I had a strong hatred of the old CCM goalie cuts with the wizard sleeves.

The sleeves were too wide and short.  Wrist opening was like a foot wide, armpits were more like two feet

Couldn't agree more on the jersey cut... I cringed when I saw that picture. 😱

New pads!!!!! Matching blocker is being built, and I will be ordering my first 580 from ccm soon! Bauer was kind enough to include a boot strap and professor strap if I want to add them.

Welcome to the Dark Side (580 users) Your color ways are well chosen too! Anxious to see what you do with the 580 to match-ish. After my experience with 2X Pro I'd consider Hyperlite pads and blocker but would have to go CCM or Lefevre 580 trapper... figured the best way to do it would be solid color... but seemed boring. Your set could change my mind.

As for the CRS bootstrap... I didn't have much luck with them. So much give in the elastic that it was no real difference from having nothing at all. Good news is if you like a boot strap and wanted something more solid a attachment any mushroom ended leather will do the trick.

@coopaloop1234... have room for one more if you'd care to devote yourself to the 580.

New Bauer Pro Knee Guards, I was waiting for an upgrade since the Yellow Supremes and got it. Different materials, looks like it's well made, more padding, and more space for your knee. Looks like it well hold well too.

Interesting they did away with the anchor strap. Have you had them out yet? Hold up as well as the previous gen?

I was getting there.  I'm 5'10" and was always one of those old-school, heels 12" outside the crease, kill-em-with-quickness kinds of goaltenders.  I made up for a lack of actual goaltending talent with honestly pretty elite skating, and I was a total rubber band in my teenage year and early 20s and relied on that to save me in situations where I had a lot of ground to cover.  I play a more reserved style now, but in those scrambles like the one where I got hurt, my brain still seems to think I can do the things I did during my high school and college days, and tries to put limbs in front of pucks to make stops I don't really have any business making.

I went to a couple public skates while I was doing all of my rehab and felt 0 pain.  I was using the boards as my post for entries and exits, skating all over the crease, dropping into extended saves from a standing position - all of it felt totally fine.  But it was in that moment where instinct kicked in and I tried to get something, anything, in front of that puck, that I got hurt.  And that's the problem.  I can play under control the vast majority of the time, but I'm not confident I won't try to battle and do something stupid again even if I get back to a point where I'm pain free.  There's real damage in there, and it's just not worth the risk anymore.

Sorry to hear about the hips. Oddly my issue is the opposite... I can do internal rotation all day... butterfly etc is fine... it's external that is awful. So opening up for a good t-push is less than textbook. But is what it is. I've had to adjust a bit to accommodate the issues (even post surgery)... more patient on my feet... more shuffles. But it works. Totally understand what you're feeling though. Not cringing pain all the time... but never really goes away.

I have about 10 years on you... but also with a set of twins that keep my wife and I running around. At some point the pain will win... I'll have to get replacements... and probably hang them up for something less stressful on all the joints from the waist down. Father time remains undefeated.

NIce set! I opted to for extra lower calf elastic and boot strap as well (although mine is below heel) and found that this setup works well for those of us who are on the back 9 of their playing days. Gives the tight to leg feel we grew up with (similar to EFlex line) but the performance of a modern pad.

  6. To further @bildeer... and simply for the sake of offering my own experience as it's already summed up well... I've tried other break angles but 580 just feels right on my hand AND the pocket placement it part of my muscle memory. Certainly something that could be relearned given enough reps, but playing beer league now there's no hope of ever getting that much practice time in. My 2X Pro glove (590ish break) just had the pocket push outward and down from where I was used to. So silly as this may sound I actually had complete misses because my pocket wasn't where I expected it to be given my hand positioning; up higher and closer to my body. Again this could be changed up with hand positioning and enough reps to get 580 out of my mind (which at my age would be 10,000+.) Certainly worth trying as everything old becomes new again.

  7. @raidersgoalie I can't speak from first hand experience with their whole product line... but I LOVE my c/a unit. The thing is a tank and has held up really well. The attention to detail that others mention holds true on my piece. They have the right materials in the right place to keep it from wearing prematurely, and foams that haven't broken down either. Sure it's not the lightest on the market... but I'm happy to sacrifice a few ounces for a unit that lasts. I can't imagine that the rest of their catalog would be any different.

    Blocker

I went with the full carbon face, which is an option on the customizer.  Vaughn blockers aren't known for having the biggest pop, but this thing feels extremely firm on the face.  I'm not expecting Bauer-like rebounds but I'm hoping they'll still find their way to the corners easily.  I custom-specced a firm & rigid side board.  I'm unsure exactly what material Vaughn used, but it's solid and square, unlike what I've seen in some other social media posts with the stock side board.  Very happy with it so far.

A comparison of the board angles.  Pretty similar in feel from the back of the hand down, but the V9 is steeper above the hand.  When I think about box control I believe this should add some additional coverage toward the top of the net, especially in close.

    542793476_Blockeranglecomparison.thumb.jpg.a62c78b05f9945e27ba37b52d89d1159.jpg

Interestingly it's slightly taller than my XLT blocker despite the more aggressive angle.

    1329784987_Blockercomparison.thumb.JPG.ab25c8f9643f081ec4876da52f3b588d.JPG

I was somewhat worried about the wrist mobility of the V9 blocker after trying on the offshore version in store, but I'm pleased to say the mobility in this one is excellent.  The padding on the back of the hand is thick and keeps the blocker firmly connected to my hand, unlike the XLT which is pretty loose.

    1420446123_Blockercuff.thumb.jpg.8b21f4893e2b2409729b170d511d1f51.jpg

I only ever dabbled in Vaughn gear... had a quick stint with V3s... entirely stock. Oddly I found the blocker the only piece that I actually liked all that much. At the time I recall it wasn't overly light or anything... but I think like you mentioned that balance of it just worked. So often people get wrapped around the axle about weight... but as you described in your leg pad summary... it's more about where that weight is placed.

Figured I’d get in on the action. True 12.2 w/ L87 graphic ordered last week. Estimated around Labor Day. Here’s what I went with:

    Pads

    -32+1

    -single / single break

    -stiff face

    -soft boot

-recessed knee w single leather below knee strap

-tight fit FRS w 2” nylon calf strap

-behind heel leather strap (might ultimately remove but wanted to test)

-HD foam toe attachment w skate lace (have a pair of Prolaces x TGN hybrids that I’ll switch to if need be)

    Glove

-590 (coming from 600 Eflex3 pro return. Been getting some pop outs when holding upright so figured this was a good next step)

-game ready w extra (similar to D30 I’m told)

    -double T w/ nylon

    -webbing at wrist

    -sure grip palm

    Blocker

    -595 (bindingless)

    -half cuff

    -straight finger protection

    -tight fit

    -centered

    -sure grip palm

    Design/Pics:

-I struggled between 12.2 graphic and retro but ultimately loved the clean lines w L87

-I sub a lot still, no set team colors per se, so I figured I’d opt for a neutral colorway with a good accent color or two

They look fantastic... will always wish I picked up an L87 set when branded Lefevbre just to have the "L" on the thigh... still think they should with these anyway... hell maybe even "T". Specs are damn near spot on too. 580 would make them perfect. Anxious to hear more about them once you have them. How far are is their lead time? Last I head it was the longest of anyone right now.

The medium Bauer pads don’t look like a 34+1 for me , I took pads side by side at the store with hyperlite medium Bauer is 33+1 brians but large Bauer is bigger than a 34+1  from Brian’s. Bauer write large 35+ Now on thé pads they don’t said if they are +1 or +2 ... maybe we can change something on tight rise now , my friend is a director in a big store in Montréal, he send a email to Bauer rep we waiting the answer

Good deal. By all means share whatever the reply from the Bauer Rep is. It's my understanding that they don't change thigh rise... just is what it is (likely improves efficiency in production.)

For me at 20.5 I drop in the high end of the knee block with medium and the large is the perfect fit but I’m scared of the high tight rise , with my old medium 2xpro the butterfly was hard to close but my mobility was soooo great

Do you mean hard to close as in you have a narrow butterfly and the 2X Pro was too firm and straight at the top? If so... check out Hyperlite. Much more of an S shape than 2X Pro. (Probably something you can blur lines with in a ProCustom set if you want other facets of US construction.)

Not a Bauer expert, but I can chip in here.

    1) these look like the pro.  Giveaway for me is the name embroidery patch on the inside top thigh rise and the Stabilislide knee block.

    2) Leg channel looks fine. All the straps are there.  Only thing possibly missing is the Tune Fit Connect/Professor strap but that may not have been specced on the original order.

    3) Sounds about right, you could probably pull off a Small. I'm in the same size range and would purchase a small.  I think @BadAngle41 and @ZeroGravitas are the same size and wore Small.

Here's a back pic of the 3S, I think the key features you're looking for to distinguish the two lines are the Stabilislide knee block and the CORTech skin on the front.

Your pic has the Stabilislide as it is a one piece construction. The 3S pictured below has the traditional three piece construction with the knee wing, riser, and landing pad.

Looking more into newer models that need a little bit of repaired stitching and such as well as stuff put on sale by SidelineSwap this week. Partly because I want to test some different gear to better decide what I want this upcoming season

I've been pretty fortunate lately when flipping gear... albeit unintentional. The 2X Pro as a complete set just didn't work as well for me as I'd hoped and I was able to sell on Sideline Swap literally right before COVID hit. They were pretty lightly used and full custom... so I ended up not losing much on them. Enough in fact to pay for a full Axis set (2 gloves) and a new pair of HPG14A. That however is NOT the norm... especially in our current situation with so many guys (and kids) not on the ice as much as they would usually be.

@Chenner29 has seen his first Lefevre set bounce around since they left his house... not sure if he can comment on pricing. Also not sure what you'd be planning on adding to a set to make any money off them. If it's just magic eraser personally I don't think it's worth your time.

Didn't like the fact he kept Miller in for over 6 goals. It clearly wasn't his night. Dude is a bum of a coach and so is our gm.

As much as I don't blame Gibson for being frustrated, it almost like he looks like he couldn't give less of a shit, he's had a lot of stretches where he's been like that, and I'm not a fan.. or he's been dealing with an undisclosed injury, seeing as he just got put on DTD.

I don't know about you... but I never liked getting pulled. Some days it was me and I was hurting the team... other nights it was a complete lack of help. Either way I was always anxious to get that next shot and stop it. A coach sometimes leaves a guy in because he knows his compete level is there and what's going in isn't on him... or he has confidence in him to pull himself out. But in a shortened season like this... every game matters.

Also... on Gibson... and I can't say I've seen too many of his games... but it's a fine line to walk sometimes. You have to be mentally strong enough to shake off a goal (even a bad one)... stay even keeled. Process the play... think about what you could maybe have done differently... then move on. But when you do the same thing and your team just isn't winning... you get some people saying that it looks like you don't care. Maybe he's missing a bit of the spring in his step that he has when he's on fire... and you may be 100% right that he was just battling through some sort of strain that has now landed him on DTD status. Just not sure it's fair to say he looks like he doesn't care.

So I finally played in goal again at my weekly ball hockey outing. I did use a stand-up heavy methodology, keeping my hands out front, narrow stance and good knee bend. Ready to use the stick on low shots. I used lot of poke checking, paddle-down play, also. I had to be sure when I was going down that it was not going to leave me stranded. Played angles aggressively when no passing option was available. Worked well and I played well.

Jut reading through this topic and while I'm going well past 1980 here... look at that boot flex... how wrenched down those pads are to Guy's skate... and the puck foils. I truly feel for anyone who didn't get to experience Heaton Pro 90z.

Just figured I'd put this here for safe keeping.

    Overview:

Ultrasonic Pads: Custom specs include XL size, added leather straps for that tight feel, soft core, no knee elastic, professor strap, and added pro laces armor and a leather strap that I loop through the lacing inside the pad to go through the lundy loop of my skates.

Ultrasonic Blocker: A blocker IS NOT just a blocker. To give me some added feel, I use a golf glove underneath to really make it feel like it is a part of my hand and not just an extension. Works like a charm!

Ultrasonic Glove: Game ready, nylon wrist strap, double T with nylon lacing in between but skate lace on the outside for added sight when tracking the puck.

Ultrasonic Stick: 27" paddle, P34 Curve for better puck handling, rounded paddle for better feel. I use a tennis overgrip for my grips because they're more inexpensive (broke college student) but they also provide me a better feel. Tape a knob underneath that on my grip for more size and stability in my stance.

Bauer 960 Helmet: Painted myself, pictured is a Bauer cat eye but I now use an open mouth cat eye from goalieparts.com. Highly recommend. I use Kova's open backplate straps and they're insanely high quality.

True One-Piece Skates: Love these things to death but they're wearing down quickly. White toe cap for added sty points. Don't use the insole they provide, I just use the red one that normally goes underneath it.

CCM Axis 1.9 Pants: Great for tucking your chest protector, highly recommend. That's all there is to it.

Bauer 2X Pro Chest Protector: Not much to say other than it's the best C&A I've EVER used, coming from someone who wore Vaughn exclusively up until last season.

OTHER ACCESSORIES: Bauer 1X Knee Guards and Garter Belt, Kova Suspenders, Roughneck Neck Guard, Bauer Cut Protective Socks, Vaughn V6 Goalie Cup.

TL;DR: MODIFY YOUR GEAR TO BEST SUIT YOUR NEEDS AS A GOALIE

I gotta see some pics to go along with your Ultrasonic Pads summary... also elaborate on the why for each.

I have no doubt it's stiffer than Maltese... but can you expand on your specs and how it feels if you've been able to hit the ice with it? Did you opt for gel foam (pretty sure they use Zoom Bang)? Standard width on the clavicle?

First Post here....I came upon this thread after suffering what I feel was a pretty serious hip injury today in net.  I wanted to post both for answers to some of the questions I've seen, and also to ask - ultimately saving this thread and revisiting it for others' follow ups.

I've had some hip problems after I turned 30 from playing goal later in life, sprint training, and squats (other sports).  I ended up going up to the Lahey Clinic/Hospital in Lexington, MA, and after a couple of visits and scans, it was decided that I had been suffering from impingement.  I ended up getting the Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI) surgery.  The surgeon told me it took way longer once he saw what was going on in there.  They did it arthroscopically from anterior like a previous poster.  It took almost 6 hours and they cleaned out some cartilage, re attached the labrum, and shaved down the bone to a better shape.  That was in April of 2015.  Within months, pain still didnt go away and it never really "took".

I've been holding off total hip replacement as I'm 38 now and I've been told to hold off as long as I can.  I've been playing a lot of goal lately and a lot of beach doubles volleyball in the summer, and my hip is just throbbing 24/7.  Luckily the hospital network our insurance is in, happens to be the best hip surgeons in the area and cost will be pretty much covered - so I've been thinking about getting the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR).  Using the actual UK equipment and procedure, I'm wondering what goaltenders have actually been able to continue on playing net after a BHR.  I hear both sides as far as total hip - some still can play, some cant strap on pads and butterfly at all and have to play out.  I want to play goal or nothing.  My injury today forced me to make an immediate appointment with hip specialist, and going to weigh options.

Bottom line for me - the FAI isn't going to hold up for a goaltender.  If there's cartilage they're cleaning out, it's game over.  A lot of these docs don't REALLY get it for our position.  The hip joint (even if you do all the mobility exercises) is so tight, you'll never get cartilage back in there and grow.  Also, most likely, the labrum will re-tear, and the bone shave will actually cause new spurts from bone scaring.  It seems like total hip, or BHR is the only way to go, and I'm hoping I can get away with a BHR and play goal in full force.  That's what I'd like to ask/add to the conversation and I wish everyone luck.  Please keep this thread alive with results or stories of pro's who've been able to play high level with such invasive and structurally altering procedures.

Interesting thought about BHR. I'm more-less in a similar boat after having had my FAI back in 2018. The join itself has that throbbing you describe as well as what feel like some tears even though it was also cleaned up like yours was. I went in to see my ortho again a little over a month ago... his comment was that he had cleaned out so much... the only thing worth doing surgery again for me would be replacement.

There are options however for simply trying to reduce inflammation... cortisone and biologics. The biologics being PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or Stem Cell injections. Per my guy... either could help... but there is little data to support the effectiveness... and consequently it'll likely be a decent out of pocket expense. Between the unknown effectiveness and cost... I have been considering getting the cortisone. If it helps calm the inflammation and I still have a decent amount of pain... I'll know it's something more... play until I can't... and maybe end my career between the pipes.

I know some guys have played with replacements... but it's my understanding (and I could be wrong on this) that it's like you're given a brand new set of tires... albeit the last set you'll get. Playing goal on them is essentially like doing burnouts... and I'm too young to put too much needless wear and tear on them.

Perhaps a custom spec... but interesting (and thank you for zooming in) no QMSS on that set. Personally I've found QMSS on my Axis to be more difficult to dial in and keep consistent from skate to skate. I think it could benefit from a doubled up elastic... maybe something to mod later.
