  1. Damn. All of this stuff was good to know. Now, I know their service is annoying and this was probably talked about previously, but what’s your guys’ experience with the medusa harness? I was thinking of getting it so it wouldn’t interfere with my vinyl design/paint job (haven’t decided what way to go yet) but of course protection is always #1

It's because you Full Right bastards are a stain on the goalie community.

    You know I kid. :P

    I know, RIGHT?

Tuesday the 19th my glove and blocker came in! Sadly, I had to go out of town for a tourny so couldn't post till now. So here we go! (FYI, these pics are before I've done any game time OR breaking them in with.)

We'll start with the blocker. It feels really good and super solid. Like I can stop a car with it solid. The ends of the fingers have mesh (also a close up) so the hand is going to breathe really well. Two big changes that are new to me that are going to take some getting use to. 1. The palm of the glove (there's a close up of it) has a grippy texture to it. Wondering how that's going to affect the sliding of the hand on the stick. 2. The gap in the thumb protection to the actual blocker part is smaller than my V7's. On the plus side, there is NO chance of launching the stick like a spear (the knob will not go through that gap) and again, there's a close up.

Now the glove.  Like the blocker, this thing feels solid. Just by the feel of it, it's going to have to be a really hard shot to give a stinger, so that's going to be welcome. Took a close up of the inside padding so you can see how thick it is (and it gets thicker in the palm area).  That padding also has a texture to it so shouldn't be any glove sliding. There are 3 internal straps to mess around with to get the hold just right. The back-hand protection flap has a strap but that in no way, obviously, affects the tightness of the glove to the hand/wrist.

That's all for now. When I get the glove broke in and get some on ice play time with the full setup, will update again with more thoughts.

Absolutely sick. I love the white in the glove, would look even better if there was a dash of white in the blocker. Still looks awesome though. #SolidBlackPadsCrew?

  4. Good read. Really opened my eyes in this particular topic; does this look familiar to you? ?

What’s sickening is battram actually does amazing custom designs. Cheaper gear or not it’s pretty immature to do.

Where are you finding it bulky? The floaters are much more streamlined compared anything else on the market.

More in the arms and where it connects to the arm. Which is fine because the protection is heavily lacking there in my subzero 3, but I need time to break it in of course, and in person the chesty makes you feel bigger than it looks, or that’s just me

This is why I hate glove closure explanations.  I feel like everybody is all over the place.  I always understood 590 as 60-degrees, 580 as 90-degrees, and 600 as 75-degrees (thanks to Lefevre/Koho/Reebok/CCM for massively confusing model numbers).  With 60-degrees being the "baseball" style closure.

All I know is I have a background in baseball and was awesome at catching, but I tried a Reebok 590 (60-degree) and I couldn't get a puck to land in the pocket, worst glove ever (for me).  I then had a Warrior G2 75-degree and my glove hand was never better.  I upgraded to the G3 75-degree, which is still great, but slightly off from the G2.  Someone posted the G2 was more like a Vaughn Velocity while the G3 was more like a CCM (didn't clarify which break).

    Oh well.

Well, I wasn’t even explaining anything, just stating my opinions on the closures like some others, everyone has a different feel for things.

I would say the PVE/SLR strapping works as both a "hybrid" and "butterfly" style. The RRC is meant to be worn tight for pad control, but thats really only the attachment that matters. Old school butterfly pads were meant to be worn loose for complete rotation, but with elastic strapping becoming the norm, they are all pretty interchangeable which is why it works both on an SLR and PVE.

The PVE definitely plays stiffer than a V7 XF. It's modelled off the XR internally, but with flattened knee rolls. Then again, Vaughn doesn't make a "stiff" pad by traditional standards, even the SLR is soft compared to other brands.

Yup. I’ve had mine for a few months now and they don’t have much of a curve on them. The rebounds are pretty consistent too

  8. I currently have the Pro V elite right now and the strapping is pretty much identical to the SLR, but the front face has flattened out knee rolls unlike the slr where it has none, so basically it has butterfly style strapping but performs like a hybrid style pad (I.E. the V7 XF).

  9. Maybe it’s time to introduce myself, I’ll make it brief.

First off, I’ve been in goalie gear for a year and a half and have been playing a little over a year, my dad and I started going to ducks playoffs games in 2014-2015 and I just got obsessed with it. I’ve always been a goalie even in soccer when I was younger so it was easy for me to choose.

I started off in a house league and played on a JV team and it was awful, lots of drama. Anyways, I’ve had the same goalie coach ever since I got full gear and he’s the reason why I’m now playing in the ADHSHL Varsity Tier 2, I joined the team late but plan on going back. I also play for the LA Lions 16U AA but might not be after this season due to lots of drama as well.

Overall, I wish I started playing hockey a lot sooner but there wasn’t a lot of hockey growing up, but it’s still the best thing I’ve ever done.

    Thanks for reading,

    Izzy

Hey everyone, My name is Jake. I'm a new goaltender living in SoCal. Wasn't a huge hockey fan as a kid as I played baseball growing up but my dad worked for a company that got us a lot of tickets, mostly for the Kings. My buddies got me back into hockey during the 2014-2015 season and I've been hooked since. I'm a Ducks fan but I also follow the Avs fairly closely as I'm looking to move to Colorado one day...and I'm a huge Patrick Roy fan. Playing wise, I haven't seen game action just yet, but I've been doing private lessons with a former ECHL goaltender for about 2 months now. Really looking forward to joining a rookie league that starts this July.

Hey man! I’ve seen you on Twitter a lot, I don’t know if you know me but I’m a huge montour fan lol.

I was ripped elsewhere for strongly urging others NOT to use hot water in order to work in a glove. I stand by that.

I partially agree with that. Most I would do it is maybe 2 times.

I mean you could technically be ready for a game with it...

"blocking style" ... is that what they're calling his inability to catch a puck?

Yes, and I was very guilty of that with my CCM Premier, now I actually have to learn how to catch properly with my Vaughn.

  13. Did the keeps method twice on my glove. 5 minutes on the outside where it closes and bended the seams a little so it could naturally close it how I wanted. 5 minutes on the inside of the glove. After the 1st time I put it in the oven at about 180 degrees for about 5 minutes as wide as it can go without touching anything.

After every game and practice I roll up one of my game socks, put it into the pocket and tape it shut. Don’t ever dry it out when it’s shut if you have a lot of time in between games/practices so it stays damp.  After that I really wouldn’t do the keeps method at all just so it doesn’t worsen the protection.

Again, everyone has their preferences and CCM and Vaughn guys are the biggest culprits for brand loyalty. You can get similar feelings between brands, but 590/580 guys swear up and down that theirs is the absolute best.

I went from a LT90 closure, thought it was the best closure and blamed my lack of catching ability on me. Switched to the R/GT and have improved by an enormous amount.

Everyone just needs to find the glove/break that works best for them.

My catching hand has been on and off lol. even then it’s still been able to hold on to some pucks in the pocket.

  15. Trying on a 580 glove at goaliemonkey, I see why people like it but I HATE the feel of pinching your thumb and index finger to close it. Especially when you’re gripping the stick. It has a lot of benefits but I’m trying to get myself to be more adequate at puckplaying. I was never sold on the 590 breaks being the absolute best for that as I’ve heard some people say, I’d like to close it with my whole hand and I get that from my Vaughn glove now.

@southpawtendy48 nice glove, can you comment on the glove break because I am thinking of getting the same one but I was wondering what it compares to. Does it feel like a CCM 590 break or more of a 5500 break?

Thank you! I’ve never worn a 5500 but it’s definitely more of a full hand closure than a CCM 590. Very comfortable, I didn’t have to try to find where everything was inside the glove unlike most Vaughn gloves I’ve tried on. Also very good for stickhandling too, still grips onto the stick really well even if I can’t close it all the way yet.
