This post got me thinking so I got out a tape yesterday and did both ATK and FTK measurements sitting and standing with knee slightly bent. Interesting, if you look at CCM sizing chart it says to measure standing, while the Warrior chart says measure while sitting. My measurements differed between sitting and standing by about 3/4 inch. My takeaway is that if you are looking for a perfect fit..go to a well stocked store and try everything on. If, you are like me with no store close and trying to take advantage of online deals, then you might ultimately have to use your best estimate and it will probably fit ok, if not perfect.

I am curious what the general consensus is when between leg pad sizes..order up or down? Would you rather be just below or above center of knee block?

From what I was told it’s better to order up than down. Not so much with with stiffer pads these days but softer pads tend to settle a little more so I personally would rather have a pad that starts out a hair to big then settles a little bit then have a pad smaller then settle and be too small. My Simmons started out at 34 but once the boot broke in they settled a little bit and I noticed my thigh rise didn’t come out as much and I was landing a little higher.

I would want to go up within reason to give me some more 5 hole coverage if they were stock pads.

This brings up a good point, whether using ATK or FTK..floor or ankle is pretty easy, but, where exactly on the knee do you measure to..my best guess from these pictures is 20"..but, depending upon where on the knee you could argue anywhere from 19-20.5 inches. Is there a definitive spot to measure to? The diagrams I've seen from both Warrior and CCM are not exactly drawn to scale; but, missing by an inch or inch and a half definitely impacts sizing if trying to order online without a store available.

Passau actually posted yesterday where to measure to find your pivot point and that is where you want to measure to according to warrior and CCM. Using their chart I found out I was closer to 20 than 19.5

Medium Stiffness: This is our stock stiffness.  Hypercomp reinforcements throughout the thigh rise section of the core.

X-Stiff:  This is a stiffness option we've offered to our European pros for a number of years.  Yes, it makes the thigh rise stiffer than stock but in my personal opinion it's really more of a longevity stiffness.  EU pros skate 6-7 days a week and put their gear through very demanding conditions.  They require a core built to last for a long season and heavy use.  We're simply bringing this option to retail custom now because there is an increasing interest from elite level goalies in North America who want a stiffer pad that will maintain that stiffness for longer periods of time. (This also has HyperComp in the same areas as Medium).  The main difference is the layup of HD foams.

    Kirk,

thank you for the clarification! Would you say that the average beer league goalie who’s on the ice 1/2 times a week would be just fine with the stock stiffness or would it be better in the long run to get extra stiff the ensure the pad doesn’t break down and get softer?

  4. Anyone try out the X-stiff option on the G5’s. I know puckstopper did a small review on them and said it was pretty stiff over stock. Looking at the customizer there are two options medium and X-stiff, I take it medium is their stock stiffness? I just don’t know why you would need a super stiff thigh rise, I would think the whole pad would be stiff.

I’ve read mixed reviews from G# are really stiff too they aren’t stiff at all (when compared to stiff pads). I was under the impression hypercomb ran over the entire face of the pad is X-stiff just extra foams or more hypercomb? I’m trying to avoid super straight rigid pads but I also want to slow the breakdown of the pads since I plan to use them for some time.

right now my double break Simmons thigh rises are pretty soft, even over time with stock stiffness will the warriors always be more rigid in the thigh rise?

  5. Just measured my +2 and was a full inch/ inch and a half shorter than your warriors and ccm’s.

so In theory a stock thigh rise will 9” and the +2 will be .5 more if both measurements are taken at the knee stack.

yes go look at the sizing chart.  these are also the same people that say the g3 are super stiff when they touched it for 5 min or tried it once while the other caamp that used it says they are too soft.  shannon szabados uses a 33 +3 warrior.  its just perceived as being big.  always go with ur raw measurement preference not the stock size.

Damn, ok thank you for the heads up I’ll have to find the sizing chart. You know where I could find it or what is called so I can plug it into the google machine?

  7. 50 minutes ago, DL42 said:

they have a chart go with it.   its actually smaller the 33" base is 8" vs 10" on brians and CCM , I think vaughn is on the same boat but i could care less to do the reserach.   what this means a 33" + 3  warrior ritual is the same as brians 33+1"in the thighrise.

So you’re saying that if you take a 33 in warrior and Brian’s that you would need to make it a +3 in warrior to equal a +1 in other manufacturers? I find that hard to believe since I’ve read several people saying the stock thigh rise is huge.

  8. How are the thigh rises on warrior pads? Been reading they measure bigger than what they say, longer than other brands. I’m using a +2 right now but the 1.5 seemed pretty big.

We have not seen any changes to our leg pad sizing.  What some goalies might be experiencing is how versatile our sizing is because we use 0.5" whereas not all brands do on certain sizes (They go full 1" increments sometimes).  So, changing your size slightly on a Warrior pad won't be a huge leap.. more of a dial it in kind of difference.  We used to have a blog site with an article on sizing.  The blog site is no longer up so I'll copy and paste the article here.  (Sorry it's kinda lengthy!)  You can right click on the diagrams to see the visual representations.

Leg pad sizing can be confusing. Adding to this confusion is the fact that each company has their own way of achieving a range of sizes. In this blog, we will explain how our sizing works and the differences between each size so you have a complete understanding when purchasing your next set of Ritual G3 or R/GT leg pads.

Many goalies prefer the advantages and convenience of going with stock gear as opposed to custom. With this in mind, we have created a leg pad sizing system that allows for a great fit in stock sizes. In truth, our stock sizing offers more variables than some competitor’s custom offering. Here is an explanation of how our sizing system works.

The size of a senior leg pad changes in two main areas by half-inch increments:

    1.     Shin Section

    2.     Thigh Section

By adjusting our sizing in half-inch increments, instead of full inch increments (some competitors only offer full inch increments; even on custom), goaltenders have more variety in choosing their size and ensuring a proper fit at the knee landing. As an example, a 35+1.5” sized leg pad is taller than a 34+1.5” leg pad by a half-inch in the shin section and a half-inch in the thigh rise section. The end result is the 35+1.5” sized leg pad is one inch taller in the overall pad height. By offering shin sections that vary in only half-inch increments, a goalie can really dial in a perfect fit in the knee landing. This is crucial for performance.

It is important to note that there is custom sizing available to goalies as well. In most cases, this is simply for fine-tuning the thigh section measurement since all of our shin lengths are present in our stock offering (exceptions being 37” & 38” shin lengths). As an example, if a 34+1.5” fits a goalie perfectly in the knee but they require an extra half inch in the thigh section, they would order a 34+2”. A more complicated example would be if the total length of a 34+1.5” is perfect but the knee landing area is too low and needs to be raised by a half inch, the goalie would want to custom order a 35+.5”. This ultimately means the shin section gets longer by a half inch and the thigh section shortens by a half inch, leaving the total length of the pad the same but raising the knee landing.

We approach sizing carefully at Warrior because we know it directly relates to how well a goalie performs in their pads. We are the only brand in the goalie industry to offer a Fit Guarantee Promise on every set of custom leg pads built. We offer a wide variety of stock sizes, utilizing small size increments, providing you the best chance to dial in an exact fit, thus maximizing the performance of your Ritual pads. Elevate YOUR Game.

What is your guys fit guarantee? Tried a quick google search and didn’t find anything.

Im still trying to narrow down my sizing, not being able to go and try on some is driving me crazy.

GT2 doesn't play any taller than the GT1. I've been in a 33+1.5 for both and they were identical.

It may "play taller" due to a stiffer thighrise, but that's the same argument as getting the same sized G4 pad.

    What’s your FTK?

I dig the purple palm with the black T.  I second Puckstopper on no black lace   It looks cool, but I had a glove with black lace and had several instances where I thought the puck was in there, but it wasn’t...and it ended up in the net a few of those times.

What did you go with? I’ve only ever used skate lace and always thought it retained pucks easier

  14. What combo y’all think? I started out liking the purple T but starting to like black T with purple binding.

Extra padding in the thigh and hip area. Only thing I requested that they missed was to remove some of the lower interior mesh that gets caught on my Brian’s knee pad Velcro. Can’t wait to get these on the ice. Def more protection than my standard optik1 pants and the internal belt will be something new to try. I don’t tuck and currently use a Passau pro pack chesty. I might get a optik2 chesty to try.

Do you know if Brian’s will/ can embroider team logos?

  16. So think I’m going to pull the trigger and order a set of pro pads from the guys at TGC, with their killer deal right now it’s hard to pass it up. Ill get the colors I want as well as the longevity I’m looking for.

ive been using double tees for forever now but see G5’s come standard with single tees. Are tees personal preference or is their benefit of one over the other. I’ve never used a single tee besides on a sr glove I used for a couple weeks ten years ago. Both my Simmons gloves have been double and only thing I’ve read was you can see the pucks easier in the double.

these are my narrowed down colors, fan of the retro knee roll look so leaning towards them 248C8E1F-9BD9-497D-845C-BD5E0085D873.thumb.png.5e184cdb707232f90763cc98050644a4.png8AD849F1-B1BC-40AD-86EB-712D95636ACB.thumb.png.f0d6937a67487a547f3a985033802747.png

Yup.  I was a 19.5" on the nose.  I was told the newer Warrior series (GT2/G5) may play taller with the hypercomp.  A few guys I talked with went 1" shorter on the GT2 from the GT1.  There is also a chart that shows the where the size difference is on Warrior pads.  I know the knee stack only moves 1/2" from the 33 to the 34.  @Kirk3190 can speak to this as well.

I was in a 33+1.5 but was going to move to a 32+2 is I decided to order a new set.

You stated that you don’t use a boot strap so it pulls the pads up higher, would you still be landing on the stack if you did use the boot strap?

Not that it matters cause ftk sizing, but how tall are you guys?  I'm 5'6" in my G2's but they've settled in the boot channel, and I land near the top of the landing gear now.  5'6 is listed as 32".  I don't remember how much of an issue it was when I first got them. But were so stiff, especially in the boot break, it took over a year before I really liked them ( only playing a few times a month back at that time.) The knee elastic was not a good design, and I should have changed them out much sooner than I did.  I feel like I could wear a 33" now, but a 33" might be super tall and clunky.  Maybe I'd be better off in the GT series, if I need a softened G series.  But I also need to make my pads last 6 years or more.  On the opposite end, I've also considered getting intermediate 32+1's to save cash and increase mobility.

I’m 5’10/5’11 on a good day. I tried on G4 pads and the 33 seemed to fit me but I was not all the way at the top of the knee stack but landing higher than halfway. I also tried on 34’s and they seemed massive and I was landing a little lower but not that much lower. Wish my LHS was open so I could go try them on again

I was in the top 2/3, but I wore no boot strap so the pad would ride up and sit higher.  I didn't have any issues with settling of the pads for 1.5 years I had them.  I think too many guys are oversizing pads.  I was going to move into a 32" pad if I went back to Warrior for increase mobility.  No way would I want a 34.

This look roughly like your FTK?  I would say I’m between 19.5 and 19.75

Warrior sizing strictly goes by a Foot to Knee measurement.  Its really foolproof

The other thing to remember that new pads will feel and fit far different than your V3s.  Take your skates and maybe your pants to help fit proper.  But the fit chart is dead on.  I'm a 19.75 FTK and I wear a 33+1.5 with no boot strap.

The other recommendation I would make is getting an elastic toe tie.  The Warrior ARS is okay, it can be snug.  Pro Laces has a 10% off sale right now with a "TRAVSUCKS" coupon code.  I have GT Pros and love them (and your hips, knee and ankles will thank you):

Where are you landing On the kneestack? You recommended that I go with 33 too and my ftk measurement is roughly 19.5/75. I only ask because retailer suggested I go with 34 but like you mentioned I want to be mobile and not clumsy. Did your boot break in and cause the pads to settle a little?

Im worried about ordering a set and having the sizing being off and be stuck with a set of $1500 pads that are to big or small.

I've had Sr G3 stuff for 2.5 years. used 3-5x a week. Not particularly well cared for, tossed around and treated like shit. If i hadn't purchased a size too big (but it still works fine), I wouldn't have any qualms with using these until they're beaten to a pulp, and given how well everything feels besides crusty palms (which G4/G5 liners can still slot in, for quick easy refresh),I don't see any point going to pro for me personally.

I know the pads are stiffer foams but did you find them settle at all? Shrink at all once the boot was broken in more?
