Funny enough we were just talking about this today

I just put PPF on my Px3 this morning, took me maybe 15 mins between both pads?  I was chatting with @TheGoalNet and @BadAngle41 at the same time, they can check the timing

I've found that not all PPF is the same.

This is what I've found to work best.  It's literally peel, stick, and trim.  This product on my 20.2 is still going strong a year later:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VG6QYS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I mistakenly bought a big roll of Vvivid PPF that did not wrap around the edges as well.  The film feels noticeably thicker, which is probably why.  It may still work but probably needs some extra steps (priming/cleaning/heating etc).

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GOWILOO?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

    My top 3:

    • Have the PPF wrap around the corner.  Any exposed edges on the flat sliding surface will eventually peel.  If you curve the PPF around the application surface it should last longer (see * below)
      • Get a good pair of small, sharp scissors as they will be a lot easier to handle in the tighter corners
    • It will stick best to Jenpro/Clarino and does not stick well to nylon.
      • I have not tried it on Speedskin, but I believe @BadAngle41 has
    • You really only need to do the knee and calf wings.  Anything else is overkill

    * - have the PPF wrap just below the seam where the nylon and jenpro meet

    image.thumb.png.06124043a2d9e53863de6f47f2b20678.png

It's also a good practice to line up the straight factory cut edge on the film roll to the inner gusset on your pads where you start.  Peel a little, stick it, push out air bubbles, and slowly peel as you get more of the PPF onto the pad.  This makes the material easier to manage and keeps it from bunching up and sticking to itself.

    image.thumb.png.bad8049a70c6795bea239300f86f00c9.png

Good luck, hope this helps - reach out via PM or whatever if you have questions

Can second this, too much PPF gets too crazy.

Im in a Graf PeakSpeed Pro. They are super light, but there isnt enough outside ankle support and I starting to feel like im just wearing sloppy hightop basketball shoes. I have a pair or Ultrasonics and Konekts on order to try on side by side at home, raw.  The breakage in clips, the lack of toe toe stability across the top of the foot and the thinner profile tounge has me already thinking Konekts wont be for me.

Have to be blunt, doesn't sound like you are going into this with an open mind?

No it doesn’t get any light at all. It’s a closed off room, with hot pipes that go through it, that produces the warmness of the room. I have not no. Only in that room.

One of the reasons I thought is maybe because of the chemicals they use for the ice because I didn’t wipe them dry after ice times

Wonder if it is something with the ice conditions itself? I am sorry you are experiencing this. It does suck.

It is a known issue and something that shouldn't exist in the future though

So, is there a Grand list of mods these skates need to make it work for the average goalie or what?

Im going to get fitted for a pair tomorrow, but reading through all the treads here and there, it seems to be at least FOUR major mods are mandatory to make these a reliable and comfortable skate going forward....

Like any pair of skates, it depends on your feet.

Other than playing with the buckle tightness on the lower buckle, I have done 0 mods. The more "unique" your feet are, the more likely you are to have to do some mods.

What skates are you wearing now? Do you have any issues with them and the fit?

@TheGoalNet does it feel like there’s a gap in the plastic on your single tee 591 similar to any of your other single tee ccms?

pics? Don't follow what you're referring to

  6. Unfortunately, the pre-Mach Bauer pads do you have  yellowing issue. Also, being that those are Pro stock, it's possible that Elvis has an even earlier skin and the pads might be extra bad toward yellowing. Bauer has worked on this with every generation.

Does the room you store these in get a lot of sun light? Every let them dry outside?

I know a lot of guys are using the mach and a few in the hyperlite but a lot of others are just skinned to look like the newest sticks

This is not unique to Bauer or goalies... Pros don't like change. Players and goalies of all brands are using old models skinned as new ones. This does not mean an NXG is better than a Mach, it means a guy got used to the feel of NXG and didn't feel like changing to save 30g.

This got me to do some digging and I wanted to see how the average distribution of Gear among the pros stacks up with guys in the Top and bottom 10 of GSAA.

Currently the breakdown among pads is more or less identical to gloves, so most guys use complete sets. Saying that the distribution looks like this:

    Capture3.thumb.JPG.1dbceb4b2fd47d426845e62f609a8913.JPG

The only thing that stuck out to me was just how far CCM dropped. So much that they're below Brians now. A brand I always considered as "the unique" brand to be wearing in the NHL.

Looking at the top 10 GSSA we have:

    True 30% :
    Hellebuyck
    Georgiev
    Husso

    Bauer 40% :
    Ullmark
    Sorokin
    Thompson
    Oettinger

    Brians 20% :
    Hart
    Shesterkin

    CCM 10% :
    Skinner

    Vaughn 0%:
    N/A

Bauer and True somewhat trade places, where CCM is over represented and Vaughn just flat out disappears.

Now, looking at the bottom 10 GSAA, we have:

    True 30%
    Gibson
    Bobrovsky
    Comrie

    Bauer 10% :
    Merzlikins

    Brians 0%:
    N/A

    CCM 20%:
    Demko
    Markstrom

    Vaughn 40% :
    Campbell
    Nedeljkovic
Peterson (Kaleta on this list lol)
    Quick

True's percentage stays the same, Bauer drops off drastically, and Vaughn comes roaring in to take the crown.

Keep in mind this breakdown means absolutely fuck all, but, it still is interesting to see how they compare to the average distribution league wide.

Andersen was the face of Bauer early on I believe. I remember the commercials.

Correct, he switched in Ana and Bauer got a Christmas present when Lou traded for him in TO

up and coming goalie, hot new product, and hockey's biggest market was finally good again

Top 5 is tricky. I'd go:

    - Vasilevskiy (obvious #1)
    - Merzlikins (solely due to his custom graphics)
    - Oettinger (new hot shot goalie in the game, recency bias helps)
    - Sorokin (dude suffers from the Islanders effect of being third in his market. all white pads don't help either, but him and Shesterkin's Top Goalie duel of NY is marketable).
    - *insert literally anyone else*

The list you have has a lot of journeymen goalies, or guys that we may adore, but I would call it tough to say they're influential in either a marketing aspect, or a position aspect.

Talbot, Anderson, and Reimer all fit this definition for me.

Holy shit! We agree on something...

I would have Ullmark as a clear 5th though. His posts always seem popular on Instagram, he plays in a major US market, he's European, and he usually has very unique custom pads. Other than like winning a Vezina, there are not many boxes he does not check.

Also surprised no one else mentioned Sorokin, tons of interest in him on IG.

    - Spencer Martin - (Vancouver Canucks)
    - Elvis Merzlikins - (Columbus Blue Jackets)
    - Jake Oettinger - (Dallas Stars)
    - James Reimer - (San Jose Sharks)
    - Ilya Sorokin - (New York Islanders)
    - Cam Talbot - (Ottawa Senators)
    - Logan Thompson - (Vegas Golden Knights)

First time on the ice with the Mach retail pads.  First observation as soon as I hit the ice, holy shit you guys weren’t kidding about the sliding.  Pads stuck to the ice very badly.  Part of it was because of bad ice right now, but still.  My friend in the other net had no problems sliding in his Warriors.  That took a lot to get used to.  Other than that, they functioned perfectly.

Another comment I saw on retail was to do with the weird shaped calf shell.  I did not notice it once while playing surprisingly.  Glove and blocker were excellent, glove fully broken in and easy to get used to.  Couple other observations, made one save that definitely had to do with the knee block and calf shell being directly attached.  Thought I was beat under the pad and was able to kick out the puck anyway.

coming from XL Ultrasonics, these fit better slightly as far as 5 hole closure, which is great.  Stopped one 5 hole shot that got past my stick and hit the thigh rises of the pad which made me feel great with them.

Seriously, seems like they would want to keep them quite different.

So we're closer to being like ALLL Bauer pads for the past 6 years in a row is the way to go, just one cookie cutter leg channel after another.

This comment is pretty far off the mark.

You are absolutely correct that the differences between the lines are getting smaller and smaller. Especially with customization, you can basically an EFLex that is an Axis 2 with Knee rolls. Brian's will do the same. Vaughn's stiff pads are not very stiff. Most brands are going with 1 style boot break, 1 strapping set up, and then a choice of stiffness profile and knees rolls or not.

Where you should do a bit more homework is on Bauer. Bauer probably has the biggest difference between lines right now. Just because 1 lines does not have knee rolls does not mean a thing.

Bauer has 2 completely different boot break angles, strapping set ups, knee block flex profiles, calf plate flex profiles, and there is a major difference in comparing their stiffness. This does not get into the difference with the blockers and gloves.

Why is everyone generally going to 1 basic pad setup? People basically want the same things these days.

All I can say is when I close the glove my thumb meets my fingers and it just feels super natural! I'll have to try some 600 break gloves next time I'm at the shop. So far I like the Sherwood one for now in comparison to my old Heaton one. :) Way more control as well.

IMO, I find 600 the least consistent brand to brand. I would make make sure you try on CCM, Bauer, True, and Vaughn if you want that glove. You might like an SLR, but hate a True sort of thing.

I love the Bauer Supreme break. I have tried and struggle to use a CCM600 or a Vaughn SLR

  15. I agree the Sher-Wood would be closest to the 600. I also think IF we have to throw the S into today's terms, it's a 600 also

FWIW - Heaton actually started the discussion and terminology 60 degree break. Roy used this model, asked for a Heaton style glove, and the 590 break was born. Maybe we should be hipster goalie snobs calling them 3000 style breaks and 2000 style breaks?
