Very true.

Though I think accidents like these give us a little bit more perspective on how dangerous a position this really is to play.

Despite how rare it is, it still does happen. I just play men's league and shinny, where there isn't any medical staff standing by. So if this happens to me I'm in big trouble. Anything that I can do to mitigate the chances of getting cut I'll look into. I just feel like there is market out there for companies to make a better cut protection product specifically for goalies.

There is an emergency tourniquet kit you can attach to your braces.

I too do not wear any knee protection.  I should say no knee protection meant for pucks.  I wear McDavid padded knee sleeves to help cushion my knees as the padding in the knee cradle of my V6 pads has deteriorated over the years.  I just cannot wear knee pads.  Its too much bulk for me to get used to.  I don't wear these oversized wide open goal shorts that are made today.  I wear original Bauer Reactors that were made back in the late 90s-early 00s and are pretty slim compared to today.

i was this guy for a long time too (couldnt stand the feel of the knee pads pushing the pad off my leg, way too much bulk, was wearing a pair of V3's at the time with the slimmer knee lock). ran the gamut of knee protection trying to make something (anything) work (some custom PAWs, some maltese KTPs and virtually EVERY major brand iteration at the time) with zero success. for what its worth - i now wear warrior rituals in junior (yes - you read that right - seriously cuts down the bulk and I'm only like 5' - 5" with skinnier legs) and have no complaints. they have a logical "hinge" below the knee (which was my major gripe with virtually every other pair i tried) that provides good up/down as well as side to side motion.

First skate wearing gladiator socks (over my kneepads). Didn't feel any hotter than my regular, polyester socks; there's less stretch, so they fit a bit tighter, which I like because I feel like it kept my kneepads firmly in place. 10/10, would recommend.

glad to hear this. Was looking at these

Manufacturers knew of the risk long ago: I bought Reebok 20k players pants with cut protection. Why they stop making some cut protection for skaters and goalie is beyond me.   Most options do not cover the upper leg to protect the femoral artery. But here what I found,  some are really good.

Ultimate protection would be law enforcement long johns like this but I don't know how well it would move or how hot or heavy those could be: I assume that they provide 100% through the garment but not sure. They have to meet some standard norms as well.

Base360 speed skating pants. Best coverage area of any pants on the inside upper thigh but less protection in the back of the hamstrings as some others. Exceed  ISU 1265 cut resistance standard a requirement for short track speed skating. The short track speed skating under layer are regulated to cover life threatening area and provide adequate cut protection against skates.  I bought those for my son and they were incredibly durable and you can move incredible well in them. Much better protection and quality than the goalie pants by the same company:

Can order from Netherlands with 30 euro  shipping from https://www.skateatsea.com/base360-cut-protective-pants

Hockey products below seems to produce pants with cut protection but hockey pants and socks do not need to meet any cut protection standard like in speed skating:

DareDevil seems to provide comprehensive coverage a bit weak in the upper thigh area. No mention of cut resistance level.

https://daredevilhockey.com/

Pretty good coverage. No mention of cut resistance level. Would like the inside upper leg to be more covered.

Alpine racing cut resistant products:

Product below not available yet. It might be warm and you will need to by a sock to cover the lower leg: Also, no mention of cut resistance levels.

http://base360.ca/products/alpine/base360-alpine-pant

Same as above but EN 388 and ANSI Level 4 rated and tested, they look like they might be hot:

Same as above but with Level 2 protection:

Awesome summary Patrick !

One of my concerns  is the lack of information , I don’t find it’s always very clear!

Jack good question I am considering getting the Pro socks for my son. I had purchased the other model about 2 years ago and I found they shrunk after being washed , I will give the pros a try hopefully he’ll wear them this time around.

I've already washed mine. No shrinking whatsoever. Though, like I said previously, they do not stretch the way regular poly socks do; they will fit tighter, and perhaps a bit shorter, than your son might be used to.

Quick update - bought two paris of Cut Shield socks which are currently being introduced to the market to replace my sons tuff and lites.  The Cut shields i am told are level 5 rated and have ordered a set if Daredevil undergarments.

After the injury to the Niagara Ice Dogs goalie last night, I did some searching this morning for a product that would help protect from a cut to the femoral artery. Not much is out there except for these: https://daredevilhockey.com/

I'm not going to wait around for something else to come on the market. I've taken enough collisions similar to what happened to the Ice Dogs goalie. Will try to remember to post a review on here/

I just ordered a pair myself after seeing that OHL goalie get rushed and cut so badly.
