I use this one and have for years. One gentle pass before each game. I don’t get my skates sharpened often, maybe once every few months give or take. Immediately after sharpening I won’t use this but maybe after my third game I’ll start using it again. Works good for me. I have Graf 750 Goaler Pros sharpened at 1/2”.- 1

It’s always fun to watch the old way to play, especially when it’s done well. Of course, most of these techniques are no longer able to be successfully applied with how the game at the highest level is played today.
Another note, I noticed many of the former goalies who were coaching in this video not articulating exactly what they meant. Numerous times they said line up with the man, not the puck. Of course, we know it’s the other way around. Also, kids take what adults say literally. So saying never or always is dangerous, because it’s at odds with what kids will discover in their experience. Sometimes is more accurate.

@Fullright Can you post pictures of your pads when convenient? I only ever saw them from the back in your GoPro videos.

Do you have other places to play or other leagues at the same place to play? If so, you could always take a break from this league and focus on those leagues. Then come back to it when you think you’re ready. Or maybe skate out in this league and play goalie in others.

Only one inch narrower.
Just Sayin'
Modern pads are much taller and boxier though. So they look drastically different.
You know many pads were wider than the 12” limit back then since the only method to check was to challenge in game. And no one ever did that because they knew full well their own goalie was also wearing illegal equipment. So in many cases it was more than an inch wider than they are now. We’ve all heard about Richter supposedly wearing pads that were 15” wide at the boot break. Plus right before the downsizing of equipment, pads were super tall for some goalies. Garth Snow was said to be using 44” tall pads. That’s insane.

On TNT last night Anson Carter said goaltending is the weakest position in the league right now. He said this during a highlight package of the game between St. Louis and Arizona that ended 6-5. The highlights clearly showed little to no defense being played. Meanwhile, the game they were covering, Dallas and Vegas, was tied at one. Keep in mind Adin Hill came from the Arizona organization and was not highly regarded because of it. Also Vegas plays decent defense.
Am I wrong thinking that he is incorrect? There must be some advanced metrics that can show one way or another how good or bad goalies are performing. I would argue that modern goalies see more high quality chances than in most eras. Also I’d argue that offense is more dangerous than ever.
I would guess any NHL goalie from today dropped into any previous era would do quite well. Meanwhile, other era goalies dropped into today’s game would struggle.
Thoughts?

Honestly, just because these pads have elements of a traditional pad, doesn’t mean they can’t be used for modern-style play. They wouldn't replicate the exact performance of the most modern pads, but they could be used effectively for modern moves. Unless you ordered them without them, these pads do come with landing gear. They also should have jenpro (or whatever synthetic leather is used) on the inner surface (sliding area) of the pad. You would just have to use slack on your toe-ties as you would on any modern pads.
Ordering from Brown also allows you to customize features on the equipment. I’m pretty sure you can combine features of one model with that of another.- 2

Based on the title, I honestly thought this was going to be a thread about 1990s goalies or maybe the best 1990s sitcom. Needless to say I am disappointed.

Mike Smith was a starter for most of his career and posted pretty average numbers for a NHL starting goalie. Especially when playing for the Coyotes for years.
Dude was a headcase and prone to some bad fucking goals. But he was a legit goalie.
Yeah, I’m not saying he was bad. I’m saying he’s not an elite goalie and paired with poor defensive zone play, it was never going to work. So after the fact when fans and pundits blame Smith instead of the organization for setting up the team to fail seems delusional at best.

Really it sounds like you are saying they are backups, which illustrates that management doesn’t know how to identify elite goaltenders. This is not a new problem. Both organizations inexplicably thought Campbell was their guy. He actually looks like a beer league goalie when he plays. Would anyone ever think that Mike Smith or Mikko Koskinen were anything more than good or average backup goalies? Samsonov and Skinner might actually be good. I don’t know because they play on teams who are clueless defensively. It should not be lost on anyone that Adin Hill was languishing on two bad teams before going to the Vegas organization. They were forced to use him as their fourth option due to injuries. Turns out he’s actually pretty good when playing on a team that’s not incompetent. Now he’s their guy and it’s going quite well.

Ah yes, Schadenfreude.
The Oilers and Leafs are similar in that they either drafted or signed highly skilled goal-scorers and payed them huge contracts. Due to the salary cap, they can’t fill the rest of their roster with comparable players. Neither organization seems to be able to draft an elite goaltender. And the goaltenders they’ve had haven’t been helped by the poor defensive zone play by their players. Commitment to defense is not a core principle of either team. So both teams are set up to fail in the playoffs. It’s just surprising it’s happening to the Oilers now, during the season.- 2

Honestly, even if he doesn’t know specs, at least be more interesting when speaking. It’s amazing how many hockey players act like they don’t want to be there when they are talking on camera. I’ve grown to expect it from Canadians and Americans. Now the Europeans, too?

Would have been nice if he said something more than they are nice and simple. No mention of any specs or features he prefers. Man, hockey culture has made even a foreign player (German) boring AF.
