Fuhr isn't a big dude. Matter of fact, a lot of NHL goalies were under 6' then.

He also used the flexible knee/entire pad with high thigh rise.

I wish I had some pictures to share of when he was in juniors, but my dad only has stories I can't put into pictures. I'll have to ask some time and transcribe. The only anecdote I can recall is that he would specifically never take off his mask, allegedly for race reasons so people would be less likely to know he wasn't white.

I think he said that in his book too. Sad to think that's how it was.

My kid played against a little dude this weekend who had a Kesh on under his hockey helmet. Thought that was awesome to see. There have been dozens of little guys of all backgrounds on the teams here in NJ. Thankful guys like Grant Fuhr endured the challenges they did so that all these kids (and parents) are not hesitant to sign up for hockey. If you think about it, the kids don't give a hoot what the other kids look like or do outside the rink.

Yes it did! The Blue and Orange DnR pads from 90 were awesome looking, and that nylon at the top gives a false sense of how tall those pads were, so not sure what happened there.....unless those were the same pads as the year before just dyed.

Also, I’m shocked that nobody brought up his 91/92 DnR Quantum pads. He wore them during the 91 playoffs, and the start of his career in Toronto.

I used to own a pair of junior DnR pads....and they rocked! Had the white DnR Blocker, but never saw a DnR catcher in person.

I have met Fuhr, and he is a super nice and kind fellow. His family were top notch as well. I actually sent him a message to thank him for that day. I shook his hand and said Thank You for being the hero I knew you were as a player....but also as a person.

Thank you all for posting and putting this site up. Brought me back to the late 80’s and my love for his style and gear!

As a youngin' during Fuhr's peak in the NHL - he was the ultimate cool goalie to me.

I'd love to meet him. Living in Philly isn't really in his neighborhood. If I ever do get the chance to talk to him; he'll regret being so nice after I ask 1000's of nerdy gear questions to him. ha ha

Hard too to track his gear then like today. We only had hockey cards and Pannini sticker books that came out annually and could use old stock photos. Hockey Digest's black and white pictures left a lot to desire.

Hockey News was the place to go. But their color pics were limited. Also for me, THN was not on the local magazine racks in Philly.

Yeah, he was heading back to his room at the moment I met him, this was after walking by him and saying holy he looks familiar...and my band mate goes “That’s cause it’s Grant Fuhr!” I ran after him for that handshake and I said verbatim “Hello Mr Fuhr, May I shake your hand?(he said yes and we did) I don’t want anything from you sir, but to say thank you for being such an amazing hero to me. I don’t want to bother you but had to come say hello and thank you!”. He was very humble and gracious. 
 

The best part was knowing that ALL hotel staff at this Casino I was playing on the weekend of a tourney he was playing in back in 2003. He was there with Dino Cicerrelli who was an amazing player, but just a narcissistic ego centric person. Sending food back due to plating and other ridiculous things, and never tipped but was rude. They all loved not only Gran Fuhr, but also his family that he had with him. They were all class acts!

I hear ya as I was just 10 when he beat Hextall(another amazing character and player) in 87. Watching those games recently again, was absolutely amazing! He WAS THAT GOOD AND FAST! If not for Gretzky, he would’ve gotten a Conn Smythe as well, cause he had an amazing record with Edmonton, while being a workhorse! 75 games that year in 88 and was second in Hart voting to Mario Lemieux. He won the Vezina during a time when the only goalie that was under 3.00gaa was Roy behind one of the best defensive teams at that time as well. 
 

Ed onion should’ve won 5 straight......but that one goal! Lol. Man those games were fun to watch and a ton of skill was on display! Fast too! Brian Propp could fly, as Messier did too. Just awesome, and seeing all of Fuhr’s late 80’s gear In all those series, all star games, and Canada Cup and The 87 Rendeyvous series against the Russians......man....Fuhr was the man!

I'm a big Fuhr guy too, he was the reason I started playing. Have his original book from the 80's, and met him and got my copy of his new book signed.

Anyone have any idea what catcher he is wearing here? To me looks Vaughn-ish but with a weird solid pocket.

I think it’s a CCM glove. I’m guessing,  it he did use some different stuff through out his career, but it looks like a CCM to me. Don’t bet money on that answer though lol.

I have to get that book again! He is still my favourite, and during this pandemic here in Ontario they were playing all the cup games from back in the day. No wonder Gretzky said he was the best in the world, as for a definite two or three years...,he was untouchable. 
 

Always wondered what kind of numbers he would’ve had if he played behind the defence that Roy had in Montreal, that was a great defensive team in a very offence first era! Man the memories!

Yep, that is a CCM glove and John Brown pads.  He eventually went to the all CCM setup shortly after this.

Interesting thought. Both teams won cups with their respective goalies. Two different teams, different goalies... same results. Cups and HOF.

Yes I agree, however Edmonton was a much bigger offensive team. Their defence was ok....but compared to the three Jennings trophies, and then Vezina wins in Montreal, I’m just curious to see if Fuhr and Roy would’ve been the same as the other if they had switched teams. Just a fantasy question of course.

I think Fuhr would’ve been fantastic on that 86 team and I wish that Steve Smith goal hadn’t happened in 86, as that would’ve been possibly 5 straight cups. Unless Roy could’ve held off Edmonton’s offence, and would the defence on Montreal been able to compete with Edmonton’s attack. 
 

just one of those things I’ve always wondered. However, I do agree that there are many ways to win a cup.
