2S vs 1S Updates

I figured I'd try a side by side comparison of the 1S and 2S lines.  Lots of obvious and straight forward updates, a few less obvious ones, and a few that don't really do anything, but they're there.  I'll try to keep it to point form notes and expand on the ones I find more interesting.  These are all just design comparisons, I've only used the 2S set once since I got them.  Other than not really needing any break-in time (other than steaming the glove in the store), I won't go into functional differences too much.

Blocker

  • The profile of the inside board looks a little bit different towards the fingers
  • The outer graphic layer of CORTech is a little by smaller on the 2S

20180603_193348.thumb.jpg.a87ed12a6a0b7743469fdb8746ede099.jpg

  • All jenpro (I'm assuming jenpro/similar material in areas where the pucks aren't directly expected to hit) behind the hand, no nylon material.
  • The cuff is segmented a bit differently and is a bit more malleable.  Not that the 1S was stiff by any means.

20180603_193522.thumb.jpg.25ebd6af19602219e00aecbd42f14103.jpg

  • The palm in the 2S is all one colour and feels a bit more substantial in terms of padding
  • The material behind the thumb is now mesh instead of a thin neoprene-like material

Catcher/Trapper

20180603_193701.thumb.jpg.b267d5bcd86a88aa8868b3df2bb28940.jpg

  • The segmenting on the back of the hand and the shape of the back panels has been updated a bit
  • The pocket has had the profile changed a bit to move the deepest part of the pocket to the tip of the glove as opposed to closer to the hand
  • Skate lace through the whole pocket as opposed to nylon lace in the middle of the double T.  Pretty sure I've seen both in the 2S, so not sure if it's just based on whoever is making the glove and how much lace they have or what :P

20180603_193727.thumb.jpg.0988dab8b051242c6e3fc15d8d0dda81.jpg

  • Logo has been flipped
  • It's hard to see in the picture, and may just be due to a year of use on the 1S, but it looks like the palm of the 2S is a bit steeper into the pocket.  That sounds weird, the flip side of that is that the 1S palm almost looks a bit flatter, like there is more surface area on the 2S that directs the puck into the pocket.  Again, may just be break in of the 1S?

20180603_193632.thumb.jpg.6cb2f9de14ae5d456d063b9557229f00.jpg

  • The elastic on the cuff has been moved to give it more space and flexibility.

20180603_193828.thumb.jpg.d4a36c9402d626a402c4e96e4ffdaacd.jpg20180603_193859.thumb.jpg.c44df47139ef21f51193023e1c36f024.jpg

  • The 2S double T is actually attached at the end closest to the hand.  Almost like the opposite of the 1X where the single T splits at the end.  This probably contributes to the change in pocket profile.  Looks like I actually could do something similar with the 1S T, but haven't tried unlacing that part yet.

20180603_193821.thumb.jpg.87ece10bc15d0241915442065cdfe189.jpg

  • Year and month of manufacture patches on all the pieces.  (Note these are made in Thailand, I just pulled all the tags off already)

20180603_193948.thumb.jpg.a6866d80f89e22271eab31b891dd4a8b.jpg

  • Another look at the pocket profile differences.
  • The thumb is segmented differently, no more logo.

20180603_194042.thumb.jpg.88e325f49a448940e13f89fc75727183.jpg

  • Strapping is still the same.  Here I'm showing the only real built-in adjustability in the wrist strap.  There are a couple of holes in the leather on the cuff that you can run the strap through.  This will let you get the strap tighter on your wrist (2S on the left), or keep it from going too tight (1S on the right).

20180603_194113.thumb.jpg.18151b5466f5320ea4b26eb94e87d43a.jpg

  • New palm lock grip material in the 2S

20180603_194213.thumb.jpg.3bff168c72ab6b07a9e607a07356ee2f.jpg

  • Standard nash palm in the 1S

  • Closure and break on the 2S

Pads

20180603_194459.thumb.jpg.368bff83c0ca77dee1dc2ac3a177e37c.jpg

  • Reinforced patch on the inside of the boot, stitched in instead of glued
  • The panel at the bottom of the inside leg channel has been smoothed out, likely due to the rest of the sliding surface being updated

20180603_194658.thumb.jpg.07bbd7fa0d881b36d482621cfec901e2.jpg

  • Outside of the boot with the CORTech ST patch, again stitched to the pad.

20180603_194616.thumb.jpg.f41cd3163eeaa8966ca523f1ada3b924.jpg

  • Toe bridges have no HD foam in them now (2S on the right pictured with ProLaces Armour installed with TGN spec lace-in attachment)

20180603_194740.thumb.jpg.686ca938a908ff0ecc763afb1ec0ec48.jpg

  • This is a custom spec I asked for, but you can kind of see the difference between the stock 1S stiff boot and the 1X soft boot that I requested for my 2S

20180603_194829.thumb.jpg.41002a3e9fe9a8af2ad2032958a3def9.jpg

  • Yes, you can see some of the HD foam of the knee block showing in the 2S.  I think it has to do with the kind-of-1-piece design of the block and flaps, but could pretty easily be covered up.
  • There is more room in the knee of the 2S, they've smoothed out the pillow like effect of the 1S.  This should give you a bit more room for your knee pads if you use a bigger model.
  • PowerLite tag

20180603_194929.thumb.jpg.75a81a480b6a9147483bf22210f31ce2.jpg

  • No tabs for leather straps on the 2S set
  • You can see the difference in the sliding surface.  With the 2S surface extended to be longer, you can see again the part at the bottom that was scaled back.
  • (Not 2S specific) My new strapping technique.  CRS short strap goes from the sling on the inside, through the inner calf wrap wing, down to the bottom-outside velcro.  I like how it keeps the whole pad more evenly snug to my leg without being overly tight in any one area.  I also played with shortening the Logo strap on the 1S by putting some stitches in.

20180603_195203.thumb.jpg.300ddac9347ce5dce0bf2cd104069d35.jpg

  • Month and year patch
  • Loop to tie your toe tie laces through for easier carrying.

20180603_195351.thumb.jpg.45b78e5165d87eb8202a28438ae994fc.jpg

  • Off-set and laced in toe bridge

20180603_195546.thumb.jpg.e416b9cfb8be85c46bfbb30e2cd54c50.jpg

  • No air pillow pad inside the inner calf wrap
  • I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of the actual sliding surface, but I think that's one of the more obvious and widely seen updates.

20180603_195907.thumb.jpg.24aa841dab1b8915328093e5ee9d03b4.jpg

  • Knee blocks at rest

20180603_195931.thumb.jpg.43d75be3cd3bf40b7b236f4a02541920.jpg

  • One finger pushing the 1S

20180603_195935.thumb.jpg.062346b70328d3e7c85f35c9a30d6a42.jpg

  • End of range the other way

20180603_195940.thumb.jpg.feafeafddf1cd04ae6e9a772ecf535d2.jpg

  • One finger pushing the 2S

20180603_195944.thumb.jpg.ca587b10cc42a4cd680b81e12839f8aa.jpg

  • Other end of the range

20180603_200015.thumb.jpg.8895d68a7e9d7adff380fc37483d59b7.jpg

  • Laced into the pad instead of just stitched to the face

20180603_200019.thumb.jpg.00e2babeac8f448bc8b2b57d8e093715.jpg

  • Laced in a bit more snugly than the 1S.  Effectively the block is laced in on both sides, with the knee flap more secure because of it. (Mostly Vapor 1X tech, both because they did it there first, and because I asked for the 1X blocks on my 2S)

Feel free to point out anything else you've scoped out, I'm sure there are other things I've missed, or just didn't notice in the pictures.  Overall I am pretty satisfied with this set.  Anybody want a 1yr old 1S set? :)

Great post!

2S glove definitely feels like it closes differently than the 1S but I can't really describe how. It's technically the same angle but sure doesn't feel like it.

You forgot to mention how much nicer the new logos look over the stickers ;)

It's nice to see some improvements on the Supreme line. How flexible is the 1X boot compared to other brands?

I'll have to defer to the crowd for a comparison to other brands. Even with the fused/soft marketing Bauer uses between Supreme and Vapor, my gut is that the 1X boot is still pretty stiff compared to most brands.

Felt stiffer than the stiff pads from Warrior, Brians and Vaughn.

Not stiffer than a P1 or 1S/2S.

Is the 2s glove standard with skate lace pocket?

Nope, that's one of the options on the customizer.  The stock lace is your standard nylon lace with the coloured lace in the middle section of the double T.

What led you to Bauer over any other company?

I've always preferred Brians or CCM, but I'm open to new ideas.

I've been a Bauer guy for a while so that played a part in it, but I made an effort to demo other stuff before I settled on the 2S just to make sure it wasn't a complete bias on my part.

I demo'd SLRs and a set of Optik FLYs, knowing I'd be looking for a stiffer pad. Those were the most convenient for me to get my hands on and I was interested in the SLR strapping and the new design of the Optiks. Didn't look at Warrior or CCM just because I had used Vaughn and Brian's stuff in the past and felt comfortable choosing from those and Bauer.

Ultimately, it came down to the fact that while they were all very good pads, neither were head and shoulders above the Bauers. In a 3 way tie I'm gonna go with what's familiar, and I knew the 2S line was already addressing the only issues I had with the 1S (sliding surface and knee block).

I can see why some might be turned off by the super different design of the 1S, but the 1X and 2S I think have really dialed the design in to make them not such a scary switch for people who have been in more traditional pads forever.

I'm in the exact same boat, getting a new set soon and its been about 10 years. Rocking Bauer RX10 at the moment. Was hesitant to go Bauer again due to the reviews on the 1s issues. I'm glad I saw this post, it gives me some light to purchase the 2s pads. I'm torn between the CCM P2, Brians Optik Fly and Bauer 2s. I will definitely tries these on at Goalie Monkey.

Do you know anything about the chest protectors? I’m debating if I should buy a 1S chesty now or wait for the ultra sonic to come out and then get the 2S.

I have the 2S, but didn't use the 1S.  Somebody else posted questions about the 2S c/a too, so if you have any specific questions I can roll the answers into it's own post.

Are you getting Ultra Sonic is my burning question...

I mean, like, yes, I'm going to get a set, it is going to be true design, but it's going to be a while before it happens. I'm looking at the fall for when I get back in the ice, so I'll be able to take in the Ultra Sonic release and really put some thought into it.

And yes, I will do another detailed side by side comparison post :P
