daffy
finally got out on the ice with the new chest protector. I was injured for 5 weeks. Anyway, very mobile out of the box. Protection from shots i received was great! A little stiff in the belly when in my crouch but with time that should break in nicely. Found rebounds were alittle issue with new foams but once again. I think it will change as it breaks in. Fit is good. Switched the large in pics above for a medium with loop attached to back plate. When trying it at home, it felt like the back needed to be pulled down more. Dont notice it when on the ice though. Same for the arms. Much tighter than the old unit but didnt notice it 5 mins into the skate. All in all, very happy with it after first skate.

This thread is also for all things Boddam. Im now on my third set of pads and fourth blocker. Still haven't tried the glove but maybe someone else can comment. I play beer league against everyone from life long rec players to former pros. I grew up watching Ed Belfour, Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. I play butterfly but get up on the wrong foot alot and sometimes not the smoothest moving around the crease. I end up throwing up a two pad stack once in awhlie but never a kicksave as my groin and abductors are shot from arthritis in the hips. The blocker I love Boddam blockers. All 4 i have owned have been stock except for the intermediate palm for my smaller hand. I disagree with people who say a blocker is a blocker. The balance is great on the Boddam blocker. I find the hand placement just right as well. Its more in the center of the board and with the curved face, i can deflect pucks well over the net if im a bit behind tracking the puck and just get a piece. Rebounds dont fly off the blocker but do go to the corners without having to punch it that way. Figure protection is good. Ive never had any issues with it. No injured fingers. Weight is good. I dont place a premium on weight but this blocker is as light as any ive put on in the store. The one thing about Boddam blockers is you cant get a bindless one. Jason just doesnt like how it turns out so he hasnt bothered to offer one. Pads - Hybrid model As you can see from who i followed when i was younger, a hybrid pad is ideal for me. A narrow butterfly is the reason for a double break. The pad is soft but it is firmer than the original version. Very soft boot break and the pad has lateral flex in the shin. The pad internals are more traditional which does contribute to alittle more weight than most pads today. As mentioned, i put a premium more on comfort tham weight. Im sure the Patriot or Refuze pad would be much lighter. I like my pads locked down to my foot so i continue to use an open toe and boot strap. Tapered toe and thigh rise. I move so much better with the taper. I havent had issues with pucks through the 5 hole as the pads are 34+3. I use sno seal on them and am able to slide well. Perhaps not as well as a pure butterfly pad but works well for me. The straps are all adjustable or removable so ive been experimenting with different strapping. I asked for a softer knee landing since the old knees are wearing out and i do notice the new pads are softer than the last pair i had. Jason was good to work with. My new pads are the same as the first ones i had which lasted 5 years. He is open to making a pad that works for you. I did have some issues getting him to do open toe again but he was able to get it done. Quality has been good on both the pads and blockers ive owned. They are well put together and ive faced some really good players without any issues. Let me know if you have any questions. http://boddam.com/hockeyhome Nice stuff

Not sure if i can get an accurate reading off it. Ill try. Quick note. Been using the chest full time now. Break in was quick. Still quite happy with it. daffy
@TheGoalNet finally put the chesty on the bathroom scale. I just put it on the scale, no basket. Dont think the scale is too accurate. Came in at 5.5lbs. Seems light compared to other models. Might check with Jason at Boddam to see what he says weight would be.

Try going on the scale without it and then with it on and then take the difference between the two weights.

Curty
I just ordered a Refuze chesty. I’m excited to try it out. I’ve used their lacrosse gear for years and love it.

Curty
Love this unit. Just as comfortable and protective as my lacrosse one. Great movement as well. Still working on the final strapping set up but it's almost there. Edited December 5, 2019 by Curty Add info

Took a hard one on the inside of the collar bone that hurt and one in the arm pit that left a huge bruise. Just bad luck though I think. It’s been easy to break in and is super mobile. One improvement I’d make is to the strapping system on the back. I still haven’t found the ideal setup. I’d prefer more of a back plate than the system it has now. I’ll post some pics tomorrow. dualshowman
Is this the stock backplate strapping?: If so, I find this unacceptable. I do not want to bag on any smaller manufacturer because they are typically just trying to hack it with the big boys... but this is an antiquated and somewhat cynical solution to a problem long ago solved. Curty
That’s the option I went with to keep my sides protected. I’ve done no mods as of yet. Looks like it’ll be tough to change the setup with the amount sewing involved.
daffy
Resident Boddam guy here. After years of playing in Boddam hybrids, I thought it would be good to try to update the gear. Wanted to try before ordering different style pads though and found a lightly used set of Patriot pads and gloves. Gloves are too big so I'll leave those aside but looking forward to trying the pads. Set had only been used by previous owner 15 or so times. When I got them, I looked them over and was disappointed to find the calf wrap pulling away from the pad. I've always been happy with Boddam quality but the nylon used seems to be too thin in that area. If the pads feel right and I look to order I'd definitely ask for a change there. Anyway, will follow up with a few more thoughts after I get a couple skates in them. 1
WillyGrips13
Wow, those look great. Love the shape of that catching glove. When you say the gloves are too big, do you mean the interior in relation to your hands or the spec of the exterior?

I order my Boddam blockers with medium palm. This one is large/senior palm. The catcher would work if the finger stalls were shorter so I could get my hand into the glove further. Might be an option if I end up ordering new.
chile57
Looks like this is the unofficial, "official" Boddam thread - do any of you know if Boddam is still in the business of building goalie gear? Looks like their site is still operational (https://boddamsports.ca/hockeyhome) and I've sent off an email to the address listed with no response yet after a couple days. Appreciate any insight.
