    Irbe inspired? I approve!

Do they help you play ‘like wall’?

Somewhat. I am more standup than butterfly, but do use modern elements. And I love his gear.

My local repair shop is selling pro-stock Vaughns. They are beautiful, but the thigh-rise is like +3s. They offered free chop work if someone buys them. Now their work is impeccable and I'm sure it would come out better than these, but the thought of cutting pads like that makes me cringe.

Reminds me of a guy who cut his G4 pads with a saw in between games during a tournament.

The only thing that becomes weird is the taper on the top of the thigh rise. It’s not all that advisable to cut more than 1.25” off unless you’re going to thusly taper the foam as well. I am certain if it’s a repair shoppe, it would look close to, if not better than factory.

    Why are hockey pucks 3"x1"?

Who knows? I assume it had to be some type of rule preventing players from playing like a goalie. Just a guess.

No full definition, though it could have to do with fighting, and concerns of elbows flying regularly. I also suspect it has to do with facial recognition for fans. Remember that our current commissioner for a short time in the dawn of his reign gave players the option to take off the helmet, hoping that stars would do it; alas, one enforcer did it and the experiment was ended. It is different playing with a visor versus full facial protection, as a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was a left winger on the checking line and at 16, I could ditch the bubble and graduate to an Itech RBE 2 when playing Juniors. Upon my re-entry into hockey 12 years ago, I eventually rigged up (with the help of an EQM friend) a similar visor and lower bubble protection that afforded the wide-open vision of a visor with sufficient jaw protection. Losing teeth in juniors and up would’ve been a badge of honour; as an adult playing beer leagues, not so much 😂

So to answer the question, it is likely traditionalists and money driving the rules.

It doesn't make sense, because player and goalie cages look very different.

At one time, not so much. The HM 50 was for both goalie and forward. HM 40 was a forward cat eye and the HM 30 was for goalies.

I am certain that the rule @mth mentioned is one of those archaic rules that the NHLPA and owners haven’t gotten together on changing. It’s just like at one time, a gong was perfectly acceptable to signal a goal; chain link fence was also acceptable to go above the boards for the rink per the rules in the 1950s.

Have you ever seen the story of the guy who bought a custom Lefevre kit and realized after playing with it that it was finally too tall for him ?

The dude went to his local shoe-maker/cobbler and asked him to cut the pads to be shorter ... Man I gotta find these photos again. The job was awful !!!

    Initial Pads :

    No photo description available.

    Modified pads

    That is abysmal.

I am actually very capable of much nicer work; I am paying tribute to Irbe and the quick and dirty repairs from EQMs of days past. Arguably, a thigh rise trim is pretty simple to execute. There is no reason for it to look like that.

Not gonna lie here Bunny, you're lucky I'm not a mod.

I'd ban you so hard for this massacre.

    Flumpalicious!

  7. Pads weren’t as flumpy with rebounds yesterday, but that’s okay. The five hole didn’t give up much. And the beautiful thing? These are flumpy enough without being super heavy like traditionally flumpy pads.

One could argue a cage should bend and be treated as a consumable?

think about crumple zones on a car

I have been working on cage suspension for my upcoming helmet. But cages should still be a crumple zone.

Yea, I don’t think another mask at that price point was tested.

I don’t think another mask at that price point was tested.

With that said, if you assign a dollar value to each mask on here, it’s pretty interesting…

    V6 is an outstanding value?

Bauer 960 won in the ram test for a straight shot and was middle of the road after that. At $900 that’s a deal compared with the $1800+ Pro’s Choice? Victory V8 performed well all around is $800, again major savings Vs the best?

I have taken bombs from my V6. Minimal noise, too. Of course, I wear a Schroeder Mage these days.

Right.  A consumer could just want the best, but most just want what is considered safe or acceptable and relative to that, most affordable.

    Exactly.

Of course there are variables there: what is acceptable to an NHL goaler may not be all that safe (Bishop’s chicklets come to mind), etc., etc.

My Victory V6 has the softest puck to cage sound I have experienced this side of an old combo. I was totally unphased by a shot between the eyes. Of course I customised the padding to fit my head better and it has triple density padding. But this means nothing.

One thing that is not clear, to me, is that there are no values for the vertical axis, so there is no value assigned at any level of the hierarchy.  Clearly, the arrow says "improved" is the ones up top, so the hierarchy is arranged by relative value to one another.  But, if we don't know what the values are vertically...and where, say, the cusp of acceptable vs unacceptable is vertically, then we can't really conclude much other than which helmets are better than others.

So, if #1 is better than #4, but "acceptable" or "safe" starts at say #6, then #4 is still a good choice even thought it is not as good as #1.

Without that info, it's not clear that any goalie with any given helmet should be concerned based on these graphs.

To go along with this, what is the baseline?

I have an uncontrollable urge to throw out a skate save. DEVO is an underappreciated band.

"Freedom of choice is what you've got, freedom from choice is what you want." is one of the greatest lines in a techno jam ever.

    Skate saves are under appreciated.

Yes, MTH! Leather pads that weigh 12 lbs each dry, leather gloves, junk C/A, skates with a full cowling that are sharpened with a flat ground, but we wont get truly back to the way things ought to be until we make skate saves and wear fiberglass masks again. Are we not men or are we Devo? LOL.

Leather gloves are the REAL deal. Check out my latest custom build:

Fighting in the NHL is integral to one to more embarrassing jokes of a policy that they have.

Like fighting or not, I'm not arguing for or against it here. But, given all the emphasis on safety and concussions in the NHL and their rampant crack-down on illegal checks and head contact, it is absurd that they still allow fighting.

In the same period of a game, at the 5:00 mark a guy can make a body check on an opponent, UNINTENTIONALLY make contact with the opponent's head with his shoulder, and get suspended for several games for that hit.  And then, at the 7:00 mark, to avenge that hit, there can be an open fist fight where two guys repeatedly punch each other in the face and then slam each other down to the ice without helmets and all they get is a standing ovation and penalties for fighting and their own video on NHL Youtube.

    It makes zero sense.

It really doesn’t when you get right down to it. If star players’ brains became porridge, I am certain there would be more emphasis to eliminate fighting. As it is, it’s not the stars (except Landeskog) throwing down. McDavid doesn’t want to ruin his manicure.

  15. I do feel that a butterfly pad can be flumpified, @ilyazhito

Think of this: a stiff pad that allows for stops in the butterfly with super-soft rebounds. True hybrid pad. I am engineering this now 😁
