  1. I feel like some of these coaches speak in word salads, just a bunch of fancy words in some sort of order that sounds important. Or is that just how Canadians talk?😎

    I'm not saying it's bad. I just think some coaches get a little too into character. Plus, say everything loud and forcefully! 

    The biggest thing I noticed was how big Demko was compared to Clark. Time and time again I'm reminded of how the goalie used to be the shortest guy out there and is now often the tallest guy out there. Clark = lowercase goalie; DEMKO = UPPERCASE GOALIE!

    Sure. Brown pants also have additional inner thigh bars that make getting the knees together harder. I took those out of my 2000 series pants and it alleviated the issue. There still is another inner thigh protector there so it’s safe. It’s something you might want to try. 

  4. @FIFTY-SIX are those Brown pants the 2100 series? I tried those years ago and found they were so bulky they prevented my knees from getting together in the butterfly. At the time I had pads with standard thigh rise. So the five hole was wide open. I switched to the 2000 series and had better luck.

Although, goalie equipment had gotten out of hand with how big it was pre 2004-05 lockout, the subsequent reductions of all gear, some pieces more than once, haven’t stopped people from complaining about goalie equipment size. The real difference now is the human under the gear is much bigger now than in yesteryear. 6’5” with long limbs will always look bigger than 5’8” with T-rex arms, regardless of how much gear you put on them. 
    I have various pieces of gear that are likely pre-lockout (2004-05) spec. My John Brown 2100 CA being chief among them. At 5’10” and 190lbs., not a single person has commented on my CA being big, oversized or illegal. I think most of this stuff is just perception. They can keep reducing goalie gear for the rest of time, plenty of hockey people will continue to complain about it being too big. But it’s always going to be the giant wearing it making the net look small.

    Rittich? It’s refreshing to see. But of course the starter’s rarely use the color from their team’s jersey. Usually the bench-riders and minor leaguers have colorful sets. The NCAA women also tend to have colorful sets.

    One of the problems with TV hockey coverage regarding goalies, the views of them are either from a 100 million miles away or right up in their face. Rarely do you get a good shot of full body from close up.

    When I lived in Toledo, I played here for a summer league. Oddly they didn't have a regular men’s league in the fall and spring. Instead they have 3 on 3 on a smaller surface rink. Weird. I played one week as a sub and said no thanks after that. I never got around to joining a league at the Tamoshanter in Sylvania, which is closer to Toledo.

    You can see Reddick's pads here too pretty well. Maybe they were white and just faded? They are unique to say the least.

  10. I had a doubleheader today, back to back with the same team. I made sure to drink more water than usual starting last night. Tried to eat light before the game. I also ate some almonds between games. I avoided Powerade. I drank the entire bottle of water during each game. 
    Results were pretty good. Felt less worn down and my performance didn’t suffer. I’ve done a few rounds of yoga recently, too. That seems to help stay looser. I’ll have to continue with these changes.

    I actually only really sip it, so I can't imagine it's doing as much damage as you're suggesting. When is Powerade supposed to be consumed? The Powerade I'm drinking at the moment is the zero sugar one.

    I'm referring to the equipment internals, the parts that are absorbing my sweat, not the parts making contact with the ice.

  12. I play in a Sunday league that has games ranging in start-times from Noon to 9:15pm (With 10:30pm being an occasional slot, too). Rare is the Sunday when someone isn't looking for a sub goalie. Also, last summer and perhaps at least part-time next season, I'll be asked to play on two teams. No matter what I do, I am a diminished version of myself in the second game. Whether the second game I play in is right after the first one, or the two games are separated by the entire day's games, I still can't seem to feel good in that second game.

    If there's a considerable spread between games, I only live 15 minutes away from the rink, so I can head home and air out my stuff, shower and eat something. I've also aired out my stuff in either the car or out in the sun if I stay at the rink. Most of my gear is pretty old (10-17 years old). Does older gear retain more moisture or take longer to dry out?

    What would be your recommendation on how I can feel better in my second game? For example, what foods should I eat or supplements should I take? I usually drink some Powerade after the first game and before the second game. I've eaten almonds between games or PBJ sandwiches. Nothing has been a great remedy. Thanks.

  13. So I found the right amount of slack needed, tied a knot and fed the laces through the loop. Worked well last night. These pads, Simmons 586 Hybrid, have enough torsional flex that this is not a problem. So I’m going with the zero-cost option right now. Also, the bolts are locked in place, so I’d need to drill them out to remove the tab, if I were to replace the Prolaces. Don’t want to deal with that right now. These pads are almost ten years old.     Uh oh, the straps on the bottom pad pictured no longer have elasticity. Actually the elastic inside the skate-lace covering is severed on either side of the anchor piece. I think one side was severed before and the other side went last night. 

    Should I use it like that or should I cut the skate lace and try and tie knots with the elastic on each anchor hole?

    FYI, I got these in June 2018.

  15. Couple of records set last night. In the broadcast they said Jared Bednar was the first coach to win an ECHL championship, AHL championship and NHL championship.

    And of course, Corey Perry is the first player to lose three straight Stanley Cup finals on three different teams. At least he can take solace in winning the cup in ‘07 with the Quacks 🦆.

  16. For me, it’s more about MacKinnon playing like a beer leaguer. That skate-as-fast-as-you-can-while-chopping-salad bullshit doesn’t work in the playoffs. He ends up skating right into pressure and turns the puck over. Competent defending can stop that. Same as McDavid for Edmonton. This isn’t a Tuesday in February when your opponent is Ottawa on a back to back. These are the best of the best teams and they get rest, travel the same as you and they’re game-planning for you and only you.

    Four of the five goals scored tonight were weird. We’ve all had the leg pad landing on the stick situation before like the winning goal. Unfortunate. We should ask why Palat was allowed to stand wide open in the low slot for a one-timer. Also, after scoring seven in game two, Colorado is having a hell of a time scoring goals that don’t look like pinball games. Shows me their forwards aren’t being dynamic. 
     

    As far as goaltending goes, it seems Canadian goalies aren’t elite anymore. The top dogs appear to be European. What the hell’s going on up there in canuck-land?

    So, it doesn’t protect adequately? Did the cup shift or was it a direct shot that you felt through the cup? Was it an impact to the cup or above it by the top piece?

    I haven’t experienced anything like that with my current cup and it’s probably more than 15 years old. I made some adjustments to the strapping so it won’t sag and we’ll see how it holds tonight when I play. 

  18. I have an old Eagle double cup, the gray one. The straps are all stretched out. The material covering the entire unit is damaged. It's all normal wear. The structural integrity of the cups and the plastic shield are good. But even with tying up all the straps to keep them tight, the cup tends to sag a bit during play.

    So I am considering a new cup. I am a John Brown fanboy, so I am inclined to go with his product. His double cup offering is the 2400. I have seen some comments on this site that this particular model is huge, some say overkill. I would like to know what anyone who has worn this exact model has to say about their experience with it. Also, how it may compare to the Eagle double cup I have. I do wear John Brown 2000 pants, so I would imagine they would be compatible with the cup. I also wear my chest and arm protector untucked. I am not really concerned about price, since I so rarely buy new equipment.
