Painting True Goalie skates

Hey guys. I have been wanting to paint the carbon fiber part of my true skates for a while now. Anyone know how to do it/recommendations for people to do it? I have heard that I can take it to a body shop and have them paint them but I don't know if I want to spend 70$ on a paint job if I could get it somewhere else for much cheaper.

Do you have experience painting something like this?

I'm a little out of my depth here, but I seem to recall that there are chemical considerations that may come into play...?

Moreover, any sanding means introducing airborne micro-particles of carbon into your working area; proper mask and protection would be a must.

It also occurs to me that by painting, you may be voiding the warranty (if one s still in place), but I don't know the specifics of True's skates and warranties.

The urge to do this project may very well come from an aesthetic whim, but the undertaking and execution should be approached with research and extreme caution.

Just my $0.02 (and that's in Canadian currency, so like $0.015 US - LOL!)

Prep isn’t that bad. You would need a quick-building primer, which any shoppe that paints ‘vettes would have the correct products to prep that boot. I would think $70 USD would be cheap, frankly.

Painting these would be no worse than painting a mask; after all- most masks and sticks are made of the same or similar materials.

That being said- your (or your body shoppe’s) hard work could be for naught, plus the amount of WEIGHT added to make the skate accept and keep paint could make this a zero-sum performance gain for sheer aesthetics; but we are of the position that shows off our personality through our gear. If you use your skates AT ALL in your selection of saves, you could lose paint; errant shots can chip the paint.  Banging the posts could cause big paint chips.

As much as it sounds like I am trying to talk you out of this, I think it would look cool as hell painted. Carbon composite tends to look cool at first but boring after while. My old truly “nude” bike frames with a combo of both uni-directional and weave composite were too much for many to take when they wanted a truly “raw” finish; only one still exists as it was built as the customers took their bikes to a ‘vette specialist and got some truly drop-dead gorgeous bikes with a little weight penalty. But bike frames don’t get dinged by 6 ounces of frozen rubber like skates do on a regular basis.

Whatever you decide, I think I speak for many to say we want to see what you come up with!

I do not but one of my buddies is arty and has painted shoes and cars before.

He must be one of the guys who is on the Angelus shoe paint instagrams... I have discovered a whole new way to refresh and customise goalie gear with that stuff.

Proper prep is the key, just like with Angelus shoe paints. If he knows how to paint a goalie mask, he could paint your skates. Of course many goal masks have a gelcoat, which prep is different than for “raw” composite, which is different than a shoe. I imagine that if he is fastidious with prep for painting shoes that he will do the correct prep work, but it will be labour intensive. You would prep it just like prepping a ‘vette with freshly repaired panels.

I'd never heard of this stuff before you brought it up.  The possibilities seem endless and I'd love to see your results!
