  1. I'll second the vote for a Warrior jock. I'm on my second one (elastic just stretched out a bit too much for me and was an excuse I don't need to buy gear (even as boring as a jock)) and have nary had an issue. Before that I had a Simmons Air jock which was also more than adequate (though it doesn't look like those are an option after a quick site peruse (?)). Before that - an ooold Vic jock.

I'm not sure two true "cups" are necessary (somewhere @bunnyman666 is cursing me up and down). Most current offerings seem to subscribe to the cup covered by a padded protective "plate" which is still two layers of protection. Honestly my biggest gripe with any of the newer jocks I've seen or tried is the lack of FUPA protection. That old Vic of mine had a huge band above the cup that would articulate logically at the waist. Seems everything any more just has a small width of protection above the cup itself. Hope this helps.

Wanted to revive this thread. I never did replace my cup like I was thinking of when I first created this thread. I just had the Eagle cup altered to fit better. But I still want to get a new cup. Question is, which one should I consider? Is double cup required? It seems some manufacturers offer a single cup as their top model presumably with other structural reinforcement to make up for using only one cup.

It turns out the Brown cup that I titled this thread after is only a single cup and the shield over it is what reinforces it. Anyone have any further opinions on their offering? Is it as protective as the standard double cup?

What are your opinions on what would be the ideal cup to wear? I think my local Perani's has a Brian's Optik double cup.

Any ideas and opinions are welcome.

  2. @Yzueblin is definitely on to something regarding the use of white and its inevitable discoloration. If you are going to get new kits fairly frequently - might be less of a concern. I think the real ticket is your current retro graphic (or similar) with an updated colorway - predominantly red and black. ❤️

  3. I can totally get behind forming a vendetta - and not in a petty way but in a "hey here's a slap of reality - why don't you join us" way.

Last season, I subbed for a mid-level C league team and gave up 5 goals.  Wasn’t my best game, but the team also had no business in a mid C league.  I typically play B level and have played a decent amount of A and held my own, so I’m pretty decent.

I got word from a teammate who occasionally subs for this garbage team that the guy that runs the team said I suck.  Mind you, this guy is a literal ankle bender and should be in an instructional league, but ok I suck.

So now I’m vengefully following their season and looking to sub for any team that plays against them.  In their first two games, they’re 0-2 with 16 goals against.

Usually a 6 pack will do the trick.

    Win or Lose, we booze.

This. We had a rough year this year (after winning it "all" the year prior). We'd get it all out in the locker room by the time we were done showering and then we were the team every week regardless of weather - beer circling it out in the parking lot. Assorted snacks, wheeled out a grill sometimes, etc. and by the time we were out there all was forgotten. I mean - I'm competitive for sure but I keep coming back because we have a good group of dudes (and one lady).

  5. Looks like this is the unofficial, "official" Boddam thread - do any of you know if Boddam is still in the business of building goalie gear? Looks like their site is still operational (https://boddamsports.ca/hockeyhome) and I've sent off an email to the address listed with no response yet after a couple days. Appreciate any insight.

  6. Wow - off my game. Completely glazed over Kenesky @pfeiffjay54 - thanks for the reminder. I’m afraid the landing gear on some of the Brown offerings might be a little too “old school” for me @kat30 but appreciate the thought. What can I say? I’m picky. 🤣

  7. Folks - as the title implies - I’m old school and know what I like and am looking for a “new” offering akin to those listed in the header - 90-ish (or acute angle territory when flexing) boot, double breaks, knee rolls and a “stuffed” pad with torsional flex (not a solid core construction). Reached out to Simmons but with Boddam closing (?) - they are no longer offering the UL line. Only manufacturer that came to mind was PAW… maybe? Anybody got any intel on PAW’s ability to do so or other suggestions in general? FYI - for… reasons - I’m not interested in Battram.

    Appreciate any insight.

  8. Bonus points if you do up actual textured dots with the graphic.

  9. Pretty sure @Rogie's lid is a Sportmask but couldn't tell you the exact model.

I like the shape of the mask. What brand/model is it? The wrap is simple and clean, looks great. Got me thinking Winnipeg Jets 😎

Here are mine. My Reidic is a wrap done by JF Aumais, a Sevigny tribute. My Bauer 940 is a quick vynil/decal I did myself. It would look cool as a paint job with a few more personal touches. If I had the coin, I'd send it to JBairbrush out West (Alberta?) To get it done. His work on Markstrom's masks is God like!

  10. Guess the thick sarcasm I said it with on the other side of the screen didn't come through. 🤣 In short - they are short. How short? Who really knows for sure except the equipment manager (or not - since pro equipment is less so focused on sizing and points to the owner mostly and he probably doesn't carry around a tape measure (or doesn't he (?))).

26" at the top of the shoulders, 22" at the bottom. Your average stick has about a 1" difference for the slope of the shoulders. The shoulders on Bob's stick are 4x that. Being able to hold the stick this way means his blocker presents much more upright to the shooter

  11. I know he had cups of coffee with a couple other teams (same can be said for Ozzie) - but being from the mitten and an unofficial Red Wing "historian" - Terry Sawchuk has to be the go to for Detroit. Hands down. I mean if you are synonymous with the position of goalie - period - then you kind of have to be the default of the team where you made your name.

I know it was mentioned that it wasn't about stats but c'mon - 447 wins (not counting playoffs which put him over 500) which held for decades and before the watered down effects of expansion - 103 which were by shutout (tack on another 12 in the playoffs). A shutout every 4.3 games. Unreal.

I'm in a divorce meeting with my wife and our attorneys the other day. Her attorney was trying to make a point that I "spend too much on new goalie gear". I almost fell out of my chair. This is the museum vintage gear I currently wear. Most of it is from the 90s.

My wife is desperate to make me look bad and justify why she wants a divorce. Truthfully she's just an out of control narcissist thinking she's better than everyone else.

I'm not mad. Please just go. Thanks for the laugh of having your expensive lawyer learn about goalie gear from the 1990s.

  13. @keeperton I'm hip to the construction of equipment - I do play goalie after all (and consider myself a gear whore to boot (hence my involvement here)). 😉 Guess I'll respectively disagree regarding the eye for an eye thing being problematic for me personally (or even potentially globally). Probably a byproduct of people running amok on the daily and getting away with it sans repercussions. Gets old. Or maybe I'm old (and crotchety). Either way - I have to admit I enjoy me some comeuppance to restore balance to the force. But I will agree there is a point where things escalate too far. I don't think getting punched in the mouth for being a dick is one them.

Thanks for the translated backstory @coopaloop1234. Still tough for me to feel super sorry for this guy (he did spear him multiple times seemingly targeting a sensitive area). Its like this - if Brad Marchand got a concussion after acting a fool it'd be really tough to truly feel sorry for him. Granted - I don't revel in other's misfortune but actions have consequences. If we all did a better job of policing ourselves on the front end - there'd be less of a call to arms to do so on the back end.

Just one cranky and tired on the regular usually only half a man's opinion.

  14. I find it interesting that he was so concerned with popping the guy that he totally gave up on the play while hovering over him to the side - meanwhile the puck was squirting free out at the blueline. Then he kind of remembers he's supposed to be in net and the play is still going. Telling. Must have really not taken kindly to the rib shot.
