  1. I was finally able to take these out on the ice last night, and the adjustment from my Eflex 6 set was surprisingly easy. Both sets are 33 + 1.5, both have weave on the sliding surface, and both are the stiffest internals that each pad offers, although obviously the Px3s have a much stiffer thigh rise and are stiffer overall.

I didn't have any issues with mobility or pad interference, strapping system felt good, rotation was good, etc.

Butterfly slides during the flow of play and going post to post was better on the Px3s. Overall it's just a stiffer and more solid platform upon which to move and play. The only aspect that I really noticed was different and that I'll need to work on is 5 hole coverage. The curve of the CCMs lets you get a little lazy, whereas with the Trues you need to be conscious of keeping your knees together and maintaining a good flare due to the straighter and stiffer thigh rise.

For sizing comparison, my knees do land a little higher on the block of the Trues despite them both being a 33 and despite the flatter boot on the Trues.

Overall I was impressed, they felt great 👍

Some Bobrovsky specs from a True video posted to their Instagram.

    Bobrovsky.thumb.png.8d3081b5913339e937b03f32c55e2371.png

    Looks like it reads:

    "Bobrovsky Pad - Catalyst (33-??) Tight(?) ..."
"Angle Options Single Break Core No Break Outer ..." Can't tell if it says Soft or Stiff
"Knee Zone Soft Foam (No Outer Knee Wrap)"
    "Boot Flex (Core) Flex"
"Leg Strap Elastic Strap 2" Below Knee Fixed Single"
    "Boot Strap No Strap"

Pretty sure that says "stiff" with regards to the core.

Yup, and to me it looks like 33 - 2.5

Also, since he's currently wearing px4, and prior to that had 20.2's, was this maybe just a set for him to test?

Edit #2 - just saw it says Janvier 2024, which for you Americans means January. No translation required for 2024.

Everyone of us have ups and downs in his game ( I got lit by 13! goals yesterday, but who cares today). Just my opinion, but I found this 👆 as the main problem.  Do not quit now. Take some time off and when you are ready to return, play where you enjoy it and like it. BLG or pick-up, it doesn´t matter, if you like the play. But when you don´t, change the scenery and move away quickly from this kind of "teams".

Completely agree with this as well. I'm very fortunate to have been playing with the same core group on my team for approx 15 years and they're all great guys. Makes all the difference in the world.

They are fairly similar and different at the same time depending on how you specd the build on the trues. But stock vs custom should be vastly different than my custom vs custom build. Now I'll have to compare them vs my new ef6's when they come in. 😅

I went with single break core - no break outer roll - stiff. Regular boot angle, flex boot. They're definitely a lot stiffer than the ccm's but I was pleasantly surprised by how much flex there still is internally in the single break despite the no break outer roll option. And the boot is still nice and soft.

Ok thanks. Btw how’s the Axis XF glove? How would it compare to a True Catalyst PX3 580 for example?

I'm really liking it, and am using it full time now. It's very different than a 580 though. I had an Eflex 6 580 and I loved the large pocket and how it sucked up pucks, but it felt big and cumbersome to me and I couldn't completely get used to it so I sold it. Right now I have the True L20.2 590 and the Axis XF (which is an evolution of the 590). They're very similar in break angle and pocket shape, but the Axis has the new CCM backhand and index and pinky finger loops and crossform strap. The break is also more of a crease as opposed to the traditional popsicle stick 2 edged break, and it takes some care to break it in properly. Overall I think it's awesome. Really comfortable, and in general I would call the Axis XF "softer" than the True. It just catches really well.

More broadly, this glove is a massive improvement over the Eflex 6 581 (which I owned) and the Axis 2 591, which were sort of 1st gen versions of this new CCM glove design. As an example, the thumb angle has been fixed so you get less pop outs, and the internals feel much better. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good and I'll be curious to see how it's received once more people start using them.

Don’t know where to post this but I am considering ordering an Axis XF Pro Custom set when it drops. I currently own a set of True Catalyst 7x3 pads, and I love them, but I am looking for something a little lighter. I looked at a set of CCM Eflex 6 pads in store and they seem pretty light but I don’t like how soft they are and how they sit on the skate. I was also looking at the new Bauer Shadow set but it seems like it would be too heavy. Any suggestions on what I should get or any new specs that aren’t public?

Gonna be honest, the weight differences in pads these days really are negligible. Generally a pro level pad (like the eflex 6) will probably be lighter than an intermediate or senior level pad (like a 7X3) just due to different materials being used. But between pro level pads the weight differences are so minor that it really shouldn’t be something that you focus on. Just get pads that you like the feel of/how they play.

That being said, if you really care, generally Warrior makes the lightest gear, followed by the hyperlite line by Bauer.

I would agree with this. I've been using my eflex 6 set all year and just got a set of px3's and I honestly can't tell which pair is lighter. They're nearly identical.

So at this point I think it come down to fit and feel and what works best with your game.

But yeah I'm looking forward to checking out the axis xf pads as well.

I have the tf7 skates so it's fiberglass as opposed to carbon fiber but mine are getting pretty beat up from the posts along the outside of the boot and on the back. I have only been using them for 15 games or so but they look much worse then my previous bauer and ccm pairs that I wore for years. Do you have any pics of your mod? I was thinking of adding the ppf around the whole boot but thought it may be difficult to get good application around the curvature of the skate. I thought about putting a strip along the side as well as the back but worry about it peeling off from wear from pad rotation.

You can see in my pic, especially near the ankle, the outline of the ppf strip. It's very minimal in height but runs the length of the skate. You don't have to wrap the whole skate, just in the spots where it wears. All the scuffs are on the ppf material, and I'm probably due for a new strip. No issues with it peeling away and you can hardly even see it. Easy to do.

  8. I finally got to take this out for a spin tonight and it may actually be an incredible glove. The pocket is great, fit is fantastic, and it funnels pucks. Pocket presence and where it sits in space really matches my natural hand position. It's still early, but my initial impressions are super positive.

  9. Some interesting general observations re: True production times - currently the customizer shows a wait time of only 5-7 weeks, and both Goal tec in Saskatchewan and United Sport & Cycle in Edmonton have received a boat load of domestic True sets (Hzrdus & Px3). So it seems either their supply chain issues have been addressed or there's just been a dip in demand. At any rate, bodes well for anyone wanting to purchase or order.

What were they asking for those skate protectors on instagram ? I seen them and was wondering about them. Thanks

I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was a minimum $100 USD? If anyone else remembers and I'm way off, please correct me.

I'd go with the PPF film, personally, I've been using small bits of it on high wear spots on my HL2 pads (thighrise corners and boot binding area) and it works like a charm - zero wear.

The shot blockers look a little chunky. I think they're made of Kydex so they should be pretty lightweight...

Yup, I do that as well on my eflex 6 pads and it works great. I also had a tiny cut on my glove so I just sealed it up with a small piece of PPF.

I'm getting some scrapes on the carbon fibre sidewall from touching the post, I saw this product https://www.instagram.com/theskateprotector/?hl=en which would address the exact issue, but it's also pretty expensive and looks like overkill. So I'm wondering if I should just put down some PPF film every month or if I should get something like https://www.amazon.ca/Plastics-2000-KYDEX-Sheet-0-080/dp/B077S5N6TP and place it on top.

I saw https://www.binnieshockey.com/shop-hockey-accessories/custom-ultra-shot-blockers from another thread I could cut just the bottom to make it fit the area that I want, but I don't think I can just buy them from the looks of it, I think they want a drop off of the skate which would not work and also I'm in Canada. Would someone be able to facilitate a US purchase?

I had this same problem, looked at that same instagram post, then saw the price and instantly crossed that off the list, haha. I went with ppf tape and it's done the trick very nicely. You can't even see it since it looks like the glossy finish of the skate. I'd say give it a try.

Goodbye Hockey. ......... I am playing my final game on Friday, March 29.

For years my body has been complaining. This time I have listened.

It has been a grand run, 75-80 games per year with my 55+ team and more recently we've morphed into a 70+ squad.

Of course I'll miss it, over 65 years of being a goalie. But following hip, knee and shoulder surgeries the arthritis has won !@#$%^&*. So at age 74 I'm hanging them up. I won't be selling any gear as my Granddaughter is following the Family Curse and is now a 'tender.

It is my plan to drop in every once in a while on this site and take the temperature. But probably won't have much to offer, as if I ever have.

    Cheers y'all

Yours is already better than the one I tried! Tee closure especially is much better

The proof will be in actually using it, but if this glove turns out to be bad it won't be because it won't close or can't be worked in properly! Haha.

Now that's a nice looking glove. Awesome! Let us know how the break-in process goes. Which methods do you try?

It definitely has potential and is an improvement over the previous model!

Methods are pretty straightforward. Wrapped closed with a ball in the pocket and butt end in the palm, and tied further down towards the wrist to try and properly shape the closure near the bottom of the palm, and then spread open with a butt end. (The end of that sentence just sounds wrong).

Next will be baking it, and then tying it shut again. Rinse and repeat!

Strictly trying on. The flat fingers do worry me a little but it's on par with bauer off the shelf

Glove has arrived early! Here's some pics right out of the box. First impressions are that it is WAY more comfortable than the original Axis 2 591 and the ef6 581. No issue getting my hand in, and that crazy thumb angle is gone. The internals are much softer and feels really nice. Finger loops are also greatly improved from a comfort and fit standpoint. Crossform strapping is as you'd expect, really nice fit. The palm "bump" has been reduced and doesn't feel awkward. The glove backside is loose and doesn't restrict closure.

Not impossible to close, but absolutely needs to be baked, worked in, and properly shaped. I've got some work to do.

Final question...is this the pro or senior version? This is a warranty claim and I stipulated I wanted the Axis XF Pro, but that was back in the fall. Have they dropped "Pro"? Or did I I get stuck with the senior model?

I'm of the opinion that Jonathan Quick would make a great goalie coach by virtue of his ability to read plays/situations; I think he'd be able to coach/foster good habits (watch how much he shoulder checks and how well he keeps vision on the puck in any situation sometime).

The current crop of Russian goalies is proving to be outside the current standard. They still play within the bounds, but the creativity and personality is there. There are numerous clips of Askarov wandering to play the puck/make plays as more than a pylon and Kochetkov plays with a ton of fire.

Hellebuyck is not a standard goalie either. The best way I can describe his game is, "that guy is a professional."

The orthodox is definitely coming from how the game is played, it's much more studied and optimized compared to how it was at any point in the past.

Anyway, plain answer: Irbe, one of my favorites.

Hellebuyck gave a great interview in October on "After Hours" which for all the non Canadian folks is a post Hockey Night In Canada interview segment after the late game. It's one of the better goalie interviews I've seen in terms of honesty and non BS answers, and in particular he talks about his style and how he plays - at one point even just candidly stating there's not way he can do the splits and how his style is constructed in a way that doesn't require it. Professional is a great way to describe it.
