  1. Yeah so after a few experiments, I wear G-Forms, then PAWs (stock height cushioning), then put a sock over that and a bit of clear tape. My knees feel great.

The cushion cells on G-Forms feel like hard plastic when it's cold, but your body heat warms them up and it provides a really perfect blend of support and softness. Also I can just throw them in the wash after a game or two, I love them and I recommend them.

  2. It's probably just for Canada, but Tydan just sent an email about Pro Stock Blades for sale.

$40 for any available, Goalie blades are available it seems like. Profiling seems to be extra.

Email info@tydanblades.com with the subject of Pro Stock Purchase Inquiry as the headline with what you are looking for.

My quickest guess is that the elastic knee lock and the RRC strap below the knee were both still new and had enough strength in the elastic to make you feel like the fit was dialed in, when it actually was not

Now that they're broken in and worn down a bit, the elastics aren't as tight so they don't support you as much

I'd let out the toe ties a little more (seriously, get those things to the same length - you're triggering my OCD), loosen up the boot strap, and move the knee block velcro down to the calf.  This will let your knee, shin, and skate separate from the pad when you're down, and maybe we can get you to hit a little more centered on the knee block

Kinda like this, obviously Vokoun isn't exactly in a textbook butterfly but the image accomplishes what I'm trying to illustrate.  Your knee and boot are going to take a position further back in the pad (in yellow) which should allow your knee to slide up the pad a little when you drop.  Elastics in the knee and calf should hold pad in place well enough when you're cruisin around the crease.  Don't go to an bungee skate cord toe tie IMO, it's going to pull your toe into the toe box

I agree with everything that you've said, but just to add my experience. When I strap my knee block velcro down to my calf, it actually pushes my pads up. But experiment like Chenner has said, because YMMV.

Have you ever seen the story of the guy who bought a custom Lefevre kit and realized after playing with it that it was finally too tall for him ?

The dude went to his local shoe-maker/cobbler and asked him to cut the pads to be shorter ... Man I gotta find these photos again. The job was awful !!!

My local repair shop is selling pro-stock Vaughns. They are beautiful, but the thigh-rise is like +3s. They offered free chop work if someone buys them. Now their work is impeccable and I'm sure it would come out better than these, but the thought of cutting pads like that makes me cringe.

Reminds me of a guy who cut his G4 pads with a saw in between games during a tournament.

Not a single thing has gone wrong on it so far (knock on wood). I wish I had the upgraded model but as far as I know this is the rock bottom automatic model not the LL Bean, Sport, H6, or LTD. No complaints here though especially considering recent gas prices lol

Having worked on Subarus and having owned a couple, please make sure you get that timing belt serviced at the correct intervals.

The 4-speed auto seems to be a weak spot too, make sure to check the fluid level (tell tale sign is if it shifts real hard, or if your auto stalls intermittently) and do a flush if it hasn't been done in awhile.

The seal on the frameless doors should be looked after too for leaks.

Otherwise, the car is very capable and going to last you a long while, I loved the wagon when I owned mine in the winter as it was super predictable in turns.

I'm curious how Warrior sizing compares to CCM (will Warrior 34 = CCM 34). I know that I need 34 in CCM, because my 33+1 CCM Premier II pro pads were too small.

Please try it in store, but when I had my CCM Premier Pro, the 34+2 were too big (I was landing below), but the 34+1.5  G4s that I tried for dozens of games were absolutely perfect. And now in my Brian's SubZero 34+1 which are perfect too in terms of sizing for the knee.

So I tried again without heat and actually had worse results.   However, doing more research, it seems the issue may be the fact that the VVivid film I purchased is vinyl (PVC) vs. polyurethane based. The PVC is less malleable and generally less durable than the poly based film. E.g. the 3m film is poly film.

So I have some Vvivd poly film and a third party film being shipped now, given 3m is out of stock everywhere.  I'll update when I get it on and test.

If you are in Canada, and can send me your dimension, I could send you some of the 3M if I have enough left on the roll.

    EDIT: for free that is

I got one of these during the holidays as a gift, I didn't really have a need for it until last night.

I had dinged my blades quite a bit before shutdown, and had forgotten to have it looked before my game which was last minute.

I watched the instructional video, it was a bit hard to use but it went ok. My big issue was when it chattered a bit sometimes and I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Also I had troubles when it got clogged with chaff because I forgot to tap it to clear on each pass. All in all it was ok, much better than any other repairs tools that I had to use, but I wouldn't use it to sharpen everywhere, just in the visually problematic spots as a band-aid. Good in a pinch.

Lots of companies (in all industries, not just hockey) would have changed the shape of the knee block to the point where these wouldn't have been backwards compatible [...]

I came to say this exactly. Kudos to them. Same deal with their glove liners too.

I will prob order a senior model of G6 once it lands.

I'd hate for you to get stuck with the PPF if it ends up not working for you because it won't come off or is damaging your pads.

I would welcome an excuse to get new pads lol.

I'll give it another college try once I can find some free time.

Really curious how you applied the PPF.  I have not had any issues except the initial rubbing sensation.  Fixed this by tightening both my knee block velcro and calf wedge strap.

    Maybe comparing notes would help...

    • Did you have any exposed edges/corners on the flat surface of the pad after applying?
      • I curved mine up and around to follow the line of jenpro.  No exposed corners or edges that would directly contact the ice.
    • How long did you wait between application and skate?
      • I waited 24 hrs
    • FWIW I did not use a heat gun.

    - I tucked mine up into the fold and curved mine up too.

    - Waited a bit more than 24 hours

    - I did use a heat gun.

I'll try again in the new year. I usually use a silicone spray on my sliding surface so maybe that hinders the adhesion as well, is there a good way to prep the surface you think? Maybe a wipe with alcohol?

But I still feel that the feeling of the rub would bother me when walking/standing upright to rest. I wonder if the UHMW tape would be better or are they the same thing as the 3M PPF?

  13. So a few things since:

It is from what I understand XFP -> Pro -> Pro Carbon. And XFP would not have been enough for my level of play

    - I've been able to get a used VE8 Pro, and it fits me much better than my Passau, and I feel much more mobile and able to see around much better

    - I am looking into a padded shirt, but I will try a game in the new year first without one to see. I also have close access to a shop that could stitch on some extra padding if I feel the need.

  14. So a bit of a disaster last night taking it out for the first time.

    The Good

It slides oh so incredibly well. I overslid quite a few times in the beginning before the snow started forming, and even then it slid well, better than anything else I've worn.

    The Bad

Like someone said before, they like to grab onto each other, it wasn't fun walking to the ice, and every time I was standing upright to rest, I had to be extra cognizant of where my knees were.

During one scramble, they caught each other and I found out afterwards that one side had pulled off the other as my legpads rubbed together.

Even if it was somehow perma-attached to my pads, I don't know if I would like it because of the feeling of them grabbing onto each other. I'll have to try it again another time.

  15. I get to try this on my pads tonight and once more on Wednesday. I'm pretty excited as none of the pads that I've had slid particularly well.

It was fairly easy to do, I was pretty close to the edges using a sharp razor blade. I did a quick pass over the surface with my heat gun on the lowest setting but I don't think that helped or hurt honestly. If it comes off during the game tonight, then I will try cleaning the surface and reapplying for Wednesday.

  16. @seagoal I was looking at the SLR2 as a comparison to the Velocity you mentioned and I like the look of the clavicle protection better than the velocity but it looks like it doesn't come with a forearm foam like the Velocity https://www.sportwheels.ca/vaughn-ventus-slr2-padded-goalie-compression-shirt.html

You did say that you only used the bicep protection on the velocity shirt, would you say that the forearm was ok/decent on the VE8 Pro Chest?
