates, and I'm expecting some differences based on how the blades differ. The least I can do is make sure I don't flop like a fish on the ice as I'm attempting to make my way to the net! What tips can anyone provide to help me with the transition to Ice Hockey from Inline? All my gear is covered as I always had full ice hockey for inline. I just had to pick up socks.
  9. I'm going to start Ice Hockey in a week or so as I've been playing inline for around a decade. How do these public shinny groups manage with goalies? I've seen a few public rec centres which require registration and only allow a maximum of 4 goalies, while others don't have an online form, the goalies just show up with no max listed. For the centres with 4 goalies they play for an hour so I did call and asked how it works, do the goalies play 30 minutes each or something? The answer I got was it is up to the goalies what happens. Most of the time I either see 2 or 3 goalies booked, rarely a full 4, so not really a problem - but not everyone books online so even if I see 2 open spots people can still come regardless. The other centres are 2 hours of time and no registration for goalies, you just go to the rink and get a wrist band then off to the dressing room and off the to ice after. Probably more manageable with subs, assuming not a lot of goalies come out. During my inline pick up it was 2 goalies max, and we played for a few hours. We did have a backup list just in the event of a last minute cancelation, but never actually had goalie subs. I'm new to this public scene as all my games were private invite only groups, but I found it odd to have to haul all my gear to the rink to maybe play 15-30 minutes in net or less. Wasn't sure if this is the norm? Thankfully there are lots of rinks so I can try to pick one where there are either 3 or 4 open spots for goalie and see what happens. The late night ones always look open.
  10. I gave it a try on my BAUER PRO SENIOR GOALIE KNEE PADS and it works pretty good for the most part. The Bauer Senior Garter belt isn't the best but it should work come game time. Pretty much unless I forcefully push down on the knee pads it stays in place, otherwise the belt would start slipping down. Leg kicks and going down and back up seem to work fine. Having hairy legs doesn't help either as knee pads just slide more freely.
  11. I decided to start using knee guards again but I don't wear socks, plus my compression shorts are too tight to go over top so I need a garter belt to prevent them from falling down. I couldn't find any goalie belts locally, and sadly I cannot wait to get one shipped so I'm going to pick up a player one tomorrow for $10.00 then modify it by sewing on straps, or maybe just use skate lace in the loop and tie it through the loop on the knee guards to hold them up. I know one other goalie actually did this but used zip ties so hopefully this works out! Anyone else modify or use a player garter belt for this? I also thought about sewing in a velcro strap inside my pants, but I really didn't want to modify it in the event I sell it off later on.
  12. It would be this one: https://www.prohockeylife.com/products/ccm-axis-1-9-sr-goalie-mask?variant=31072304693325 On the tag it shows: GFA 1.9 (CCM Senior GFA Axis 1.9 Hockey Goalie Mask) I really like the cage on this, and especially the leather washers too. Fits really good too.
  13. Long day of trying on masks. The Bauer's sadly just wont work for me anymore, too tight on the forehead and cheeks. Even went to their highest model to try, slight difference. The Warrior masks feel odd on the forehead too and have some swag near the chin. Sportmask X8s look very well made, but I tried both the Small and Medium and Small is so uncomfortable, I would need a rectangle head. The medium was just wobbling around. I ended up with the CCM 1.9 which fits like a glove! Had to get the medium one as the small was too tight.
  14. I recently got a new small medium Bauer but I'm struggling with fit more and more. I'm around 55.88cm - 56cm give or take a bit depending on how tight one wraps the measuring tape. This means I'm at the end of one sizing, and the start of another which really causes me some problems. I used a medium Bauer years back, then recently got the small medium due to the medium large having too much movement when shaking my head, but now I'm finding the small medium is giving my headaches due to the tightness. The Bauer I had before was on these sizes for the S/M and M/L S/M 53 - 57cm. M/L 56 - 60cm. I fall into a bad spot being at around 56cm where I find the S/M being great for the most part, just overly tight at the top, and I'm not able to give up any more strap. Then the M/L just moves too much. I'm looking at a few masks right now ( I cannot go custom mold right now due to game commitments ) - The Bauer 950 does have Small / Med / Large so I'm not stuck like before. Bauer Senior 950 CCM Senior GFA Axis 1.9 Sportmask Senior X8 Warrior Senior Ritual F1 SR+ I'm going to go try some on tomorrow and see, but wanted to check if anyone has any input on the quality of the above? These should all be non plastic as far as I know. If I was off for a bit I would just go custom but I'm too committed right now. Also my budget cannot really go beyond these models, already did some upgrades and the budget is pretty limited now, already trying to get rid of my other Bauer.
  15. So for the blocker I took out the three pieces of foam padding, and for the glove I really cannot because I need to remove all the lacing which I wont do so I'll have at it soon! The pants are done, which worked really good. Now the chest protector is on round 3 due to brown water still... Oxyclean bath is working good, I just rinse after and squeeze as much water as possible out then off to the drying rack with the big fan. I then sprayed some "CAPTODOR ODOUR DESTROYER" as a final touch.
  16. Thank you! I intend on doing this yearly as well, I just have some older gear I need to clean and didn't want to risk ruining my stuff with ozone so thought to ask about oxyclean baths.
  17. Thanks! Yea, with the pads I think I'll just keep spraying them as usual. I don't want to risk submerging them in water. Thanks for the tips!
  18. I have a CCM blocker too, love the large size for coverage. For the foam I would just leave it out and not clean it I assume? I wouldn't want that to deform. plus my main concern is the palm anyhow.
  19. Ended up fixing it, had to grind it off, then cut where the foam was to replace the piece, and use a new screw and nut. Everything is fine now, but not a fun experience.
  20. I need to really clean my gear and was wondering if submerging my blocker for 15 mins or so for a few cycles in an oxyclean bath is safe? Do I take the foam out of the blocker? If so how do I clean that if at all? I came across a few posts online where people had warped their blockers from doing this and I just want to know the process and not ruin my gear. I also need to clean my glove, chest, pants. I'm not sure about my pads as they're the old school type and I think they'll get ruined. I'm also looked into ozone but found it can break down your materials so to avoid.
  21. I wish that was the reason! This was a brand new buy and this happened.
  22. Okay, I'll have to do it for the one part once I figure out how to get this piece out, maybe I'll need to grind it off... I've never cross threaded a screw with all the masks I've had prior. This one is pretty stuck!
  23. Hi everyone! I just bought a new Bauer mask, but I've noticed after cross threading a screw during a cage replacement as I didn't like the stock one that the internal nut is actually inside the foam and not behind! I forgot to turn counterclockwise before going in which was a stupid mistake, and now I have a problem where I need to gut the foam to replace the part after I get the screw out. Is this supposed to be the norm for these masks now? If so has anyone just applied a different install like other masks, and then just glued in the foam after? The mask fits well, and this is my only complaint so far. This seems like a bad flaw, not sure if anyone else has experienced this problem.
