  1. “Stick”-ing this in the CCM thread (man, I am hilarious!) because it’s about my CCM foam core stick.

As some might know, I’m not playing a ton, and it’s a mix of lessons and pick up games, so maybe a dozen 1-hour skates all told. There seems to be a very small chunk that came out of he paddle. The whole foam core thing is new to me, so I’m not sure if:

    1. This is normal wear

    2. Is there anything preventative I can/should do here to prevent it worsening?

hope the picture is good enough for experts to comment on.

Alright! as you are requesting more introductions, here goes.

My name is Mads and I'm from Denmark. Currently being an apprentice to become a maritime service engineer, so me and my SO  decided to move for a job opportunity for me... which is pretty much a fluke as they are not teaching me what they are supposed to, so i'm searching for a new apprenticeship in the area where we came from and where we both used to play hockey.

So right now I don't play icehockey, but i'm bulking up on gear lol! Just missing pads then i got a complete new set of gear, never used :P Same goes for my SO, she's waiting for her passau catcher/blocker and C/A that should have been done like a week and a half ago, but no word from passau after enquiring about it last thursday i believe?

Used to play some junior hockey for 3 seasons back when i was 12-15, and didn't start again untill the season before the current one. and can't wait to come back to play!

Also, not sure if this is the right place to ask but any recommendations on pads, as the last ones i used were a pair of premiers (Rbk) that was some used danish prostock from the year 2005... so needlesly to say they had been beaten to death lol!

I don't post a lot in general but i tend to keep an eye on the site every day :) Hopefully you are still awake and have not fallen asleep half way during this read.

Have a great evening and enjoy the world cup in Denmark!

    /Mads

    Hey Mads! Thanks for posting!

Long distance from Denmark? ?? Cool! Good luck landing a better apprenticeship. Reading between the lines, it sounds like your SO is a keeper (Also for putting up with you! ) I know my wife was a saint even before I decided to play goalie.

I’m in no position to advise on pads, but it might be a particular challenge for you being in Europe. I think @Znowleopard recently posted about buying pads...? I think he’s in Belgium...(?)

    Anyway, welcome!

    Cheers

I actually bought them from a fella that only used them 4 times and cleaned the puck marks off after every outing, the pic was from the day I purchased them. I'm from the school of leaving the marks on there, so they don't show as well now ;). I'll probably be buried in these pads so I am not too worried about the resale!

I'm only 6 games into my resurrection, hopefully more puck marks to come, I certainly am having a blast.

Thanks for the compliment! And yah, I see an even worse looking character when I shave, so don't worry about it! ?

I’m also a “keep the puck marks” guy -at least the ones that I know are mine! It kinda tells your story of goaltending, right? While I bought my pads brand new, I got the blocker and trapper off a guy on Kijiji. I LOVE them, but I can’t tell which marks are from the other guy, and which are mine (probably only 5% of them are mine anyway-lol!)

glad to hear the resurrection is fun!

What the heck, I'll jump in too! Before you guys give me grief about wearing old Reebok IIIs, consider that they were replacing Heaton Pro 90Z's from the 1990s?.  I added the Brian's smart toe strap to the Reeboks and really like it. Glove is a CCM Extreme Flex w/ Pro Palm, blocker ummm, well...matches. I'm still learning modern equipment, that is why I am here! Mask, you met the armadillas in my first thread.

Wow - that Reebok/CCM Set up looks pristine! Have they ever even seen rubber??? I’m not saying you’re a shit goalie (and I know shit goalies; I see one everyday when I’m shaving!), but have you ever even played in those? They look amazing. Very nice indeed?

Maybe it’s time to introduce myself, I’ll make it brief.

First off, I’ve been in goalie gear for a year and a half and have been playing a little over a year, my dad and I started going to ducks playoffs games in 2014-2015 and I just got obsessed with it. I’ve always been a goalie even in soccer when I was younger so it was easy for me to choose.

I started off in a house league and played on a JV team and it was awful, lots of drama. Anyways, I’ve had the same goalie coach ever since I got full gear and he’s the reason why I’m now playing in the ADHSHL Varsity Tier 2, I joined the team late but plan on going back. I also play for the LA Lions 16U AA but might not be after this season due to lots of drama as well.

Overall, I wish I started playing hockey a lot sooner but there wasn’t a lot of hockey growing up, but it’s still the best thing I’ve ever done.

    Thanks for reading,

    Izzy

Hey Izzy! Thanks for posting! I hear ya about wishing you could have started earlier; my start was at age 39 - and that’s just 2 months ago, with wife, kids, mortgage, job... so I’d say you’re winning! :giggle:

Weird how many Ducks fans there are... but then I even find a single Ducks fan to be peculiar- lol!

...for anyone reading these who hasn’t yet introduced themselves, be like Izzy and post! I will give you a “reaction”, which will give you points, which can be redeemed for (pictures of) sweet pro gear! Or cred. Or something... I guess.

Just another followup on the Optik vs 1X sizing.  I realized I never took a picture during the month he had the 1X, but I did have game video.  He also just played his first game in the Optik Monday (which I have video of).  So I did a screen grab of each.  Its not the greatest quality, but you can really see the difference.

See how square the 1X is.  It also rides up quite a bit at the back of the helmet.  One of the first things my kid commented on was how much easier he could move his head around.  BTW, we did sinch it up quite a bit to try and beef up the shoulders a bit.  Still way smaller than the 1X.

He took a couple of rockets to the chest that night and didn't blink an eye...

Personally I think these are both great units.  Just depends on what you are looking for.

    comp.jpg

Nice comparison photo - you can really see a marked difference from that angle. Better mobility and still great protection? Nice.

Me to Brain: commit "Optik C/A" to memory

Me to Brain: determine way to pay for new Optik C/A

OK  - I think you guys misunderstood - the idea of this thread was actually for me to talk about myself - don't really care about anyone else.

(OK JK - love to hear about where people are coming from and how/why they took up the position!)

I think that's called Facebook. Not sure, because I have never had a FB account myself. Personally, I'm waiting for them to have more self-interested millennials with ZERO filter - who are preferably also self-identified foodies and post pics of every meal - as members before I join. :P

    Good onya!!!!

Wow - quite chuffed to get this from you, the much-esteemed Mr. @bunnyman666 Sir! Ta!

I didn't want to intrude as an unknown noob on your update thread, but I was very touched by your post, and needless to say my thoughts are with you. AND I am thrilled to see that you have decided to continue contributing!

    Cheers! :chug:

  9. Yeah, straight up; this is a bump. :D

I think I've noticed some new members join, and might not be aware of this thread. In this iteration here on the goalie network, it was @Ghostender who started it (thanks!) I think it's great, and I love reading about how people got to being a goalie present-day, where they are/where they're from, and whatever other anecdotes! I have an entry here, as do several other members. Great reading to be had!

So why not make an entry yourself... ?

I have detachable thigh straps on my Vaughns as well.  I kept them to carry the pads but remove them for game play.  I don't know how you carry yours but just an idea for you.

"Carry"...? Like, carry my own stuff...? Perish the thought - I have people for that. I also have people to tie my skates, strap my pads, and do my stretches and warm up for me. I'm presently interviewing someone to stand in front of the net for me too.  :giggle:

Truth is I bungee-cord them (nice soft fabric covered ones with plastic clips; they're shit for anything out in the yard - esp with Ottawa winters, but they're perfect for this) to the top of my bag. Yup - I'm a wheel bag weenie; my thinking is that I don't want to injure myself on the way to or from the rink (esp with a repeatedly-dislocated shoulder that almost popped in a game last week), so fuck it. Imma gonna get my wheelz on.

  11. So I have Reactor 9000 pads, and I removed the top straps; not because I really know what I’m doing, or what I like - more because I can feel like I did a mod without really doing anything.

Anyway, I was looking at my pads, and the strap holder/flap thing looks kinda dumb, so I had a closer look. I discovered that there’s a little pouch opening, and being the same shape as the flap, I tucked it in. Is that what it’s there for - or is it so you can put your weed in it...?

First pic is the flap/strap holder. Second is with it tucked inside the little pouch.

(BTW - if there is proper terminology for these please tell me... flaps and pouches sounds a bit rude...)

@Lucky Pucker keep on having fun! I still have this fear of not being able to play and I'm 36, all those years missed! I'm pretty good at it shocking, health will be #1

Me too, brother! Like, I am loving this so much, but what if I really hurt my knee or something? Hips, etc? But then it seems a lot of 35+ pick up games are content to have someone simply wearing goalie equipment in the vicinity of the net, so mobility might not be super important for me later on. Besides - it's as important (maybe MORE important) to look cool, and have cool gear!

As others have mentioned in other threads, a foam roller does wonders. It is my most important piece of equipment, and I use it daily! (OK, I sorta "liberated" it from my wife, who got it when she had an IT band injury from our half-marathon training, before kids, and before either one of us knew what/where an IT band was... but I digress)

  13. Interesting story, @mr_shifty1982 - or Niv! I just came back from my 2nd-ever appearance as goalie (just a pick up game  - but I think I might have kept the GAA under double digits this time! :datass:)

Good to know that it gets better for those people who have this dream, and only get to start living it a tad later in life. My story/introduction is on page 1 of this thread I think, but I started this about 2 months ago at age 39. It sure takes some character to do what we do - and more so when you do it badly (speaking for myself here). I have left every single session as goalie with a goofy grin on my face though, a feeling of satisfaction and gratitude that I finally get to do this, and excitement knowing that I have so much room for improvement.

I'm personally a big fan of this thread, so thanks for posting, Niv!

    Cheers

Wow. That was effin brilliant! Big props to @MTH for that one! I’m not sure I can live up to that level, so I’ll have to have a good, serious think on my post idea (esp as it involves about zero Norfolk Admirals).

What was this thread originally about...? Oh right - I’m 5’10” and use a CCM foam core, Price curve, and 25” paddle. I also cut the shaft, but only about 3” off if memory serves... but this really reflects about 20 minutes of internet research WAY more than any preference/awareness of what the hell I’m doing.

Exactly. Best part of the GSBB was just some of the random off-topic threads that would pop up where users were able to goof around and shitpost. There was tons of valuable information, but we don't always need to be so serious around here. :giggle:

I feel inspired by this; post to follow...

Hey everyone, My name is Jake. I'm a new goaltender living in SoCal. Wasn't a huge hockey fan as a kid as I played baseball growing up but my dad worked for a company that got us a lot of tickets, mostly for the Kings. My buddies got me back into hockey during the 2014-2015 season and I've been hooked since. I'm a Ducks fan but I also follow the Avs fairly closely as I'm looking to move to Colorado one day...and I'm a huge Patrick Roy fan. Playing wise, I haven't seen game action just yet, but I've been doing private lessons with a former ECHL goaltender for about 2 months now. Really looking forward to joining a rookie league that starts this July.

    Hey Jake!

nice to read another background; I’m a big supporter of this thread (see earlier bumps... ahem! Posts.)

I was also a huge Roy fan, but from before he went to the land where yellow food die and carbonation is added to mountain water and sold as “beer”.

I'm also pretty new; I have one pick up game (and a double-digit GAA) under my belt now, so clearly WAAAAY ahead of you!  But then my goalie coach is not a former ECHL goalie, so maybe you are actually ahead of ME!

Anyway, from a fellow neophyte net minder, welcome. Great help, great laughs, great guys here!

    cheers

So I took a slap shot off my cage last night from some cunt who though trying to injure me was funny should I replace the cage or is it alright? IMG_20180414_235835.thumb.jpg.dbebed3e0e74cd2d9f7de774e41e272c.jpgIMG_20180414_235845.thumb.jpg.d8c1be6e8eb5841606f2b587ebd07fd3.jpg

And is there anything I can do about the paint?

Forget the bucket for a sec - are you ok? I’ve never had a slap shot off the noggin, but I imagine it’s not the best...

The p1 that Luongo is wearing is even older. Guys in the show know what they like and generally stick to it. Hell, Hellbuyck has about 6 leather straps per pad still. He's comfortable in "older" style gear and considering how and where he is playing, you can't knock him.

Cool - so obviously the same is true for me if I have V5 gear, right? ...  Right?!?

FFS - I started being a goalie in February of this year, and bought a V5 blocker and trapper off some dude here in Ottawa... because I’m NOT rich and because I’ve NEVER done this before. Why is this dude rocking V5? Isn’t that really old gear...?
