TGN I just realized I gave you a poor response to your question. The reason he wants to back to a 961 type mask is that it allows him to move his head around more frealy and with a slightly better range of motion than his current Protechsport which looks very similar to a CCM mask

Very nice both the model and Matt finish - my son has been wanting to go back to a Bauer type mask will be taking a serious look during spring break at possibly ordering one like this !

My son has two pairs - moving out of a large into and XL shortly best pants he has ever had!

Looks like I'm all set to stop by his shop on Sunday for a fitting!
I'm pretty excited. I've been drooling over Protechsport masks since I was a kid (whether I knew it or not). I wanted to spring for one back in 2011, but my old mask (an Olie) got absolutely demolished, and I couldn't wait for a Protechsport. So I bought a Hackva instead. But I always wanted a Protechsport, and since I started visiting goalie boards like this one and the GSBB, I've become all too aware that a craftsman like Michel won't go on making masks for ever, and that his masks are (relatively) custom to each buyer, based on the shape/sizing. So I feel like this is my chance to make an investment in my own long-term gear happiness.
Stackem how did it go with Michelle - did you pull the trigger on a mask?
Hope you enjoyed Montreal!

I forgot to add that the shot he received was a wrist shot not a slap shot from Weber it seemed relatively innofensive - imagine him getting hit by one of Weber's slap shots?
My son got 2/3 shots to his Protechsport this weekend - he doesn't play in the NHL so they where far from being anywhere near as hard as a pros shot, but nothing, and on top of that his still use his head to make a save if he can't get a glove or blocker to it first!
If I played at an elite level I would certainly be wearing the best head protection possible!
-
Incredible that whether his mask is il fitted or just plain cheap that he doesn't work on getting a better quality/proper fitting mask. I remember 1-2 years ago that his Bauer mask had chipped on his forehead looks like he wears a stock Bauer?.

Stackem glad to hear he is able to see you - I hope your are going with the full Kevlar, don't forget your usd is worth about 25% more thean the Canadian peso!

I'm going to be in Montréal this weekend, and I was debating stopping by Michel's shop to get fitted molded for a Protechsport. I've always wanted one, and who knows how long Michel will be making them. It's one of those things that I would absolutely kick myself over if I were to lose my chance to have one.
I was just in the middle of emailing him about stopping by, but I wanted to come here first and see what the protocol was. Does he work weekends? Does he create molds for customers, or is that something you're supposed to handle yourself? I just don't want to be inconsiderate and write him an email asking if I can come by and have him do a mold if that's not how things work, etc.
Please let me know, thanks!
Stackem I responded on your Montreal visit thread!

Sorry was not trying to be rude - but the goalie shop has a good instructional on how to properly use them! When we got his pads I was not sure on how to use the system, they have the best explanation out there that I could find - perfect fit!
-
Well did you guys use them properly my son wears size 10 Bauer Reactor skates and he has no issues?
You are supposed to crisscross them twice around the bottom of the skates and then bring them over the top to close the Velcro together!
I don't believe his are intermediate smart straps 34 + 2 pads
-
TGN thanks for the feedback but he know has the Brians smart strap
-
My son used a set last year - and while they are great I found that due to their design they scratched the top of the toe caps of his skates. I ended up having to tape them with clear tape so as to avoid the issue.

CCM one is awful, don't touch it. I can't believe that thing is over $100 it feels so cheap.
Bauer one is good, there is an updated one coming out (it'll be blue), and Bauer one is made of 37.5 material which means it stays a bit dryer while playing.
I used the Verbero player one, it runs hot so don't wear a shirt underneath it. But the player one wasn't long sleeve and that is why I did it. They also run very long, so the bottom of mine was bunched up when I wore it.
Unequal has a nice one out, but I haven't gotten a chance to see it in person.
Hills while I am not a CCM affictionato I have to say that the quality of this product In our experience has been very good! I bought one for my son about 18 months + ago and it's still in perfect shape!, used on average 5 times a week and washed nearly as often I will however hold back on the quality of the protection it provides vs the padding used by other companies as we have no other references.
Also when I bought the undergarment I found that it had the padding in the proper places vs some of the alternative products!

CCM has a glue or coating they are putting on the tips of the pro Elastic straps
TGN there is no glue - the straps look like that once cut, I recently got my sons mask spruced up at Griffe and the straps needed changing and these where installed. Supposedly these do not fray nor do they change color product looks great vs the old straps that changed color and ripped on the bottom straps ( see picture just above on the MA Fleury mask )
-
Same holder - made for player blades 3mm in width and if I am not mistaken where developed by Step steel!
The only difference between the player/ goalie holder is that an insert is removed and or inserted when the holders are molded to allow for the toe strap to pass. ( that is the little triangle seen under the toe area )
I don't know how you can say their different? As per Freely if you can elaborate?

So I went to pick up a spare set of Step blades for my son at lunch at my local hockey shop - and what do I see a set of 1 piece True goalie skates! The clerk subsequently showed me that he also had a two piece and a player demo skate! I also found out that they have been selling them for a couple of months know, they also have the scanning kit - which if you are gonna spend this king of money you might as well make sure your local shop has one!
However I must say that all their skates are heavier than the competition - the one piece weighing a ton! Also my main concern is their 2 piece cowling ( which as we all know is a player cowling ) I have attached the following pictures that highlight my other concern on their 2 piece unit the height of the skate!!
Picture # 1 True 1 piece vs 2 piece about 1/2 inch in height difference!
Picture # 2 CCM/Bauer/True: CCM being the lowest of the 3 then Bauer then True, I would estimate about 1/4 os an inch from CCM to Bauer + another 1/4 inch to the True
Picture # 3 a True player skate and goalie 2 piece same cowling height etc............
So next time my son will need a new pair of skates I will certainly consider these - but unless your foot looks like that of Daffy duck there are certainly other options!
One last comment - I am surprised that goalie skate cowlings are not being regulated by the league ( regarding height )- I know if I was CCM/Bauer I would certainly be all over this??

The foam he uses is like a babies bottom

OTNY Mask (masks made by Ron Stefaniuk from Coveted Masks) has a pre-cut Maltese foam option, though it costs about $100 USD more than with normal foam.
