  1. Went and tried on some M5’s and seems like I can fit in either a large or a medium. The medium might be more mobile and seem to fit a little better without the thigh rise being too big

the white pad is large and the blue is medium. My knee pads are usually covered by socks and taped down.

I've been rocking senior level pads with pro gloves. My previous blocker was a the first time I got a senior blocker. It was fine for the most part, but I did occasionally feel shots through it. Not enough to leave a bruise, but enough that I went back to using a pro blocker. But for the most part, you should probably be fine with a senior blocker.

What level were you playing at?

    Good post, thanks.

I had to think about this, but here is my progression of leg pads over the past several years:

-V4, double breaks, thigh strap worn tightly, SUPER squishy.

-V6, single break, thigh strap worn tightly, squishy

-VE8, single break, no thigh strap, ordered Stiff, still squishy

-V9, single break, no thigh strap, ordered Extra Stiff, not squishy but soft

    See a pattern?

So yeah, a progression in my game and in my physical abilities (thank you @Chenner29 for your help and support) has led to wanting more and more stability and rigidity my pads, more and more stiffness, less and less flex.  My Extra Stiff V9s right now after 2 years and playing 2-3 times a week and a few tournaments are now too soft for me.  I use RVH on both side, my mobility on my knees and my edge work is good now and I can do things they do on TV, haha, I just need the gear to do it.

I will say though, shout out to Vaughn for Quick Slide material.  That stuff is truly amazing and was a game changer.  I'm honestly a bit nervous/sad about new pads without it.

I do have the option around here in my LHSs to tinker with both Vapor lines and Supreme lines. In fact, one shop has a full set of Hyperlite 2.  That stuff is unreal and looks and feels great (especially the blocker, jeez).  But the pads are notably softer than Supreme pads and that alone is kind of a turnoff given my progression and my needs for my gear.  Supreme stuff just feels better to me and as a bonus, looks better aesthetically to me as well.  I think I've developed abilities and techniques to warrant jumping out of Vaughn into Bauer and going big, getting Supreme stuff and moving towards the line that is more different than my normal than the Vapor line is.

I did end up ordering a Medium, after all.  I had a chat with Cam at The Hockey Shop in Surrey, BC and he in particular swayed me comfortably into Medium.  Funny point though: I actually placed my order for Large, kinda regretted it, spoke with Cam, decided I would return the Large immediately upon receipt for Medium, and then got contacted by the shop in Pennsylvania that they were in fact out of Large but still had Medium.  I said "Sold, I'll take Medium."

    It was fate.

I understand i too kind of took that same path i went from 2 sets of simmons double break pads, one being a velocity knockoff to warrior G5's in single break. I was able to close my 5 hole so much better with the stiffer single break than the double break. Plus this was my first modern style pad and the sliding and movement was SO much better than the simmons.

I'm in the process of talking myself into a new set of Bauer's right now. My warriors are 3 years old and starting to soften up a little bit more than i would prefer. They have very minimal wear so my rational side is telling me i don't need two sets with playing 1/2 times a week. My fun side though is saying go for it, internal battle. also deciding whether to go with vapors or Supremes, I'm leaning towards Supremes but research and speaking to people here it seems the rebounds and sliding is pretty close between the two lines and at the level i play i probably wouldn't see a difference and all the 3x stuff is on sale right now

Pads like Vaughn Velocity have more torsional flexibility so they twist more laterally.  Coming from V8s to the 3X I definitely noticed the difference there.

What did you feel? i just haven't had enough gear to really tell soft vs stiff. i would think since it just the knee and hips moving then the pad doesn't actually move it just follows your leg.

  5. Not to derail the thread from the gear but i have a question and pardon my ignorance and lack of gear knowledge. So each product line is supposed to fit a certain style, stiff pad vs. flexible. what is the real difference between a softer pad vs a stiffer pad since your shin doesn't actually move and its all hip and knee rotation. wouldn't thigh rise stiffness and boot be the only areas that would come into play? couldn't all pads essentially just have a soft boot and be stiff and it would cover everything? I just don't see the point of flexible pads since flexibility at the shin doesn't do anything. I see softer pads pushed more towards people who don't have flexibility but if your issue is lack of ROM with hips a softer pad wouldn't matter vs a stiffer pad since your body cant physically get into that position.

only real thing is see between the  two lines is boot angle and thigh rise shape/stiffness...trying to expand my knowledge

  6. @seagoal We are almost identical in sizing I'm 5'11 on good days but 5'10 by the evening. My FTK is roughly 20.5 too and i tried on a pair of medium M5's and a pair of large Hyperlites. They sit slightly different but i was landing hair over center on the medium M5's and kind of where you are landing in the Vapors. They are fitting pretty much how my 34 G5's fit and i am able to move around great in those without being clunky. I would take the advise of some of the members here and go with a medium if you feel comfortable in them. It might be hard to get your hands on a psir of mediums to test fit but that would tell you. My LHS doesn't have the widest selection, goalies seem to be the red headed step child, they have a whole giant store full of player gear and a small corner that us goalies are banished too.

I wear PAW knee pads so they aren't as big as yours but i was still on the knee stack without too much thigh rise poking out and smacking each other. Try on some mediums if you can or even medium x3/hyperlites and just take into account that the machs SHOULD sit taller than the medium Vapors.

Question though you stated that you have a narrow BF have you looked into the vapor line they are more curved in the thigh rise and could help close it. You are looking at what appears to be the stiffest and straightest pad on the market. I'm not telling anyone how to spend their money or what pads to buy, just some food for thought

  7. Hey guys,

What are the opinions on “pro” blockers vs senior blockers for upper level beer league. I know level of players vary from place to place and I currently play at a level some guys can shoot but for the most part I’m not getting huge wind ups blasted at me. My warrior pro blocker has been protective enough.

my question is should I splurge on a pro Bauer blocker or save the cash and go with senior level. I’m playing once to twice a week and some weeks I don’t play. No practice or pick up just games at upper intermediate level. I’m getting a pro level glove but I usually think a blocker is a blocker but I don’t want the blocker to crap out prematurely.

Vapor, especially with the changes to hyperlite 2, is 100% a fingers to palm closure.

even though its 60 and not 75 like warrior would the vapor feel more like a warrior than the 75 mach? I know its not apples to apples

Mach is a big 590 meant for fingers up goalies, hy2rlite is a 590 meant for fingers out goalies, and vapor 90 is a 580

My LHS doesn't have any vapor gloves to try on and after reading some reviews its more 590(ish) with the mach being 600(ish). In theory the mach should feel more like a warrior glove but its been pointed out different gloves from different brands don't line up exactly. When I tried on the mach the closure felt more finger dominate( Fingers tips to thumb tip.

From my research it seems people have said the hyperlite SHOULD be more finger dominant. Is the vapor glove actually more finger tips closure or is it fingers the palm/ thumb meat? I have seen contradictory information online, would this be another personal preference on feel?

  10. Hey guys so I’m stuck on what size to get or model to get. I know the model part has a lot to do with personal preference so that’s more on me. I went and tried on some M5’s and some hyperlites just for sizing I would be getting 3x/x5 if I was to go with vapor. My LHS doesn’t have the widest selection. I tried on the m5 in medium and large in HL. I had my skates on and seemed to land on the knee stack with some room on both pads. The HL did have me landing slightly lower on the stack. I asked the associate there what he thought and got you look like you fit in both sizes.

There wasn’t a lot of room to drop down and on carpet I was kind of in an awkwardly wide BF. When I’m on the ice will that change where my knee comes down since the pad can slide and move around more? My FTK depending on where I hyper fixate center is roughly 20.5, putting me in the end of medium and the start of large. Will the m5 steeper boot break down over time and shorten or should I expect the height to stay roughly the same? I’m currently in 34 warriors and landing little bit higher than center but it hasn’t seems to hamper my play at all. I would prefer smaller pads to be more agile and not clunky.

as for the thigh rise the m5 definitely seems to have a bigger thigh rise due to the straighter profile. my concern is that if I was to go larger in M5’s(larges) the thigh rise would be too tall now and when I dropped down it would stick too far out in front of me messing with my stick placement. I’m little worried right now with the m5 messing with my stick placement.

Several members  have helped me so much and I don’t want to beat a dead horse but I’ll be ordering the pads online and can’t just easily exchange them.

  11. I’m sure this has been covers but my Google skills are lacking but what are the differences between the vapor and supreme blockers? I can see the obvious  with the board shape and the thickness. The supreme seems more sloped and the board is thicker. The vapor is thinner and flatter. Do they play different or is the board higher than the other?

I have ftk 19,5 and I am wearing Bauer M. I think, that sr S will be pretty good for you👍

Where are you landing on the stack? I'm right on the upper edge of medium and lower end of large. I'm trying to narrow down the sizing for bauer

It's going to be a different glove at the end of the day. On Warrior gloves I use a lot more of a full hand movement when closing as the crease of the glove is more centered on my palm.

The Mach glove I use way more fingers to close as the crease is closer to my knuckles.

One thing I've always liked about Warrior gloves is the almost "mechanical" feel that they have. They snap shut so easily and they're so protective, it feels like the two sides of the gloves are on hinges.

When I switched over to Bauer and used my Mach, it took me a long while to get used to the almost baseball glove feel that traditional catchers have had.

I'm sure what @ThatCarGuy is true about manipulating the break to match Warrior (though I'm not sure how), but at the end of the day these are going to be very different feeling gloves.

If you're not sure about it in store, chances are you may not be thrilled with it on ice.

I get the same feeling from my warrior instead of a wrapping close it felt like it was two different pieces on hinges and snap close like a book. The break is in the center of my palm so I'm able to close the glove just by opening and closing my palm. Its not that i wasn't thrilled with it i was just expecting it to close like my warrior since its closer to it than the vapor glove. Would the Mach always be more of a finger close or would it breaking to more palm over time? I was under the impression the Supreme gloves were more hand and the Vapor was more fingers closure do i have it backwards? unfortunately my LHS does not have any vapor gloves to try on

Weird thing is that with the M5 I am able to muscle it and close it more like my warrior but I'm guessing the extra padding in the Mach is not letting me do that without deforming the glove.

If you break it in incorrectly you can make a Mach or M5 pro feel like a warrior glove. However it does greatly affect tee seal and overall durability of the glove

Ya when i shoved my hand in and tried to close it like the warrior the front of the glove (side closest to the shooter) did not evenly meet up with the back of the pocket, if that makes sense. Instead of the edges meeting equally they were uneven.

My guess is i was trying to make it close like my other glove but it wasn't broken in/ doesn't close the same. Do supremes always have that holding a can feeling or does that break in?

There's only two straps to mess with. The fingers and the hand.

Since you fit the M5 Pro fine, I have a feeling that either the finger straps were too tight still, or it was an INT glove?

Not sure, but I have zero issues with room in my Mach glove, hell I wish it was tighter.

Ok so went back and tried on the glove and still having some tightness issues. One thing I might be messing up is trying to get the glove to far onto my hand or put the break where my warrior feels. When I put on the Bauer and try to close it it feels like I’m wrapping my hand around a soda can. I k is the breaks aren’t identical but is that how the Bauer feels vs the warrior? My warrior feels like a single clean sharp edge in my palm.  Once the bauer is broken in would it be more like the warrior break feel or will there always be a roundish feeling when closing the glove? I loosened Botha traps and didn’t even tighten them down and my fingers were smashed in the glove so I’m guessing I was jamming my hand in too far.

the bauer off the shelf felt like I would need to pinch my finger tips to my thumb tip  vs the warrior which feels finger to base of thumb/ thumb meat

  16. With the x5 coming out and the 3x being discounted is there any difference besides the graphic on the two lines? If it’s just graphics might be better to just grab some 3x

Bauer goalie Vapor and GSX line-upson sale at Pure and Monkey. Sizing and colors are pretty limited. Pure seems to have more availability.

No coupon codes needed. Good hunting.

Awesome thank you! Wonder if there is a difference between the 3x and x5 besides graphic

I just got my set of custom 3X about two months ago.  I don’t regret it - love the pads and blocker and am close to telling the glove “I love you, too”.  I am a little jealous of the fact you can put silver in any of the zones on the X5, though!  I loved Logan Thompson’s all silver set up from last(?) year.

On a separate note - has anyone heard price point rumors on the performance line Konekt?

Did you need to size up with the flatter boot?
