  1. I just ended up taking the clips off my old cage, the metal is still perfectly strong. Looks good, and matches the rest of my white/black/silver gear:
  2. Hey y'all, I was switching up the cage on my Protechsport this morning, and I realized I forgot to ask Michel to throw in some extra clips with my new cage — bummer. I'm heading out to a hardware store today, but I have a strong suspicion that these are not something you'd find at a local hardware store or Home Depot (can anyone confirm?). I'm not really looking to order some mask hardware kit online, or go to a hockey store before my next skate (none are particularly local, and we're hosting guests this weekend). I guess if worse comes to worse, I can just put the old dented cage back on for one more game, but I was wondering: Can I just used a pair of needle-nose pliers to take the clips of my old white cage? Would that 'compromise' the strength of the clips? Probably stupid questions, but hey, it's my face, etc.
  3. I just tried to create a separate "Show Off Your P***y" thread for these pictures, and now I'm being told I'm banned from TheGoalNet???
  4. Hi, my name's stackem30, and I'm here to talk with you all about an important issue that is near to my heart: unfunny posts and memes. Every day, millions of people online are subjected to seriously unfunny posts and memes. While the people who create these profoundly unfunny posts and un-dank memes are under the illusion that they are fostering happiness and laughs, they are actually nurturing a vast array of groans, eye-rolls, and "fuck, this thread is awful" exits. One of the devastating side effects of meme-culture is that it has persuaded these terminally unfunny, uncreative people that their 100% completely unfunny jokes that totally suck actually become funnier the more they do them, because irony or something. It's a tragic cycle of misplaced self-confidence and abuse. It is senseless. But there is a cure... Stop posting unfunny memes and jokes. Nobody's laughing with you. Seriously, it's just a big swing and a miss on your part. Stop lying to yourself, acknowledge that your joke is bad and that it will not grow on people no matter how many times you try it, and end this self-perpetuating misery. So speak up. Unite your voices. Together, we can end this cycle of abuse, and create an environment where the memes still aren't that funny, but they're at least "okay" enough that we don't experience a small brain hemorrhage. This is the future we all deserve.
  5. He sounds like a dick. If I'm reading this right, he's being completely sarcastic about this being a ripped-off set. Sure, they look like Vaughn stripes (particularly the placement of the stripe on the blocker, a la Martin Jones). But no, I don't think I (or many of the people in this thread) would go as far as to say someone's "ripping off Vaughn" by creating pads/gloves with a singular, classic stripe. That's a very general look. But he's just using this particular post in an attempt to depict the accusation that he rips off designs as ridiculous, and without merit (it's not). He's blatantly ripped off far more specific graphics that are in no way universal. Basically, I think he matched that comment with this particular picture to undermine the claims that he's ripping people off. I doubt he'd be so bold as to pair that sarcastic comment with a picture of some gear that clearly is a ripoff of someone else's work... Edit: I just scrolled through his Instagram page (I don't have one) and when someone mentioned that one of his recent sets looked just like P2s, his response was "Thank you Captain Obvious." What a guy...
  6. Thanks fellas — I just wrote to Michel to ask about a replacement. I really like the white cat-eye (kind of classic), but I'm wondering if I might not look into a chrome cat-eye instead (assuming he does a single-bar version). I wouldn't have to worry about paint chipping, and since my gear setup is all black/white/silver, it would be kind of cool to have that full color scheme on my mask...
  7. If a mask company can't be bothered to create their own shell design, what else can't they be bothered to do, quality-wise? (Honestly, designs don't need to be that different — a few small adjustments to contours/the holes is enough to be somewhat distinctive without altering the function/safety). Pure laziness, at the very least. They may just earn themselves a reputation for being a knockoff company, and it might bite them in the ass. People may be cool with leg pads and gloves being a little "second-rate", but will they feel the same way about the thing protecting their faces/brains? Never heard of them before today, FWIW.

    New Team, Old Gear

Dang, I'd never seen Hespeler gear outside of sticks — that's a great looking set, and I like that they used that loopy script logo (reminds me of another "H" brand with loopy script). Wish they'd used the same logo on their sticks, Ozzy could have used the style points
  9. I just started a thread about this, but I realized that this thread may have some useful input, too — sorry if that's a bit obnoxious: Took a heavy shot to my Brodeur Protechsport the other night, and saw that the cage sustained a small bend/crack. It's not super noticeable — you can see it at the bottom of the eye-opening on the right side (your right). This is somehow the first time in my 20 years of playing that I've damaged a cage in any noticeable way, and so I'm not really sure how serious/negligible the damage is. Based on some of the bent cages I've seen on here and in the pros, it's pretty minor... but I'd feel better getting a few opinions from people. Is this anything to worry about? Keep my eye on? That crack is just in the paint, right? It shouldn't affect the integrity of the cage, right? Either way, I should probably email Michel and ask for him to send a spare cage. Has anyone done this before? Do you remember what he charged? I assume that his cages are all uniform size, despite the fact that the masks are all custom-measured... any information is appreciated! PS — @motowngoalie I visited Michel to get fitted for my mask, and received it in the mail last spring — no bag included. So you may have to treat yourself
  10. The Brown neck collar seals the deal... legendary!
  11. I saw the other day that the NHL officially started releasing "Top 10 Cellys of the Week" video compilations — you know, to go along with goals, saves, and hits — and I aged 58 years on the spot.
  12. Dude, this is a goalie gear board, and you're doing it wrong. Here, let me help you: "Clean."
  13. Not much of a car guy at all, but playing goalie has always ensured that my weird love for station wagons will continue. Much like my gear, I prefer the older stuff, even if I fully acknowledge it's less safe, functional, etc. I grew up with a Volvo 240 in this exact blue (!), and it had a super-roomy trunk for my gear (and a teammate's). It was beautiful. Well, I didn't think so at the time... but everyone in town sure knew who I was! I've driven Subaru Foresters since ~2012. My wife and I just leased a 2019. The trunk isn't much compared to that Volvo, but I fit my big bag, pads, and sticks just fine. I always drive to hockey by myself, anyway. Now if we're talking which cars I *wish* I had to take my gear to hockey...

    New Team, Old Gear

Yeah, I liked that too. I am kind of in the middle of the goalie equipment debate. I have thought goalie gear is too big for some time now (even with some of the restrictions in the past 10 years), and I am happy that they made C/As smaller, etc. At the same time, I do agree that shrinking goalie equipment will not have much impact on the scoring, and that any scoring drought should be more attributed to better goalies and defensive systems. I guess I resent that goalie equipment is given so much attention, even if I simultaneously agree it should continue to be addressed. It's just something I want done on principle, so that we never have to question the integrity of a goalie based on his gear. I truly let out a laugh when someone asked Roy in that video, "If a few extra inches don't make a difference, why have the bigger gear" and he responded, "Because it was there!" Nice try, Patrick... but it's not Mt. Everest. I think that's a valid question and a bullshit response. I know we talk about sports having the slimmest margin of error and how athletes will do anything for the competitive edge... but it doesn't matter if you're talking about steroids, sports drinks, or the little necklaces MLB pitchers wear. If you chase any of those things down the logic hole, you ultimately end up with the same conclusion: athletes do these things because they do think it will make a difference, even if it's a small one. Anyone saying otherwise is either being dishonest, or hasn't thought much about it themselves.

You think so? Honestly, I don't think it's so bad (and I tend to want to hammer guys for stupid-oversized gear). I know the size of gloves and blockers was generally inflated in the 90's, but in this instance I think the design of the D&R glove (kind of a one-piece, and a round shape) makes it look larger than it actually is. The cheater and the pocket are definitely noticeable, but I feel overall it's not that enormous of a glove. Oddly enough, my mind goes to Hasek and Roy when it comes to huge gloves. These pictures (both from 1996, from what it's worth) kinda show what I'm talking about — not only do they have big features, they just look like they're made for a human of a different size entirely, like a 10-foot giant. Mostly, they just look unwieldy — how did those guys 'flash the leather' and snag NHL shots with those massive things? I guess if they're big enough, you don't need to move them much! Anyway, here's a really fascinating video from a 1998 conference on goalie equipment size — you see a lot of familiar faces (Roy, Beezer, Healey, Cujo, Bettman, Dryden, Lamoriello, etc) having some (very elementary) discussion on equipment sizing. It's interesting to see how the debate has both evolved and not-evolved over time. And before I'm accused of hijacking this thread, keep in kind that Roy's still wearing his Montreal pads in those pictures

Sad news, folks. Bauer's graphic designer, who just designed a *gorgeous* set of Vancouver gear for McKenna, just smashed his head into his computer monitor so hard that he died. Rest in peace.

    New Team, Old Gear

The best part about this trade is that both goalies sport custom graphics that likely make pad wraps an impossibility When MTH revived this thread, I was thinking about how the "new team, old gear" phenomena is diminishing with the advent of wraps — teams/staff/goalies seem to feel it's worth doing more often than not, and equipment managers are insanely quick with that stuff. I know this trade just happened and that there was likely no time to cover their old colors, but I think these guys might be sporting their old colors for a few games... I'd venture Brians' and Bauer have already started on their new gear. Hell, I'd imagine Nillson's new gear may have even been shipped by now, as they could have just cut the same graphic with Sens colors. McKenna, on the other hand, seems to really enjoy putting thought into his gear, getting cool custom graphics, etc. Since his current graphic is team-specific, Bauer wouldn't just make the same pad with new colors. I bet he'll want to do something cool with Vancouver, anyway — so we may see him in Ottawa gear for a little longer while his new setup is being designed. Then again, Bauer can just design the graphic on a computer and print it out, rather than cutting out leather swatches. I don't know, this stuff is fun to think about. Anyone here have much insight into how companies turn out gear when a pro client is traded? @TheGoalNet?

    New Team, Old Gear

I probably wrote this in the old thread, but I'll never forgive Brodeur for not getting a set of royal-blue gloves to wear when the Devils wore their throwback jerseys. In truth, they only wore them (as throwbacks) a few times during Brodeur's career, seldom enough to not warrant any new gear — he had a tribute mask painted to look like that ^ and got a special red Sherwood stick, but that was it. Still, would have been fun in the sense that it would have baffled 99.9999% of Devils fans, and thrilled the 0.0001% of fans who remembered his blue St. Hyacinth set.

Hey! No need to bring the Devils' 2001 loss into this... You're doing the lord's work, MTH.
  20. Thanks! The small guys really have worked out for me -- I obviously have a taste for slightly older stuff, and the smalls guys are the ones who have been able to make that happen for me. Both my gloves need some work (a new palm for blocker, and I need to beef up the palm of my glove) but I love all my gear.
  21. Whoa! I had no idea a Heaton pad so much as touched Richter's legs during his NHL career. Those are sweet. Not quite the same as "the spike", but I asked for a slight twist on the Kenesky 'R-Series' graphic to make it resemble Brodeur's Helite III's up there ^^ It's a pretty vague tribute, colored knee rolls with a diagonal stripe -- several brands have had a pad that looks like that: Koho Revolution, Helite III, Vaughn Vision, etc. I'd like to get a pair of gloves that are a similar-but-not-too-similar take on the Heaton Wave to complete the look at some point.
  22. Wanting guys in the NHL to wear your gear really has nothing to do with selling them the pads they wear... it's all about their power of influence. The number one place that those youth and beer league goalies look to is still the NHL, bar none. Nike knows that giving one pair of sneakers to Lebron James is more valuable than selling half a million sneakers to half a million kids. Passau might be doing fine without the NHL, but if they could persuade some NHL goalies to wear their stuff and they could afford the logo fee, they'd have their gear in the NHL tomorrow.
  23. I'm more perturbed by the lack of vision or imagination displayed by someone who decided to go with a custom graphic. Really, that rendering of a (soon-to-be-outdated) CCM Premier pad is the best design that person could think to get on a brand new set of gloves? Hell, I don't even think it makes much more sense if that person already has a matching set of CCM legpads... get something better on your gloves, and have your next set of legpads match that! At the end of the day, it's that person's money (or their parents, if I had to guess), and if that graphic makes them happy and Battram's willing to do it, go with god. But it sure seems like a wasted opportunity to me... (... as well as a shady, fairly unethical business practice on Battram's part, but I've already established that as my opinion)
  24. Yeah, but the Devil's advocate argument you're making is just, "So what, they don't care." I think everyone understands that both Scott and the customer do not care. People are trying to get into the nuances of why they should care, what they can do, etc.
