2018-2019 NHL Gear Sitings

Corey Crawford appreciation post. He got run into last night, and he bashed his head on the crossbar pretty badly. Given his recent difficult recovery and his general history, I think it's very possible that this could be the end of the line for him. I hope I'm mistaken. He was a goalie who I wrote as an un-athletic guy who was just riding his teams' coattails early on in his career. I was very mistaken -- if anything, I came to realize how underrated he was, and how critical he was to Chicago's success.

Anyway, as far as gear appreciation goes, Corey had some decent sets over the years, particularly considering some of the boring/unappealing graphics Reebok/CCM has trotted out over the last decade. It was nice to see him gravitate towards black-based gear in recent years.

Revoke...

The only stain for me on the Premier line's history of continually solid graphics.

Oh yeah, I hated the Revoke. Both the Revoke and the Larceny had terrible graphics. But hey, some people loved them...

Cringe worthy line names too, based around taking things away, goaltending trope 101.

That's why you just let Vaughn do their own thing and don't stoop to their tribal level

Rumor is the hawks organization don’t really have concussion spotters. It’s an absolute joke they threw Corey out there back like that after just recovering from vertigo symptoms. As a ducks fan he’s always been the only hawk I can tolerate. I really hope he can take the time off that he needs

I've heard the same. Like they locked him a dark room for a few weeks last year and his agent finally got him hooked up with a specialist in Canada.

Rumor though, unfortunately, I am not that plugged in to get insider details like that

Yeah it’s not like I’m gonna believe it right away but concussions are still a big issue in the nhl so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Nonetheless it’s awful the situation he’s in

Nah, goalie chest protectors and equipment is bigger.

On the real, if they didn't tell a guy "fuck no" to playing when he had a hole in his lung, or whatever Bergeron had that could have easily been death, then concussion spotters will fudge it too.

Hmmm... Not sure I believe this. Concussion spotter? How about a team of doctors? Does that count?

Yes, I am a Blackhawks fan and have been through many dark periods, but I do not believe for a moment that a big market team with no-expense-spared ownership (Rocky Wirtz) and president (John McDonough) simple 'threw Corey out there' after 10 months of recovery. Speculating on what actually happened was all the rage for a while, but the truth was far worse than any of the rumors. I highly doubt he was or will be pushed back to play again any time soon, if at all.

Frankly, I believe Crow should hang 'em up -- Not worth the risk. I have followed his career for 15 years and he has truly grown into a franchise player. With two Cups and the adulation of a generation of Blackhawks fans, I can safely say he'll have his number in the rafters sooner than later. Wife, baby, other interests, and nothing left to prove. I wish him all the best.

I don't believe for a second that the Hawks don't have the usual crew of concussion spotters and team doctors to address head injuries. The NHL is very concerned with [making it look like they are] doing their due diligence in preventing concussions, and every team has to comply with the new regulations that require concussion spotters and other preventive measures. I don't know where that rumor came from, but it sounds like total bunk.

As to whether these people are truly doing their job to the best of their ability, or as to whether or not the coaches and players listen to them... that is another story.  Unfortunately, there's lots of evidence that both players and coaches brush off incidents and ignore troubling signs. I've seen instances where players and their coaches have openly displayed great displeasure at being taken off the ice for a concussion check. There are signs of improvement, and some people/teams are legitimately trying to learn to be responsible. But real concern for head injuries is something that has not fully rooted itself in the way the NHL operates, and most organizations are still not adept at addressing these things in effective ways.

We'll likely never know the true circumstances around Crawford's concussions and subsequent return. It's highly likely that Crawford, the Hawks management, team doctors, and the rest of the staff believed that he was fully recovered and ready to return. I'm sure there was some degree of impatience at play -- everyone is human.  But Crawford was surely concerned about his own health, and I do believe that at the very least, the Hawks wanted to protect an expensive investment and try to ensure that Crawford was healthy enough to return to the net and play well for them. You can fully recover from a concussion, and you'll still be just as at risk for another one. Unfortunately, the worst case scenario unfolded in front of everyone. Whether or not the organization did their due diligence in making sure he was fully recovered from the first concussion, he now has another one, and it looks bad.

Obviously a full recovery and a safe, successful comeback would be the best thing we could all wish for. But I sort of hope Crawford retires. He has two Stanley Cup rings. He has been making top money for a good while. More importantly, he has a wife and child, and I'm sure lots of other friends and family who need him to be happy and healthy for the (many, many) years a player should enjoy when life the the NHL ends. That is the most important thing.

I am happy to share that my info came from someone inside hockey who would know this sort of thing, but again... I have no idea if its fact or not. I only chimed in again to confirm this was a not guy running his mouth after a pick up game with "inside" knowledge of Crawford

@Moose75 not even in terms of equipment, I meant how the nhl has been handling it.

I know, I was being sarcastic as whenever the NHL gets pressed on this issue they distract people with goalie changes or some other diversion to get the heat off.

NHL is lucky it's not as relevant as the other sports because it would be under the same pressure the NFL faces.

@stackem30 @dualshowman again, it’s just a rumor, I never stated it as fact. I still think the way nhl handles concussions isn’t ideal. I apologize for even bringing it up

No need to apologize Southy, I have nothing against you or @TheGoalNet repeating something you heard in this instance — I'm just skeptical of the rumor, personally. And I don't think anyone here would disagree that the way the NHL handles concussions is less than ideal. I might even go out on a limb and say that they're terrible at it ;)
