  1. I played about 800 games+shinny over 4 years. Never took any time off and burnout hit me really hard. I was dreading going to every game. I went from excitement for games to being like "ahhh fuck i have hockey tonight"

I took 3 months off and informed my team that i wasn't playing summer or winter season.

Now im just getting back into playing. I'm going twice a week to shinny where I take some edibles and have a few shots of vodka before going onto the ice. Just going out and having fun with no worry about the results.

Its really helped me find my love for the game again.

  2. So I set my Konekts to the tightest it could go on the ankle but it wasn’t enough. I adjusted the hardware which allows you to tighten the ankle strap more but now the issue is I can’t snap the buckle closed because the extra length on the strap gets in the way.

I’ll add a pic to make this make more sense.

I was wondering if anyone’s had this issue and if you can cut that length off?

It was much better. Less ankle stress. Worked out great, I'm sticking with these from now on. Thanks for the interest :)

Are those just pro laces that have been taped to add slack?

Really it sounds like you are saying they are backups, which illustrates that management doesn’t know how to identify elite goaltenders. This is not a new problem. Both organizations inexplicably thought Campbell was their guy. He actually looks like a beer league goalie when he plays. Would anyone ever think that Mike Smith or Mikko Koskinen were anything more than good or average backup goalies? Samsonov and Skinner might actually be good. I don’t know because they play on teams who are clueless defensively. It should not be lost on anyone that Adin Hill was languishing on two bad teams before going to the Vegas organization. They were forced to use him as their fourth option due to injuries. Turns out he’s actually pretty good when playing on a team that’s not incompetent. Now he’s their guy and it’s going quite well.

mike smith had a .923 and .915 sv% his last 2 years with us and his goals saved above expected was 6th in the NHL. He was elite for the oilers. His puck playing made the D look better than they were.

Who else is absolutely giddy with the embarrassment that is the 2023-2024 Oilers right now?

Over the past few years I've realized that I no longer care about supporting a team in the NHL and that my joy mostly comes from rooting against teams.

So (ignoring Boston), I'm enjoying this season.

Im more of a hockey analyst/goalie supporter than the average fan who just yells stuff at their tv. gets drunk and calls into the radio shows. The decade of darkness was a good way to stop getting so emotionally invested in just a game. I'm still an oilers fan to some extent but i honestly don't really care if we were to blow the team up. Its kind of fun to just interact with the fans who act like this game affects their life.

A thing I've learned with regards to juggling is that it's not very helpful once you've learned how to do it. You'll need to change it up or add in subsections to it (like calling out the number on the ball you are about to toss that's visible to you, or doing bounce juggling with balls that aren't spherical to make it more reactive). Adding these small changes can help keep your brain engaged and work toward improving tracking.

Exercise list right now is all PT based: resistance band training (opening knees, fondas, wall sits, side stepping), exercise ball bridges, single leg presses, barbell squats, split squats (with weight), kick backs. All with the goal of building the glutes and thighs to support the hip bones better.

I’ve just kept adding juggling balls. Currently working on juggling 5. Once you get a pattern, it’s not really doing anything to just keep doing the pattern.

  7. I’m looking to up my game in any way. I’ve started eating better and working out again(took a few years off because I’m undisciplined), stretching before bed, juggling…

Right now I’m doing a full body workout with only 2 sets per exercise that I’ll eventually split up into  a few different workouts when I feel I’ve plateaued. So far these make me feel really good. Less knee pain and I feel stronger on the ice.

    im doing

upper body: Dips, pull-ups, captains chair ab work, dumbbell press, bent over rows, shoulder press

lower body: single leg lunge, side lunge, squat, glute bridges, wall sits, resistance band exercises from a physiotherapist

Curious what you are doing for workouts?

Yeah, for me sizing down and stiffer was so good for me with leg pads.  Pretty sure I dropped a size in my chestie too like 2 or 3 ago.  My pants have gone up a size but the internal belt on SLR pants was a huge bonus for me as a smaller guy.  Definitely went from 26 to 25 with my Warrior sticks which was a huge improvement as well.

The thing about adding stiffness or rigidity to custom Vaughn gear is that it adds so much weight and that made playing in it dreadful.

Vaughn to Bauer Mach was exactly the evolution I needed....minus the glove wrist strap drama.  Ugh.  Custom Shadow here I come.

What’s the glove wrist strap drama?

  9. Just curious what you all use? I currently have some warrior ritual X. it seems to be flat faced and about 10-11 inches wide per leg. I believe NHL regulation is now 9 inches wide and i think they have to do barrell shaped vs flat faced but i might be wrong about that.

Curious what everyone else is using and which pants are the most illegal? I remember hearing some NHL goalies wearing 2 pair of pants back in the day.  pair that fit them and another pair that was just massive.

Anyone have any tips for creating max coverage with their pants?

  10. Bought a pro stock Bauer stick with a trigger grip. Now I cut it into all my sticks. Just trace the pattern and use a little manual saw I got at a hardware store.

Everyone needs a trigger grip. I tried a game recently without a trigger grip and I felt lost. It’s so awkward to hold.

  11. Normally I can shake off a bad game but I’m ready to snap right now.

up 5-1 going into the third and then the other team scored 8 goals. 7 of them were in the blue paint or right in front of the net and the 8th was a breakaway for a 9-8 regulation loss.

I know these fall on my team for being non existent in the defensive end in the third but holy fuck. Pulling the puck out of my net 8 times in one period while 2 guys on the other team celebrate in front of me has me losing it.

I snapped one of my sticks on the boards, it’s like 3 hours later and I can’t calm down.

    So… any tips?

  12. Hey fellow goalies. So I’ve always loved the position. Played a lot of ball hockey growing up and only switched to ice about 2.5 years ago. I gave myself a crash course by playing probably 300 games and shinny over the past 2.5 years, learning to juggle, getting sense arena, binging in goal magazine as well as getting a goalie coach. I’ve had people tell me I look like I’ve played my whole life which is nice…but…

my mental health is terrible right now. I don’t have confidence, I feel like I’m letting my team down and things seem to be spiraling. I often think about quitting. I’m already signed up for winter season which is like 35 games but my summer season has been bad enough that I don’t want to play winter.

playoff are like 2 weeks away and I want to give it my all but idk what to do. I’d hate to make the wrong decision and have to find another team again but i feel burnt out and feel like im wasting my teams time.

I’ve taken little breaks since this started about 6 months ago. Took a month off but the passion hasn’t come back.  I’ve been having more fun at no pressure shinnys.

buying new gear seemed like a good idea and I love the gear but it didn’t help bring the passion back.

Maybe im just venting but has anyone else gone through this?  Any advice on what I should do?
im just a beer league goalie but I find the pressure to be too much right now. It’s not like im playing for a job. There’s no backup ready to take my place.  Just feels like too much pressure sometimes being the guy who has to stop the puck since everyone drove to the arena to watch me let in a Couple muffins and lose us the game.

thanks for reading if you got this far.
