Moose75 Posted January 12, 2019 Share Posted January 12, 2019 I was looking through old cards and determined there are a lot of fantastic mask designs from the 1990's that never get remembered or done as modern tributes. Post the guys you think had the most underrated mask designs! Stéphane Fiset had quite a few great ones! I think his "King Tut" mask for the Kings is one of the most underrated designs of the 90's. Could actually be the same painter? I'm googling to try and find an answer. Something about the 90's/early 00's mask aesthetic appeals to me. It's still detailed, but has a simplistic quality to it where it's not impossible to see what it is. This one could easily be repurposed as a Coyotes mask. Looks almost like they took their logo from it: A couple other of my favorites were Roman Turek's monster, and Beezer's Panther head. You put that over one of the safest masks ever built, tough to beat that! They're underrated maybe in the idea that they don't have churches devoted to them, I suppose. My altar contains three. One of my all-time favorites — a Protechsport with an absolute perfect balance between a big, simple design and nice detailing. Thanks for posting that. Goalies didn't dissapear year to year. You had guys (like Tuggnutt) who were in the NHL for a long time. 2. Fewer teams, so you saw the same goalies often. 3. Gear was pretty plain and simple, so the masks stood out. 4. Goalies didn't change gear during the season really. So you saw the same thing game after game. 5. It was new. So everything was original. 6. Hockey cards. How many times did we look at the same card? I knew every player in the league then. I could mostly tell you what every player wore for gear too. My thoughts on why intricate, modern masks are less memorable have been repeated to exhaustion, so I'll leave the "design" part out of this. But if I had to make a high-view, "macro" statement on why masks just aren't as memorable these days, I think it all comes back to the fact that we live in a very disposable culture now. Whether it's viral sensations, celebrities, trends, attitudes, photos, videos, or whatever, the pervasive attitude is "what's next? what's next? what's next? what's next?" I mean, everyone's always been looking for 'the next big thing', but with modern capabilities and technology, we can actually satisfy that rampant cultural ADHD. It seems like the majority of goalies have a new mask every season, and more than a few of them have several each year — hard for a design to really resonate when it's only on the ice for a couple of months before another comes along. And I get why it happens — goalies can have them auctioned off for good causes (great!) and painters, who now have social media to promote their creations, want to showcase the diversity of their work (also great). His mask - a Harrison (what else?) - I think fits the bill of this thread. He had two versions as I recall from drawing him repeatedly, but I'm having trouble finding good pics of the first version. I think the 80s and Early’s 90 masks were painted by someone else. I think Marlene did the late 90s through mid 2000s masks Like does anyone know who painted the OG Roy Mask?
