However, you just can't beat the newer gear when it comes to trout fishing.

Nice catch (I'll see myself out)

  2. ...and seeing how @wonder got to show us his, I'll show you mine (to use the vernacular). This pic is so old that this is the cleaned up version..(push processing didn't help the cause). Also note the height of the net relative to me. Hard as it may be to believe, it hasn't gotten any better in the past 45 years

(Edit: should have added, circa '77/78)

I'm sure any piece of gear that's modern now a days would be so foreign to these guys back then. Just like this is foreign to us.

I wonder if someone would be laughed out of the room for showing up with today's gear

For reference, if you look at the first picture @Wonder35 posted of him in his winter jacket...err I mean chest protector, I grew up with the same thing. Right about the (first) time I got out of tending the new generation of CA's were just coming out (late '80s) - fairly similar to today's in size and coverage. I remember specifically seeing one in a sports shop and thinking two things:

    1. Man that is expensive (upwards of $300 - $350  when we were paying probably~$75 fore what Wonder was wearing

    2. There is absolutely no way that will catch on - too many forwards will complain it is too big and giving the goalie an unfair advantage.

Considering I was born in '88, pretty sure this commercial predates me. ;)

To that I say you are welcome for being introduced to not only superb cinematography but "Shakespearean" dialog. This should really be entered into the Canadian NFB archives.

And to answer the question that has plagued Canadians for 30+ years, I have performed exhaustive research (i.e. watched the commercial twice) and can verify that yes his name is "Albert Albert" (apparently the child of some pretty unimaginative parents).

(LOL, I guess it's the resolution or low light but) I don't think this is  really a cat, you just got one of those paint-by-number kits at Christmas, didn't you?

I"m obviously too lazy to actually do the research myself, but does that 41% mean full sets (pads/gloves)? Or just a piece?

Oooh - rookie mistake Coop! You don't ask how the data was obtained for a survey, you don't ask how the questions were posed or what qualifiers were used. You just accept the numbers as presented, otherwise the whole marketing schema we live by will have to answer too many questions...

Nothing irks me more than goalies that act tough and try and start shit and then back off for the Cavalry. Either step up or stay out.

Yeah, well I don’t think you are as tough as you sound. Why don’t you walk the walk? Take the better part of the day and pay the $150 round trip, hop on a ferry* and come on over her and we’ll talk – I’ll pencil you in for the 29th..

*Be sure to try the crab cakes in the Pacific Buffet – I hear they are absolutely to die for – ta

Picked this beauty up the other day.  Cage is thrashed so will get a new one.  But the helmet is in great shape.  Helmet is from the 1988 Canadian Olympic team.

Congrats! Pretty cool find and I love the retro look!

How is the padding inside the helmet - can it be replaced if it is rock-like? Yeah  that cage looks like someone took a hammer to it :( How hard will it be to get an replacement?

  10. I’ll add my comments to this – and try to be brief*. For the most part I share a lot of commonality with others who posted here. In brief:

    • Played from teen years to early 30s
    • Got married, bought a house had a kid on the way
    • All my gear needed to be replaced (my blocker was more duct tape than leather) and that was going to be expensive, and most importantly…
    • I was ready for a break – felt like I wasn’t playing well and wasn’t enjoying it

When I walked away from it, I never said I wouldn’t play again, I just didn’t really consider it – lots of other stuff to do.

Not-so-fast-forward 20+ years: a bunch of people I work with decide to get together to play a few street  (actually basketball court) hockey games. I hop in net and do pretty well (in my mind), and then bug bites again. At 54 I’m back on the ice using semi-modern gear to play old-school style. I start really researching the position, advantages/disadvantages of the new style and decide to modernize my game.

That was 8 years ago – I’m 62 now and chomping at the bit to get back on the ice. At my age I feel like every week I am not playing I’m losing a lot of the new skills I worked on over the past 8 years.

My advice to anyone who is younger that is considering taking a break, do yourself a favour and don’t stay totally away from the position. I think of how much better a goalie I would be now if I had played once a month, be it ice, roller or street/ball hockey in net.

And to cross-post, with regard to the thread recently started about playing out – I did that while on my 20+ year hiatus for probably 5 -6 years. All I can say is it is sooooo much easier to put pucks in the  net as opposed to keeping them out.

    (*OK - brevity fail)

It's a stupid thing for the league to do in the first place.   If players looking like NASCAR drivers doesn't bother you, good on ya!  The look of Euro uniforms drives me nuts and I don't want it over here.  It looks cheap and tacky, but that's just one man's opinion.

More than one man's opinion - I want to watch hockey, not bike racing

    A long awaited moment...

ThatCarGuy finally has his own car. Although I thought I wouldn’t be getting a car somebody (won’t say who but it was my dad) put the dodge wagon in a ditch and shattered the subframe so we needed another car.

Yeah, when I was16 my friend's "mother" put their Nova into a row of mailboxes and took out the front end...except that 4 years later it came out that it was really him that was piloting the "postal plough"
