Bob Essensa with Oilers pads on the Yotes:Belfour with Sharks - Note the Blackhawks pants too - didn't clash as much as the Osgood pants:Tom Barasso with the Leafs:Jamie McLennan with thinly hidden Panthers pads:Guy Hebert for his few minutes on the Rangers:
One of my favorite things to see in the NHL is the odd and rare situations where a goalie joins a new team but is still wearing his old team's gear. We all know NHL goalies go through equipment now faster than ever, so this situation is becoming less and less prevalent. One of the first big name goalies who joined a new team and continued wearing his old team's colored gear was Kelly Hrudey. When he left the Islanders, there weren't many goalies wearing team colored gear yet. So to see his Islanders gear with the Kings was neat - note the Islanders pants peeking out from under the kings shells too:The goalie who wore the most of his old team's gear with his new team had to be Osgood when he joined the Islanders. Guy wore his red helmet and even Red Wings pants with the Islanders jersey:Most recent is Turco:Some other memorables:
How did we all miss retro man skating in front. What decade are those gloves from? The 60s? Awesome. Add in the wood stick too.
Obiwonjabroni - greatest user name and picture ever too. Nailed it bro.
When I was your age, we didn't have the internet, cool cameras, electricity, etc. So the only memory of a good game I had was this:
The year prior we only had pictures chiseled into rock pieces. The invention of paper was a game changer.
The Mercer Arena looked pretty rad. Watched some of that game while drinking a Rainier, eating some Taco Time food, and reading insight magazine. I even subscribed to Rolling Stone after watching the commercial with Richard Lewis.
The white dashers - I think the rink was sunken in the arena. The doors for the Zamboni only opened above the dasher. So the Zamboni had to drop into the rink. The gates to the benches were tight and pretty high up. Even the benches were tiered with the teams sitting on opposite sides of the rink.
The corners were tight. But not a 90 degree corner. Maybe a 10' radius. I played on a rink with actual 90 degree corners. Mercer at least were rounded. The wrap arounds were impossible I'd assume at Mercer.
I would love something vivid.
I don't expect anything other than some over analyzed color scheme that is shown to sell the most and a team name that is safe as safe can get with all the current and predicted social corrections.
Maybe the
