So Maybe I emailed the wrong manufacturer...but I got a quote for that Potvin/Harrison custom mold from PS and it wasn't even in the same ballpark as the Shark.  To the tune of +$1,700 more than the Shark.  Did I miss something?  Seems like I have my decision made I guess.

That's for an actual mask made by Harrison to your specs I believe. The Protechsport is not that.

Time for a new cage on my Protechsport mask.... Anyone know if any off-the-shelf cages fit, or do I need to get in touch with Michel to have him send me one?

    Thanks in advance!

In most cases I don't think there's an off-the-shelf cage that will fit, so probably best to contact Michel. His cage prices are pretty low too, only $90CAD I believe which is the cheapest I've seen for a new cage.

I've heard of and seen some guys wearing the cage so close it seems unwise and have been warned by their trainers/coaches, and this was in the pros. I had the mask shipped from Toronto to Gatineau. Spending on back and forth shipping like that doesn't fancy me. Had it been local, that would be a different story.

I'm trying to get a hold of Tony at Sportmask but he's not easy to track down.

I don't know if Tony is still at Sportmask. From what I've seen on social media, he's no longer involved there since the merger (or sale) with OTNY/GoalieParts.

I believe a large would be too loose on the cheeks and temples.

How big is your nose (if you don't mind my asking)? I have an Eddy mask (GTII I think, size large) and I replaced the chin cup with one from Sportmask because I prefer feeling closer to the cage to improve peripheral sightlines. My nose gets close but doesn't touch (I have a long nose), though the mask is too wide so I had to add in extra cheek padding. Maybe see how a larger size fits you as well? I have heard of people using masks that have the cage in contact with the nose, so I don't think it's a huge deal other than you might get a nosebleed if you take a hard enough shot to that spot of the cage.

Last Fall I decided to sip the Kool-aid and try the Factory Mad gloves by getting these from the swap:

They are now for sale to someone that has interest in trying something from this great manufacturer as I was so impressed I ordered this set which came in a couple weeks ago.

Is there a noticeable difference in mobility (or anything else) between the split and one-piece gloves? Obviously you probably haven't had much time in them, just curious if there's anything obviously different between them.

For those who have recently been in contact with him, has he provided his most up to date waiting period?

When I placed my order about a month ago, he said 35-38 weeks, partially because he’s been getting a couple of orders per week.

I contacted him.  He uses Otny cages.  I decided to roll with that.

I've overlayed the Sportmask cheater cage in blue over the Otny cheater cage in silver.

Looks like the bars just to the outer side of your eyes are further to the side for the Otny.  Obviously the center bars are wider apart on the Otny.  However, I put up a couple of chopsticks where I suspect the Otny center bars will be and I didn't find it to be in the vision at all.

The lowest horizontal bar for the Otny looks lower as well, providing a less concentrated lower area.

If I don't like it, I'll just buy Sportmask cage and replace.  The Otny cage comes with stainless steel clips and screws, and neoprene washers....so it seems to be great quality.

OTNY and Sportmask are now one company, so maybe he could get access to them? Also, I'm not sure that any Sportmask cage would fit without drilling new holes or having some fit issues, though as we saw the current CCM cages (which look similar to some Protechsport cages) fit on the Sportmask Mage.

I haven't made my final decision yet if I'll go with a Sportmask cage or a standard one, I'm sure I'll enjoy the mask either way. I'm just waiting for him to receive my mold so that I can see what size window he can fit on their (I prefer as large as possible), then decide on the cage.

ccm cages also have 3 sizes. It would probably be worth finding out what size it is. The one I sent was a M/L.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I’ll have to send him the cage measurements.

    5 hours ago, OceanMon said:

Please let me know how that goes. I'd like to do the same. Do you know where he gets his cheater cages from?

I’m not sure where he gets his cages.

  9. 14 hours ago, conn6r said:

Yes, he is putting a ccm cage on my mask. I get it in august.

Thanks for the info. I might try to get him to fit a Sportmask cheater cage on it (I like the openings better) and I know that a CCM cage can fit on those (someone on here once showed that), so he could likely make it work.

I too have a 995 Simmons chesty that I’ve used for 7/8 years and have just recently started to get the odd ball stingers in random places. So far the unit has been great very mobile and protective. Only issues I had was the elastic holding the floaters to the body got stretched out and the floaters flopped around until my jersey was on to kind of hold them in place.

I just purchased a passau pro pack on sale for $400 and don’t think I could get a better unit for that price. I looked at the Simmons 1000 and honestly it looks just like the same 995 that I am wearing. I do not think they did to much to change it and I wanted to try something new.

Dont think you can go wrong with any independent smaller companies. To me it seems like the smaller guys offer cheaper or comparable prices to their bigger named counterparts. Why spend $500+ on a “pro” unit from Vaughn or ccm that doesn’t offer the same level of protection. Kind of a joke that you have to mod a unit right away so you are protected.

Totally agree with that. If you can support local and get an equal or better product for the price, why not?

A few people will pop in and say Passau or Brown, I would disagree.

    • For the Passau, every picture I've seen has shown the shoulder floaters sticking up at a weird angle - it looks like it would cause interference with the mask chin.
    14 hours ago, Sebx said:

It's just bad adjustment, it's not a problem when you take the time to adjust properly the shoulder floater. It's a very popular unit, don't let some pictures fool you.

I've only worn a gen 2 Passau unit (non-pro) since I'm relatively new to goaltending, and the shoulders at first did interfere with the mast, but with some breaking in and suspenders I've gotten used to it. As for protection, I don't have anything else to compare it to but it feels solid. I think one other benefit of the Passau is the price for the options they give you, only like $550 CAD and you can select arm size and body size independent of each other, but if you need the pro pack the price is then comparable to the Kenesky. I definitely like the look of the Kenesky so I'm keen to see the improvements they put into yours @Chenner29!

IIRC, there was a government mandated shutdown until April 13th in Canada.  He probably caught up on a few orders during that time.

The shutdowns in Canada are by province, just like in the US how they are by state, and Quebec has been the hardest hit of all so I think they will be shut down for awhile. The shutdowns started in the second last week of March, just a few days after the NHL shutdown, so I'd agree that he probably has a lot more time to make masks now.

Very excited to show this off. Coveted mask painted by Erich - Resurection Custom Painting in Oshawa. I gave him a mock up of what I wanted and he ran with it and killed it. Can’t wait to get back on the ice one of these days. May have to wear old mask during warm ups though 😂

Awesome mask. I'm a big SW fanboy so seeing desig like that made my day :D Also agreed with ZeroGravitas - backplate looks sick!

    Yeah I dunno lol

That is really odd; did you message the seller? Maybe it was originally going to be a senior level line, or they made them for the April Fools? Although the latter would be a lot of work for little publicity...

  15. Sportmask just launched a .ca domain with no mention of custom (still on their .com website) but they now include the option of getting an EcoProFoam kit installed from the factory in a new mask or you can order the kit on it's own (they're owned by Goalieparts I believe). This seems like a nice option for people who prefer Sportmask over OTNY mask but still want the improved foam.

I'm 38 and to quote my acupuncture dude, I have the body of a 45-50 year old.  Extra cushion for my knees.  Hoping to limit the impact.  Testing mostly for now to see if they help with impact on my knees.

I may upgrade my knee pads as well later this year to the newer X2 Pro

I've thought about using the Poron knee pads for the same purpose, although in my case to prevent my knees from accelerated aging, so let us know how it works out. I remember there was a pro goalie (I think in the AHL) who used them under his knee pads years ago when they were still the G-Form brand.

One thing overlooked with your Bauer comments...

Factory Mad won’t slide as well or have hard rebounds. I’m not saying one is better than the other, but there is a method to Bauer’s madness that cant be overlooked when explaining why they went with exotic new materials

The one piece sliding surface on the FM Protos may also help with power transfer and thus slide easier, though it may only be a marginal difference that would be much improved with a material like Primo.

@Punisher GoalieNice lid!!! Love mine so far and couldn’t agree more re Ron and team.

@TitanGYou definitely can but that bumps you to “full custom” territory (i.e. any shell mod). I’m sure it’s a range from stock price but Ron could tell you pretty quick I’m sure.

Thanks! I know things have changed a lot at Coveted over the last couple of years so was just wondering whether things were still available. I'll of course contact Ron if I want to go with Coveted.
