Jake Allen with a new mask last week-end. I usually like simple mask paintjobs, but not sure about this one. I would have added a couple of stripes on the sides and I would have make the window white.

    Something like that.

I don't recall seeing many non-white windows in the cage.  Very interesting.

I have been looking for new pads and have some ideas but I would like more input. The pads/gloves/blockers that I have been looking at are, Bauer M5pros, Bauer Hyperlite 2s, CCM Axis 2.9s, and Brians Optik X3s. Which one of these works best for a shorter conservative goalie who makes saves by being in position and not by flailing around, or are there any others?

I agree with Coop that comfort is key.  Don't worry about certain gear dictating how you play, that's not how it works.  You can play any way in any gear.

Gloves and blocker especially are all about feel.  The wrong glove in comfort is going to be all but impossible to come around too.   So go for feel there.

For pads, the most significant thing to think about is how much flex you want, soft vs. stiff.  Aside from that, you're going to find similar versions of the same thing in terms of strapping and toe ties across brands, more or less.

I wrapped this (with okay quality material) and even added some stars under the brushed gold aluminum. I have a ways to go to before I start charging money, but here goes, an asymmetrical design in my high school colors.

    Nice work.   Thanks for sharing.

You'll look back on this in 10 years and love it.

I like your (unintentional?) white window in the cage.

Just saw another AHL goalie tonight with a stock Mach no wrist strap.

Nice. It's a great glove.  I love it.

My hypothesis is still, given however many goalies,  pros or like us, try it stock, the number of goalies who go "nah" is way higher than the number who go "yes."

If it's true that Shadow has a stock wrist strap, this is huge support for my hypothesis.

It’s so loose it barely touches my wrist but what does is honestly kind of nice because it gives a little bit of padding. C55A61F6-F78C-480E-B53A-821D6DA2501F.thumb.jpeg.5dc3154edffa984e789d06942df5250a.jpeg

But not sure if I could even cut it out anyway because of how Bauer sewed it in. It is sown to the palm then the loop for the hand strap is sown to it. image.thumb.jpg.1e503b09bfc9f971e3224779961d17b7.jpg

That creamy fuzzy underneath part looks so comfy.

See that I take off but at the same time I don’t have to cut anything and I can always put it back on if I at some point want it

True, especially nowadays.  Resale value would be wiped with it cut out too, most likely.   I guess it just seems like a bulky, invasive thing that touches you a lot for something that is not being used in its intended, functional way.

Probably won’t be cutting it out but have definitely thought about it.

That’s exactly what happened when I got my Mach got used to not having a wrist strap now I can’t use it.

That's surprising, at that point it's like a velcro knee wing when you put the knee strap down to the calf area.

Hate this argument... we are not pro goalies. How many pros use sticks that are a current model? Yes, "change for the sake of change" exists and retail release calendars force brands to change things... but just because pros don't like something doesn't mean it's not good innovation or better for average goalies.

I actually agree with you here, fully.

I only separated pros from us because, well, we watch them on TV getting paid to do what we spend money to do for fun and that's not nothing.

But let's take that separation away so it's not confused as an argument point:

-how many users of stock Mach gloves have rejected it due to the absence of a wrist strap?

The answer to that question speaks to my argument, which is that Bauer failed on that aspect of the glove, which is further supported by them bringing back a wrist strap in Generation 2 of the glove.

I have no ill will or sour grapes against them for it, in fact, I'm waiting for the opportunity to throw them $3k+ on a custom Shadow set.  I can't wait.

I support innovation, both successes and fails.

It’s just really loose so that it doesn’t touch my wrist

Woah, you mean it's there and you just leave it loose and floppy? Insane.

I’ve seen a couple AHL goalies wearing a Mach without a wrist strap.

And the Mach was my favorite glove until I just got a Vapor90 and still don’t use the wrist strap on the Vapor90.

Nice, is it easily removable on the Vapor90?

Obviously I'm not going to be 100% right on this, but I think that Vasilevsky is the only NHL guy to be using a stock Mach glove.

    I'm basing that off of:

    1. No wrist strap flopping around
    2. The backhand being the same as Mach catchers.

I think most guys are still using Ultrasonic or 2S builds and the backhands reflect that.

Curious thing about Vasy is that he's still using a US blocker based off of the wrist cuff.

Did you M5 actually fall off your hand? Even before using the zip tie method I never had the glove actually come off.

Sure felt like it some days though.

It came off once reaching to my left on the ice for a cover and was going to fly off on a glove save but I managed to turn my hand upward to fight the gravity, so to speak, and kept it on about halfway.  Both happened within a week or so early on and it was the Aha Moment I needed to say "ok, this change sucks."

Downgrade... Mach is Bauer's best glove to date! People are too reluctant to change

Haha, or conversely, maybe some people are excessively embracing of change?

How many pros are using a stock Mach glove without a wrist strap? How many goalies on here have bought a stock Mach glove and said "Yes, finally, this is my glove"?

Speaking for myself, I've used 100% Vaughn since I started playing at age 12 and did so for 29 years straight, The Bauer Mach line was exactly what I needed to see to get me out of Vaughn.  I'm very dialed in to what I like and what works but also how I wanted to change as a goalie. I got my first set and my response was "Yes, finally, this is my line of gear, however........."

The nature of change is that some change fails, and that's fine. I don't think the sensation of "my glove constantly feels like it is going to fly off of my hand" or the experience of my glove actually flying off my hand makes me, personally reluctant to change, it just makes me justifiably critical of this particular change.

I need to say I am new to hockey and bought my first leg pads this summer, but I've been having a hell of a time finding the "right" leg pad size.

I bought some Bauer GSX in Large, but they felt too tall in the thigh. So I bought some Bauer Vapor 3X in Medium, and the height feels so much better. There is only a 1" difference in total height, but the knee block height is very similar and in both pads, my knee lands on the block. So, I kept the mediums and have been playing well.

However, even though my knee still lands on the block, I noticed that it lands in the upper half of the block. I wanted to get my knee more centered (and get better 5 hole coverage) by getting the pad to sit higher, so I added a professor strap. However, I think it had the opposite effect. I'm now consistently landing on the top 25% of the knee block and my knee guard hangs off of it. Note that I still land on the block, just towards the edge and not in the center. I've never landed on the ground, always the block.

Why would this happen? I'm guessing my pads normally slide up a bit when I go into the butterfly, and keeping them tighter with a professor strap prevents this, cause my knee to land higher on the block?

More importantly, is any of this a problem? When people say they fall "off" the knee block, do they mean literally off?

TLDR: I plan to remove the professor strap because it worsens the issue and creates a bigger 5 hole, but I know my knee will still not be in the center of the block, and I'm not sure if this is a problem as long as I still always land on the block.

There's so much to unpack here and many of us can help, but first, can you post pics of the leg channels so we can see how the strap was installed and how it looks both open and closed as it would be on your leg?

To answer one of your questions: yes, some people literally land off the knee block, knee to ice.  This can happen if pads are too big, too small, or too loose.

Lefevre: Goalies, you ever wanted your ankles to be latch locked into place so they do not move AT ALL and have your skates go up to your knees so you don't need knee pads anymore?

    Goalies: No.

Goalies: Uhhhhhhh.  Isn't Bauer the company that invents new problems and solves them against our wishes?
