Henrik Lundqvist #30 Retirement

Finally, I'm a Flyers fan since I was a little dude. They play the Rangers a lot every year. Decades of rivalry and all.

There's a saying that "nobody hates the bad players". It really holds true in the NHL. Using that scale to grade Lundquist... I never recall every hating him. Brodeur? All day long. Killed the Flyers with ease. But Lundquist didn't really have that effect. Sure, he was a star, so you knocked him for that as a fan of an opponent. And some of those Rangers teams were pretty thin on stars. But since he left, there hasn't been much of difference in the rivalry.

Maybe it's his vanilla style of play that every goalie uses now. He's big. Blocks a lot of the net. Can't catch a puck. Modded his skates so his pads sit higher to close the 5 hole more... what am I missing? Mask with the Statue of Liberty? That was Richter.

Even in his later years with the Rangers, you didn't see him playing against your team and think "we're screwed". In his prime, he played a lot of the games, so it was just part of the Rangers.

Conversely, I hated Matthew Barnaby when he played. Who didn't? He's not a HoF player by any stretch. But Lundquist was not Barnaby. His skills would be his only thing you'd hate him for. But we never really did.

Sure fire HoF in his first year. But forgettable as a player as an opposing fan.

Did anyone catch the article where he started to use his practice palm glove in game? So stiff he could barely, if at all, close it? I believe he was described as a waiter holding a tray when he did catch the puck!

I don’t mind NYR, they’re one of those teams that I have respect for the goalie history more than the team itself, but not winning a cup aside, he has many accolades to be proud of. HoF for sure.

I did. It's one of the articles linked in this thread.  They also mentioned the creation of the Lundy loop on skates.  He made an impact, for sure.

This man caused an absolute riot in Sweden when he came over to North America and found success.

When I worked at Monkey, we'd get calls every fucking weekend from guys in Sweden asking for TPS gear in his exact specs, and they were happy to oblige.  This was when pro-spec and pro-return started catching on, so like 2006-2007.  CCM did exact replicas of Toskala, Belfour, and Brodeur gear which released to retail for some of their shops.  Pro stock sticks were big, and we'd start seeing some C/As and pants from various pro teams in the shop.

TPS did the same thing as a custom order for the handsome gentleman we are celebrating in this thread.  Lundy's specs at the time on the pads came out to some wooden planks shaped in the form of a goalie pad, measuring out to a 34+4.  I remember them being totally straight top-to-bottom (aside from the boot break).  He also had his knee rolls shifted down on the face of the pad so the pad looked even bigger.  The glove break was made of molded plastic and would not close, even if you had two hands trying to jam it shut.

We'd occasionally see that gear listed on GSBB or eBay a few weeks after they we sent them.  No normal people could or would or should wear what he had.

I always lumped Lundquist in the same level as Jose Theodore. Theodore at least won the Hart and Masterton awards too.

José Théodore flirt avec Paris Hilton

Also, he got Paris in her prime. Not that Lundquist couldn't have either - he's a married man.

Theodore looks like Tommy Lee, minus the tattoos, in that shot!

I don't see the HOF being an issue. The flow of HOF worthy players will taper down. Guys don't stay dominate in the league like they used to anymore. It's a young man's game for sure. He'll be the big name on the year he's elected in.

While a good player that played a long time, he really lacks the pile of big time accolades (other than looks). Playing in NYC gave him more of a stage than most guys who played. I think the all star game nods are representative more of popularity. Also, the NHL all star game has become a circus side show of shinny.

Lunquist awards and all:

  • 1 Vezina
  • 5 time All Star
  • 6th in career wins: 459
  • 14th in losses: 310

His international career definitely strengthens his case, also. World Championship and Olympic golds. As well as a bunch of hardware from when he played for Frölunda.

Great points. My apologies for overlooking that.

I mean, if it didn't happen in America, did it really happen at all?

Are you crapping on Frölunda?

Tommy Salo and his hardware will not be pleased.

He also questions if it happened in America, did it really happen...

Salt Lake City:

Doug Norris on Twitter: "1999: Tommy Salo traded by @NYIslanders to @EdmontonOilers https://t.co/QhoEREm29i https://t.co/ml9LuSg8Jc" / Twitter

Long Island:

Tommy Salo

Never happened.

Maybe we should ask Dan Cloutier when Tommy Salo retired.

That was bizarre when he challenged the bench.

Bizarre -  more like entertaining. I miss the days of passionate hockey. And not just in the shower...
