A Pad is Born

After this introduction and description, I will show the birth of my new PAW pads. I was pledged to buy from another maker, but their refusal to build a glove based on the old spec led me to PAW. After I got my old spec PAW glove, I desperately wanted a set of pads. With Sara's fair, but not cheap prices and willingness to do mods without being nickeled and dimed to death, I could not resist trying her for a set of pads.

Many of you who are GSBB veterans remember Sara when she was teaching herself how to repair and build equipment. She is an impressive woman with her knowledge of building gear.

Sara's willingness to work with me and interject with her ample knowledge when necessary has been nothing short of amazing.

I went with a Winlite/Aeroflex style single landing area. I had found myself pushing the seperate areas together (and even sewing them together on one set of pads).  Another small maker has incorporated the singular landing area recently, and this concept has proven to enjoy some popularity.

I also went with elastics, including an elastic "Professor" strap. I use these on my pads, and am a big fan of them. But Sara also made provisions to install nylon or leather straps, as well. I may change my mind, or in the event of a sale, the next user can change their mind.

I also went with ZERO graphics, with the exception of a single, silver, biased stripe on the boot. I call my graphic the "Euro League Billboard" graphic. I like the clean slate look.

Here are a few pix; pix of the completed pads are to come. Stay tuned.

It's funny that many senior pad features end up later on as innovative features on pro pads. Clips instead of buckles? Came from senior pads. Lighter weight materials like nylon and cordura? Came from senior pads.

There is a pair of Blockades JUST like that pic that have languished in a PIAS for the last year at $199.

Less expensive materials, less labor due to simplified designs, and made in China... Kinda interesting when you think about the evolution pro gear

Another update: I was joking about having someone print "this space for rent" or "Viagra" or something funny on padskinz, when it dawned on me- why don't I advertise my business on the pad?

Yes- I am winding down my business, hoping to retire from hair dressing in 5-10 years; however- why NOT take FULL advantage of the wide open, blank space and get a tax benefit to boot? After all, there are no graphics to pucker and lift from the pad when going for a full cover up like on a pad with the latest "tribal" graphics sewn onto the pad. As I have found with my earlier attempts at padwrap/padskinz, the graphics underneath cause the lifting of a solid piece of pad covering! I could go with plain, old printing vinyl, but the residue could hurt the jenpro underneath. I could start a trend!

On a side note- I may have to do a tie in with a sweater. Can't find Buffalo Sabres shoulder patches to go on my Buffalo Sabres sweater, but it's the wrong sweater, anyway. Yes- I wanted to do a Hasek Sabres sweater...

How much does each pad weigh?   They look like they would be fairly light, yet not quite "best-in-class" light.   I am going to guess 4.75 lbs per pad (assuming they are 35" pads).    Curious to see how close my guess is when they are complete and ready to go.     They look very nice!    With all of that blank space on the face, you could really get into some interesting "wrap" designs.

I will have to ask Sara if she weighed them after she sews the trims on (thigh and toe). All of the little things that were omitted and such will contribute to a lighter weight pad. Lack of graphics? Take off Jenpro, glue, an in some cases, foam. All elastics? Takes off more weight. All of those little things should get them close to  the mid 4# range.

I will have some advert padskinz on them.

I am getting some padwrap lettered so my pads will be certified advertising pieces.

My pads fit very well. Tile and carpet flies seemed good. The Monster K Strap pockets are a nice touch, though I could go without the K straps. Sara provided her  own version, but I installed my own. Mine fit my tiny calves perfectly.

Is that a complaint? Absolutely not! I did not give my calf measurement! I love the pockets for the K strap!

Calf wrap has a whole side of velcro for the velcro straps for customised strap placement.

These pads have a real break at the knee. I usually am tying down the thigh tise for an S shape. Since my butterfly is horrendous, this break will close the 5.

In all- LOTS of thought went into these pads.

More to come...
