I hate the Rangers, least favorite team in the league... but one of the most easily forgettable? C'mon.

They're an Original 6, they play in one of biggest cities in the world, and their goalie's been one of the most recognizable faces of the league since the 2005 lockout.

Currently, yes. They’re irrelevant right now.

Huh?

Again, huh? How is marketing the most profitable NHL team on the big stage (who is currently in a wild card spot) irrelevant?

Because they aren't very good? It's like sending Ottawa and Colorado to Sweden.

NYR is 7th in the east and 14th league wide. That's definitely a far difference then two bottom feeding teams.

If you were saying that only Buffalo was irrelevant, sure, but saying a half decent team (2nd and 15th league wide is only separated by 6 points) that's been good for a long time, in the biggest city, and a huge following as irrelevant is just plain wrong. lol.

Shit, who would you choose then? Toronto? A whopping 3 points ahead of the Rangers with an extra game played? :eyeroll:

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.  Honestly I don't even care that much about the game.  The NHL ruined the novelty of the Winter Classic when they introduced the Stadium Series.

When they first announced the "Winter Classic" I assumed it was gonna be like the Olympics and happen every few years or so, hence the name. Boy did i forget who runs the league.

The problem I have with the outdoor games is that the play surface is so disconnected from the fans. The closest seat is still seemingly miles away from the action. When the Blues had their outdoor game, I watched it in the comfort of my home as I did not want to pay $500 to use binoculars.

Yes this. I don't like watching these games on TV for this very reason.  It's like the game is happening on an island.

I can somewhat corroborate this. I remember flipping through pics of one of the factory tours that was put on a couple years ago.  I forget if it was of the Lefevre factory or of Protechsport.

One of the prominent pieces that was displayed was a mold of Roy’s head with a huge dimple coming out of it, so that no one would be able to make another shell off that mold.

This is the Roy plug from the Lefebrve factory. No reason shells could not be pulled off of this.

Welllll you know they picked these teams last year, right?  And teams are chosen mostly for their TV market appeal (uh, New York, check), their heritage (Original 6, check) and their star power (Lundqvist, check). Teams aren't chosen for the WC based on how well they're doing in the standings right now.

Still, the Rangers are currently in a playoff spot. Do you need to be at the top of your division to be 'relevant'? What about teams that make the playoffs in a low seed and then end up winning (Kings 2012, Nashville last spring)... not relevant? There have been teams that were not even in the playoff picture in past Winter Classics...

Believe me, it's been several years since I watched a Winter Classic. The NHL ran that one into the ground fast with the extra outdoor games, and their unwillingness to feature teams that weren't the Hawks/Pens/Caps/Bruins/Flyers/Wings. But the Rangers are still a huge market draw, and I don't see what's so objectionable about them being chosen for this one. The NHL is far more likely to gain more viewers with the Rangers than lose viewers because of the Rangers.

City Field? Why not Yankee? Islanders at City makes sense. Isles v Rangers at City even more.

Hopefully the goalies and uniforms are all retro themed - because that is still innovative. Maybe players will wear eye black too? A toque hat on a goalie? Oh, the suspense!

Rangers v. Knights at Caesar's Palace. That would have been neat.

Rangers at Golden Showers on plastic ice outside of Caesar’s Palace- THAT would be awesome!

I like the winter classic, but maybe it would be best once every 2nd or 4th year, or at the least the classic alone every year and drop the other ones. Some teams can't participate on account that their location wouldn't allow for good ice surface. Too much of a good thing can be just as bad. Bettman clearly only sees with these $$$$$ all the time.

Why not have an indoor Winter Classic? That's right. I know it kind of defies the title and concept but, it could be played inside which makes the crowd feel closer (and warmer), have both teams wear classic (brown) retro gear (goalies and forwards) and jerseys/socks of course. No modern DJ music, just the good old organ player. Ushers and vendors and the likes could dress in that time period and fans could also join in costume wise. Food and drinks served in fashion of those days. THAT would make for a cool experience!!
