Hiller out with head injury again :(

Hiller got hit in the mask and went down in last night's playoff game and didn't start the 3rd period :( I was just reading Hiller has been plagued with many head injuries going back to 2011. Hopefully this doesn't trigger it again. He's been playing fairly well lately, and his current team (EHC Biel) just made the playoffs for the first time since 1990 (!) And just 2 games away from reaching the Finals, altho it looks like their wheels are starting to come off, not just Hiller, but other injuries and their opponent Lugano seems to be waking up now too (they have Merzlikins in net, who is also one of the best in the Swiss league right now)

Anyway, here's a link to the video of Hiller getting hit (have to watch a 30 sec commercial first :/ )

Better quality version here in the full highlights: http://tv.sihf.ch/SmartPublish/index?clubId=BFA56684-1A6D-407D-866F-1E6E1F766281 (also finally glad to see the NL has some accessible highlights :chug: )

Looks like it catches him square on the forehead, I think new stick technology has a significant role to play in a lot of these goalie head injuries we're seeing with the composites and kick points etc meaning that releases are quicker than ever. I see it even at my shitty level where composites have allowed most people - within reason - to have a decent shot, whereas when I mainly skated out in the 90s you had to work at your shot. Can't even imagine the difference it makes at pro level, tough to know where mask design goes from here when a notable amount of NHLers have concussions from shots.

Any rumours in Switzerland whether Merzlikins is likely to make it over to the NHL this offseason? He's a fun guy to watch in net (everyone should watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta4fPFcq-Vg if you don't know who he is!) but I'm guessing NHL coaches will reign him in a bit!

Wow - that was really entertaining! I mean, dude is sorta blocking style, but then when the technique breaks down, he’s acrobatic reflex guy. Watching him made me think:

Skating: Ed Giacomin. Can’t find a good clip, but I’ve seen this guy skating out to the blue line - and past it! -in B&W film.

Stick work (on puck): Carey Price

Stick work (on people): Hextall

Scrambling: Hasek

...with maybe a dash of Marchand/Gallagher pest it seems!

thanks for sharing, @Znowleopard

Cheers,

Mark
