It is a lot different than it was even 15 to 20 years ago as far as not having kids in the programme. Case in point: about the aforementioned time period ago, one of my old teammates wanted me to help him coach his kid’s team. All fine and dandy until I had to go before the local sanctioning body’s board. When I heard that (at that time) you faced some pretty hard questions and essentially very few coaches who didn’t have kids in the programme even got a look in, let alone were allowed to coach, I didn’t even apply to the programme. I had no interest in being grilled, especially when you had 30 parents who suddenly think they should be assistant coach when they weren’t remotely interested before.

Fast forward to twenty years in the future: said buddy is now on the board. He spear-headed the effort to essentially get rid of that unwritten requirement. He is trying to get me to consider being a specialised coach for the forwards or even be a goaltending coach (?!?). If some of my medical issues that are now preventing play can’t be abated, this is well where I may land. It will look weird wearing a Gretzky Jofa and sunglasses.  I don’t even have to travel with the teams and I can be the specialised coach for multiple teams in the house league. Not travelling with the teams suddenly made it highly desirable.

Of course my local sanctioning body will perform a background check, as they SHOULD. And ultimately it is up to the individual coaches on the teams whether or not they want to use me.  But the argument against not having a kid in the programme has essentially been relegated as in many areas, there aren’t enough parents who know hockey or coaching.

As silly as it sounds, you need lifeguards at the Olympics. You hope they are bored out of their minds. One of a multitude of things can happen. G’d forbid if they need to jump in. I knew a triathlete who died training in his swimming pool. He had a widow maker that reared its ugly head whilst he was swimming. Tragic as he had two small kids.  I was about to deliver his new bike frame. It was a lot to take.

I mean, the old team were a great group too off the ice which is what made it a difficult decision. Six Championships and a lot of years (beers) together definitely makes moving on difficult.

However, even my fiancee noted how much I complained about the level of hockey that this team played at.

It was a case of: love the guys, hate the hockey.

I have a resignation letter I use when needed. I just update the date and manager's name. This way my wording is perfect.

Here's the letter:

Quote

__/__/__

Dear ________:

I QUIT!

Signed:

I gave it to my boss where I work now back in 2005. I said I'll just come in and write a date on it one day. Still hanging in his office.

My draft was:

Dear Asshole,

Why did I even bother to write dear?

You suck and don’t even deserve two weeks notice, but I’m a good guy and here they are.

Love,

When we were in high school, we were discussing a fellow female student. Someone mentioned that she had a goofy nose I think.

One buddy, who was real quiet all the time, chimed in "you don't f her nose"

His point was spot on and became a battle cry for years after.

Why is it that grocery stores now jam the tunes? Between the loud refrigeration and the rock concert, I couldn’t even hear myself think, let alone my shopping partner speak. It doesn’t help that she has a terrible habit of not speaking towards me. I always protected my hearing when I was a gigging musician and my hearing is sterling, according to my wife’s hearing aid guy.

I shoulda called this the Anti-thread-derailing Thread: where off-topic non-sense thrives and dies all at the same time.

I'm playing in a little while which is strange for me to play on Friday and it starts at 5:45.  This rink has a giant wall of windows so there will be lots of sunlight, which is also strange.

Pretty excited though.  My buddy sent me a video from Dahan Goaltending and I'm really excited to try little adjustments.  I'm really craving coaching and nitpicky little detail changes in technique, etc.  Looking forward to more goalie coaching opportunities at Krakenland down the street.

I feel attacked.

I recently discovered the Dahan videos as well. Amazing how quickly that's spread around all of a sudden.

Um… what the actual fuck?!? That is a clear violation of the sacred institution of Beer O’clock - and while we all know you can only drink beer on days that end in “y”, Friday is the High Holy Day among the 7 (tied with Saturday and Sunday… and I guess Thursday. And holiday Mondays…)

It pains me to inform you that I must report you to the High Beer Tribunal. I love hockey as much/more than the next guy, but get your priorities straight!

They're really good.  I'm super impressed.

I told my buddy here is the most important takeaway from the one I saw stressing active hands:

Clearly taken in the, erm… “water closet”, all I’m seeing is “how big was that shit? Do you need THIS much bum wipe, or THIS much bum wipe…?”

I think there was a pet thread, but fuck it; I’ll just put this here.
We had our boy go under the knife recently (to prevent his boys making more boys…) so he’s been rocking the cone for a while. Of the four of us at the house, I’m his 4th biggest fan, but had him out and thought this was equal parts sad and hilarious.

ha, indeed.  At first I thought I needed a mirror to illustrate "active goalie hands" but nah, I didn't.

BTW - was it this thread where you posted losses of 8 and 11 goals against…? Thank you for doing that; I’ve had a few blowouts, but thought it was because I’m newish, and I sorta suck. Those probably still hold true in my case, but it made me feel better to know that you and a few others here that I hold in high esteem have also surrendered more than 5.
