  1. So what do we think so far?

Carolina's D is relentless and they play heavy. Sorry Rangers' fans (I am one,,,,doing to Igor what they did to Hank). Calgary seems to have decided to crash the Dallas goalie every chance they get. Toronto,,,,,when they are on, they are something else and Campbell is a really good goalie. I havent seen alot of the games out west except some Flames' game but I've enjoyed all the ones I have seen so far. No clue yet who I project to win the Grail.

My worst was 2006 in my first year of juniors someone skated over the back of my leg after I got knocked down to the ice, completely sliced my left hamstring to the bone.  Was able to get back on the ice after about 6 months but the muscle has still never fully recovered.

More recently, few years ago I tore my left groin then a pretty bad sprain again a year later, I've since started taking my pre-game warm-ups way more seriously, stationary bike, stretching, foam-roller, etc... as well as some of Maria Mountain's off-ice groin strengthening workouts and knock on wood have been injury free for a while.

That is so medieval on your ham, Wow!  A Malarchuk to the leg.

@Scythe, hope your thumb fully recovers.

THIS happened this morning, it all ties in together, I will try to be brief

I changed the oil on my truck a couple weeks ago and usually put the used stuff back into the 5qt container but this time I couldn't find the 5qt container, so I bought 5 1qt containers. Instead of messing around with filling up the 5 1qt containers I left it in the big drip pan to take that over later and recycle. Well, the last time I played a game I emptied the bag to air the gear out and set my mask on top of an empty box which was next to that big drip pan with the oil in it. You see where this is going?

    fast forward to this morning

My wife needed a box to mail something, she looked at one then I noticed some in the back corner that looked better. When she got back there, I said watch out for the oil. Right after saying watch out for the oil, I hear "oh no!" I get back there and see her pulling my mask out of the drip pan, Thing got dunked in used 5w 30. It's not a high dollar mask (CCM GFL) but still. Couple of straps are stained now. It's drying out after using the blue Dawn dishwashing soap to clean it up. Will probably get a new harness which I was going to do anyway before, it's starting to fray a bit in a couple spots. 😣

If your Mrs is like mine, I can imagine the "oh no". Mine will mess with me about anything and everything but wont mess w my equipment. Hope you reassured her to forget it.

What was the purpose of wearing no helmet? It's scary to think about getting hit with a puck in the head.

Just a different time and a different ethic. If a player wore a helmet, his testicular fortitude was considered questionable.

  5. I dont think you missed anyone, MTH. Pretty much of a miracle none of them got seriously injured. Wilson did have a skull fracture when he was with Chicago but I dont remember how that happened. Funny about Carlyle; he was a scary dude when seen in person during a game, total monster.

Hardest shot I was ever hit with came off the stick of Frank 'The Animal' Bialowas.

He was years retired. Showed up to play in sweats and a flannel with an old canvas bag of gear.

Heavy shot. Felt like I was hit with a cannon ball.

    Frank the Animal

That is awesome, MTH!  There's all the players in The National, who all have a minimum of NHL skill(s), and the rest of us.

Honestly, the one time 15 years ago I was scored on with the lacrosse move, I WAS on my feet. It’s more about the player moving from one side of the net to the other and executing the move quickly before the goalie can get all the way over. It’s a good reminder to turn and look at the attacker as you’re about to go to the other post. At worst, if you can’t get all the way over, you can lead with a hand and block it away.

@WillyGrips13 that is a really good point. It is a race to the opposite post like any other play behind the net. The only distinguishing element is the puck is off the ice cradled on the stick blade.

Hug the post... no more lacrosse goals.

    Bring back standup!

Yes, MTH! Leather pads that weigh 12 lbs each dry, leather gloves, junk C/A, skates with a full cowling that are sharpened with a flat ground, but we wont get truly back to the way things ought to be until we make skate saves and wear fiberglass masks again. Are we not men or are we Devo? LOL.

  9. I posted elsewhere that I got beat on the lacrosse 2 weeks ago by a young player, with as they say, "mad skills". He tried it again this past Friday and the attempt failed. The puck just bounced off my chest. I dont like the move but if the players have the skill to do it and the D wont prevent it, we just have to figure a way to stop it.

  10. I cannot handle country. Sorry to my wife who loves it and the other fans of it here. I just dont understand how many different ways they can make songs about pickup trucks, beer, and someone stealing someone's girl. The knockout blow for me was when country began to be used in Applebee's commercials. Wifey told me they were real songs; I thought they were just jingles for the ads. I was mortified.

  11. Some context. I started organized hockey in 1971. Played continuously until 1984. Missed 84-85 season. Played continuously from 1985 to  1995. Picked up again in 2015 to present but not in a  league, the semi organized drop in I've mentioned elsewhere. Here's my injury CV:

    1) destroyed left glenohumeral joint with which I played for 2 years - reconstruction effectively ended my super serious youth to college hockey career

    2) torn right knee medial meniscus

    3) torn left oblique and bruised liver

    4) 3 medically documented concussions

    5) torn right glenohumeral joint

    6) grade 1 sprain of the right acromioclavicular joint

Keep in mind that the gear was junk. All the joint injuries were from crashes or pileups in the crease/slot. Of the list, the most painful was the oblique and liver. The oblique took 6 months to resolve and the liver bruise literally put me down. It felt like I had lost my wind but I could breath. My legs, however, just collapsed leaving me in a fetal position. I then understood why boxers target it.

  12. I dont know...being an UFA, the Bhawks had to deal him to get something. He would be too costly to sign and the team is "rebuilding" with a cap problem. I would like them to bring up Commesso and see what he has against the big boys. Lankinen is ok but I think he's as good as he's going to be on a team like this. The other two...if it was going to happen for them, it would have already happened.

MAF's demeanor and attitude during his time here were the same. He never got bitchy or rude despite playing on a good men's league team. Not my favorite goalie but he's great and an excellent professional. He's got a lot left in the tank. He even tried to stop a blast without his catch glove on a few nights ago.

  13. For his sake, I'm glad the Bhawks traded him. I am a fan of his and there is no future here. The team is awful and after what he's accomplished over his time, I am happy for him. He was getting the _hit beat out of him every night and he never complained.

What do y'all think about Eve Gascon making her QMJHL debut? Yes, her team lost in OT, and her performance was statistically underwhelming (18 saves on 23 shots), but she kept Gatineau in the game for a long time. I watched the game, and what killed Gatineau was giving up too many penalties and their inability to clear their own zone. Rimouski had problems with going offside, but they were able to capitalize on Gatineau's miscues.

I dont have a problem with it. If she can play, she can play. Things get worked out over time so we'll see.

  15. It's all good. The scorer is young enough to be my son or I am old enough to be his dad.

What can you do? The young players have great skill and I can cling to the notion that the Michigan on bunny and the lacrosse on me are nothing more than hot dog moves together with "back in my day, someone would have knocked him into the parking lot". But skills are skills. However, this was the first time he and I skated together so now that I know what to look for, he wont beat me with it again.

  16. On Friday, I lost my virginity on the lacrosse goal. I finally got beat on it. Usually I just stay on my dinosaur feet and move to the other post and the puck hits me in the chest. No big deal with my outdated "technique" of staying on my feet. This time I got outsmarted.

A really good player was to my left in the corner with the puck and no one pressuring him (not a surprise) with another good player wide open between the rings in the slot. I was up against my left post (the way a dinosaur like me would be) expecting him to pass to the man in the slot. The skater with puck however began to skate to the back of the net where he had done the Gretzgy pass over the net 4 or 5 times. So I got low on my skates getting my head under the cross bar and expected the puck to come over the crossbar to the man in the slot. Instead, the SOB lacrossed my backside on my right and tucked the puck in the upper right corner. First time I've been beaten on it. Oh the humiliation and shame. The skater tapped my pads and smirked. (I had been kicking his backside all night). Of course with my previously noted big mouth, I congratulated him on a nice move and called him a donkey hole. His smirk turned into a laugh.

Nothing worse than a short goalie, playing standup and running his mouth.

Hold on - can be worse. If he's a wrong handed goober too. Catch with your left hand like a man!

LOL...awesome. Best thing I've heard in a few weeks.

I am pretty much of a disaster and misfit.

There's a huge difference in the level of play, too.  I normally play division 4 and I'll pick up games often in 6.  Huge difference in the caliber and awareness of D.  They can be pretty clueless about their positioning and goalie etiquette.  Even just little things like crowding happen way more at lower levels.  Last night I had to use my blocker to push a D out of my space.  He asked me about it and I said "If I drop into my butterfly and hit your skates, or, if I can't slide around because you're in my way, you're too close."

This was like a revelation for him: "Oh, that makes sense."  Apparently no goalie has told him this before.

I experience something similar. Being a stand up dinosaur and short, I have to play above the paint unless the play is down low. At this stage of things, I skate in a decent semi organized drop in with some good players and some not so good players. I cannot tell you how many times a D-man, however well intentioned, skates backwards into me. I sympathize because I think D is the hardest position but I just want to tell them if you arent going to step up and close the gap, just let the effing skater go by and let me try and deal with him. The mobile screen is PIA esp when he backs into you. Yes, even though I am short, I do have a big mouth and tell them to step up but it falls on deaf ears most of the time. Oh well.

  19. I complained about the cost and availability in another thread. After striking out a 3 total hockey stores that allegedly sell goalie equipment, I went to Gunzo's and they found one in the basement. It was inexpensive but not a stick I like but no choice so...

  20. I dont spray; it was just something I never adopted.  😳  Equipment comes out of the bag after each use but that only helps spread the stench.
